I thought one of you font wizards might me able to tell me why, in IBrowse,
the apostrophe is replaced by a little box. I tried changing fonts a while
back, but it didn't seem to help. I usually browse the web on a CyberGraphX
800 x 600 256 color screen, can aonyone suggest a font family that will
eliminate the problem?

I see the problem all the time with e-mail (via YAM), where the
originator has used a word-processor (like WORD) to create a
message. The word-processor, using a "smart quotes" type feature,
has replaced all apostrophe's with a right-single-quote character.
The Amiga bitmap fonts used by YAM (Topaz 8 in my case) and other
Amiga programs (like iBrowse) have no right-single-quote character,
and replace it by a little box. You'll see the same thing with some
other kinds of typographic symbols for which there are no Amiga
keyboard access modes.

It would be possible to create a full set of bitmap fonts for iBrowse
with a special extended PC or Mac character set, but the job would be
laborious, to say the least (iBrowse uses 16 different fonts for
displaying HTML). And, worst of all, screen displays then would be
incompatible with other Amiga programs which depend on the standard
Amiga character set.

If you're really bothered by the mysterious characters in incoming
text, try using HHV to read the HTML file in the iBrowse cache. HHV
can use PageStream's CG fonts to interpret the data, and might respond
better to some of those "unknown" codes.

I have seen that HHV thing, and have set it up... I think. But
how do we get it to work with YAM, if it is possible to do so?

Also, can we reply in kind?

(1) To work with the iBrowse cache, use the cachebrowser to find
the desired html file. Save it to RAM: from the cachebrowser window.
Then start HHV (make sure your font prefs are set) and open the
file.

(2) To work with YAM, simply save the desired HTML text to RAM:.
Usually the HTML version of a message is treated by YAM as an
attachment, so it can be saved separately. Then start HHV and
open the HTML file.

I tried (2) just now with a message received having an HTML version
appended. HHV read the message OK, but refused to put any spaces
between words! Yuck. Most iBrowse HTML files it reads OK.

Also I looked to see what codes were being sent when a WIN-type
correspondent used single quotes or apostrophes, which showed up
in YAM as little rectangles. They turned out to be hex 91 (decimal
145) for left single quote and hex 92 (decimal 146) for apostrophe
or right single quote.

The character codes 128-159 are ignored by PageStream 4 Amiga, and by
HHV when it encounters them in a text. So even HHV will never reveal
what characters were intended by codes in that range.

>Also, can we reply in kind?

Do you mean, can we generate weird codes for punctuation and drive
PC or Mac owners nuts? Yes. Many of the codes for special characters
(like fractions, superscript numbers) produce something entirely
different on other platforms. You need to work out with your
correspondents just which symbols are common to your two systems.

Try using a different Amiga screen font which has more characters. I use
XHelvetica in YAM and I never see boxes. If you prefer a non-proportional
font, there is one called XEN which is also fairly complete.

Alternately, edit any font you like in Cloanto's Colorfont program (now
on Aminet), to add the missing apostrophe. There is a wide choice of
non-proportional screen fonts in various small sizes.

Topaz 8 is in the ROM and cannot directly be edited. It may be possible
to save it out under another name.

Actually, those are the fonts I have YAM, IBrowse and Voyager
set to... with the browsers, I have been trying the Voyager
font, but reverted to XEN and XHelvetica.

I bought TypeSMITH ages ago, and could use that if I felt
particularly masochistic, I guess...

I only use Topaz when I have no other choice... as I don't
with my Grade management program, EZ-Grade... it is so old
that it predates OS2.0, IIRC, and becomes really funny looking
and unusable if I do not use Topaz... Sad

Thank you so much for the information.

Thanks, Geoff. I am not sure how this helps me, but I do
appreciate the input.

Now, if I can remember how to set up IBrowse to use YAM
for mail, I will be a much happier camper... I guess I
will go over to the IBrowse ML and ask them...

: ))
