A week or so ago, I wrote about a problem I was having with loading a 3.3
doc into 4r7. I believe it's related to text boxes.

I'm currently recreating that 3.3 doc with 4r7. If I create a text box,
copy it, then try to paste it, as soon as I click the paste button, I get a
Pagestream crash box, error 80000008.

Anyone else have that problem? My configuration is below.

Kind regards,
Billy

That guru message is CPU trap, specifically "damaged semaphore". A
semaphore is used in system programming to prevent two tasks from
accessing the same resource at the same time (e.g., using the same
library).

I could not duplicate your problem with filled or empty text frames,
using an A2K GVP GForce-030/40 MHz, 20 M RAM, 2 M Chip; OS 3.1; standard
graphics. You may have a partially defective 4.0r7 installation: did
the Install operation run to completion (required adding dummy
directories to the source file)?

A possible way to avoid the problem would be to use /Transform/ to copy
the boxes rather than copy-and-paste.

Actually, I was referring to text blocks, not frames. Sorry for my misuse
of terminology. I can copy & paste frames with no problem. And yes, the
install went very smoothly, no problems at all. I'm pretty sure I checked
my install against the files on the CD to make sure they all made it over.

After some more testing, this problem only seems to occur on the master
page. I could not get it to do it on the body page, or whatever the
non-master page is called. And now it's just bringing up the wait pointer
and freezing the whole machine, I don't even get a dialog box with the
error number.

I'll do some more testing as soon as I have the time to try, crash, &
reboot.

Regards,
Billy

Evidently you are working with "frameless text objects" -- that has
been the semi-official nomenclature.

There are two ways to cut or copy and paste these:

(1) Select with the object tool. Cut or copy, then paste. The new
text object will turn up at some random point on the page -- not at
the center of the page as happens with graphics. Move to the desired
new location.

(2) Select the text object by highlighting it. Cut or copy. Before
pasting, move the text pointer to the desired insertion point, then
paste.

If you leave the original text highlighted during the paste operation,
you get no copy and a half-highlighted original which you can't work
with (Re-highlight it and delete it. Now you can paste copies wherever
you want them).

The above procedures work with the 68030 and OS 3.1. There have been
some early problems with the 060, but things have been very quiet on
that front for a couple of years now.

I did some more testing with my problem, and it does not happen on new docs,
only the doc I tried importing from 3.3.

At first the 3.3 doc would not load in 4r7 without crashing the machine. I
deleted all the text blocks from the doc in 3.3, then it would load in 4r7.
After loading in 4r7 I started remaking the text blocks so it would look
like the original 3.3 doc.

The text blocks I need most are rotated 90°, therefore a text frame won't
work (will it?). The crashes only occur on the master page, which is
mostly a lot of lines and boxes. It's a report form I use all the time at
work and originated as a PgS 2.2 doc and also worked fine in 3.3.

It seems as though this problem is unique to this doc; I've sent it to Deron
for him to take a look at.

Thanks, Geoffrey, for taking time to try to help.

Regards,
Billy
