Hey folks,

One question and a few comments on current threads:

I'm currently using PGS4.0r5 and was wondering if anybody know if the HTML
export has improved from r5 to r7. More specifically, I mean the problem
that things like non-breaking spaces would be exported as '<&nbsp>' instead
of ' '. Has this been fixed?

On the Word and RTF side:

I also import RTF stuff into PGS without problems. Obviously, text only. I
think PGS does a pretty good job at getting the formatting and fonts etc.
right.

I found a great cool way to read in Word stuff (no graphics yet though ...).
Simply download the demo version of AmigaWriter 2 from the H&P site, load up
your Word doc in AmigaWriter, and get it into PGS via the Clipboard. That's
for free, but I ordered the full version of AmigaWriter rightaway when I saw
the Word import feature. I completely intend to start bugging H&P about also
importing graphics. If we all do that, who knows ...

About importing graphics: All these formats like Word docs, RTF docs, even
PGS docs, probably do not try to compress image data any further, right? So
how hard can it be to write a program that scans through a file (Word, RTF,
PGS, any type) and 'extracts' all images from it? GIF, JPG, IFF, most images
have very specific headers that can easily be found.

And on a final note: I read somewhere in the last 40 messages that someone
was sorry PowerPoint was only available for PC and Mac. Half true: SUN
Microsystems has recently thrown some more pie in Bill's face and gives away
StarOffice 5 for free for Solaris SPARC, Solaris Intel, Linux, OS/2 and yes,
Microsoft's attempt at an OS as well. I think they're also planning a Mac
release sometime this year. StarOffice is practically the same as the MS
Office stuff (transparent import/export of MS Office files) and is free and
available for quite a few platforms. It's stable and you can run it on a
real OS.

Well, I said that... and it is only partly true... IIRC, there
were a number of programs designed for the Amiga that did
basically the same thing... The Director was an early one,
then I think AmigaVision or some such name, and others. This
idea started, I guess, with the Amiga, BUT PowerPoint and
others like it, have added more modern stuff... but basically
the same thing.

PP is a great program. There were about 50 people, half were
newbies to a computer, and everyone managed to create something
cool within the 90 minutes they worked with it. There was
sure a lot of "Oooo-ing" and "Ahhhh-ing", let me tell you.

If I had the time, I would love to just sit and create lessons
with that danged thing... one could make some neat, interesting
things with that! ...a lot more easily than I remember the
old Amiga programs doing, and those were not really too
difficult. The number of templates and neat features that
have been added, makes it very powerful. You have to see it to
appreciate it! (I think...)

You mean,... you mean.... it is actually available for an.....
...Amiga!!!???

: ))))

(Well, you said it was available for a "real" OS... ; )

I get the impression you haven't used Scala MM400 on the Amiga? It has a
very good interface, and is very comprehensive.

Director, although nice in a way, was a programming language rather than
an authoring tool.

There is also a PC version of Scala, but I haven't tried it.

What is the "modern stuff" you mention?

Don't forget TVText and Scala. Both are good for presenting data, but Scala
is more PP-like than TVText. But remember, you don't have to have a VGA
projector to display your Amiga presentations.

People tend to overuse all those transitions to the point where the
presentation is lost and the transitions are the main show. But most
people like fooling with the transitions. When I first got my Toaster back
in '92, I oohed and aahed over the transitions, but now, with about 500
transitions, I only use maybe about 30 or so, but seldom more than about 4
in the same video.

I'm told that US gov't employees use the term "PowerPoint Ranger" for
someone who spends his time making glitzy presentations, usually
with little content. Of course, this isn't PP's fault...
