As stated before, RTF is for text, graphics and also some other types of objects. If you checkhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp, and click on 'Specifications' in the left frame, you'll be able to view the RTF 1.6 definition.
RTF 1.6 supports TrueType fonts, code pages, viewing zoom levels, and all the other usual text formatting things (headers/footers, sections, footnotes, tables, colours, borders, shading, the works). Several types of bitmap images and even some vector oriented image types are supported. At the end of the document some C source code for a very simple version of an RTF reader is included.
