Hello All,
Well after that great wealth of informaiton that saved me I am again at your
mercy. I bought a new printer, many have told me this is a great low end
printer for the Amiga, and I have seen many great results. I am however
having GREAT problems. Maybe someone can give advice?

It's an Epson Stylus Color 740, the price was absolutely hard to pass up,
but it's not working at all. I am using an
A2500/040/32m/Spectrum/CGFX/StudioIIPro/PageStream4.0r5. Hope that explains
it. Anyway, there was no 740 driver so the book said the next order was
Stylus Pro, now when I try to print all it does is go thrugh a loop just
passing the paper through the printer, no text/pics etc, however a few times
I had gibberish text come out? If this sounds familiar and you know of a
setting I am not using or something please help? I am ready to take it back
perhaps I got a bad printer? Or I think I have it setup wrong. This is the
worst luck I have had with a printer so far. I even tried a few drivers on
Aminet, but they all kludge up and crash the machine too? I sure all the
configging is worth it in the end. Thank you! Smile

Many of the newer printers require the new "IEEE" bi-directional printer
cable. If your new printer is designed to run from a parallel port
(some new ones require USB or other new-fangled interface), maybe
you just need to buy a new cable.

The Epson Stylus Color 740 is a great printer and it produce some very
nice results with TurboPrint7 (in my opinion better than on my sons
PC). I have used it with both the parallel port and with my HyperCOM4+
board without any problems. Unfortunally there is no driver for it in
Pagestream (and Pagestream and TurboPrint is a slooow combination).
Isuggest you try the Epson Stylus Color 800 driver in pagestream -
I remember it worked with a b/w page I printed for a test once. Anyway
I would recommend TurboPrint7 as it support ESC 740 and because it is
the only Amiga printerdriver program still being worked on. In fact
there is an enhanced betadriver for ESC 740 available at IrseeSoft's
homepage (http://www.irseesoft.de).

I'd think the ESC-800 (or the -600) drivers would be a closer match.

Have you tried aminet to see if Wollf Faust has put up any new drivers
recently? If not why don't you contact him. Sorry I cannot give you his
latest email address as am on my PC at this moment. I have always found him
very helpful.

Definitly NO!

1. The Amiga doesn't support IEEE 1284, so the cable doesn't matter. Just
make sure it's a good and short(!) cable.

2. PC Windows drivers often require to communicate with the printer and
thus do need a bitronics printer cable. But this is clearly a driver issue
and doesn't keep you from using the printer with a normal cable on the Amiga.

Regarding the driver:

The Epson printers are pretty different as far as the drivers are
concerned. This mainly has to do with Software-MicroWeave done by the
driver. Software-MicroWeave highly depends on the number of lines printed
per pass by the print head and the 740 has far more lines than any other
printer a driver is available for.

Solution: well, try using the ESC/P2 output module of the Studio printing
program at 720*720dpi. And configure the module to use ESC/P2 Raster(!)
only. This module uses non printer specific ESC/P2 Raster commands wich
most printers work with. But quality will be limited to 720*720dpi and
print speed will be rather low without Software-MicroWeave.
