Worked on a document for three hours tonight. A lot of high resolution images, but these were all external images, with only preview images in the actual document. (It's a children's book so mostly full page pictures). Even with this the document is about 400MB in size.

I was done the work and wanted to go to bed near midnight. I saved and closed PageStream. But I like to open the document again after this to make sure it has saved and opens properly.

The document would not open. Would load partially and then crashed PageStream 5.0.5.8Pro on Windows XP.

So I started my older version of PageStream 5.0.2.10Pro. This time the document would load but it suddenly rejected (couldn't find?) some of the fonts I had been using and asked for alternatives.

After it loaded successfully in the older version, I re-saved it with a new name and tried to load it back into the latest version. It again crashed PageStream upon loading.

Not sure what the problem was, I ran CCleaner and cleaned out all temporary files and searched for registry problems. It found a few and I cleaned everything.

Now any version PageStream will start, but I cannot open a blank document at all. If I do, the document is off the screen and to the lower right. If I move the window scroll bars to bring the document into view, the program immediately crashes. This means I cannot use PageStream at all.

A telling symptom is that whenever I start PageStream now (any version). I no longer get the splash screen with the graphic of the man or stick figure, however, when I choose "ABOUT" in PageStream, I can see it's still properly registered to me. I am able to set preferences, select the ABOUT dialogue, anything except try to start a document and display it on screen (even a blank document).

So.....how can I completely clean PageStream out of my system in order to re-install it? I mean a complete cleaning?

This is very frustrating - and the first major problem I've had with PageStream after using it for over ten years.

Okay, I have found out that the older 5.0.2.10Pro will start and load the document. For some reason there was a font problem and now it wants new fonts.

But the newer 5.0.2.10Pro still has the big problem of starting, but once you start a "blank" document, the actual page of the document is off the screen down and right, and once you try to recenter it on the page with the slider bars the program crashes.

I've already tried re-installing (overwriting) the directory with the original files from teh 5.0.2.10Pro Zip archive, but it doesn't cure the problem

Okay, have discovered that PS 5.0.5.8Pro not only starts NEW documents down and off screen to the right, but when loading ANY document into PageStream, it starts down and off screen to the right. When you try and centre it on screen with the slider bars....CRASH!

You cannot use any of the macros in the number row, or the zoom in / zoom out to view the document (these do nothing).

You can use all menus, etc. --- it's only when you try to centre the document that you get the crash.

Back up your data.. I'm more worried about it being failing hard drive then a problem with pagestream. Try a new install of pagestream rathern than just writing over the old files.
but make sure you back up your data first. How old is this system?

How do I do a complete, true removal of PageStream 5.0.5.8_Pro?

When I delete the PageStream directory from CRazzrogram Files/PageStream/ and reinstall fresh from the PageStream .zip archive and start the new installation, it still remembers all my preferences and registration from the install I just removed. So obviously I'm missing something in my "uninstall" process!

Don't worry! Really!

Somehow when saving your document something went wrong, it didn't
completely wrote you're PageStream5.ini.
So it doesn't know where your document view should be (I am sure about
this), and where it can find the used fonts (not that sure about this).

For things only Deron might or should know the answer, the document view
is at the out-most right en below of the PGS-window. And PGS crashes
when you do something, when you found it.

Rename the PageStream5.ini to something like PageStream5old.ini. (You
can find PageStream5.ini with
http://www.pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=82)
Just start PGS again. PGS acts as if it is a first install, just continue.
PGS is now a good working version again. You might copy parts of the
PageStream5old.ini to the the freshly PageStream5.ini (it is just a text
file).

PageStream5.ini is always updated when you close PGS! So when something
is going bad at that time, PGS could go astray when you open PGS again.
This has nothing (99.9 %) to do with your harddisk.

As I wrote in the other mail: not necessary (to do an or any uninstall).

BTW, you don't have to place PGS in the C:\\Program Files. It can be
anywhere on your harddisks.

Thanks Theo,

You were right. It was my PageStream5.ini file that got corrupted.

Everything works now (knock on wood)!

Thank you so much for your help - I really mean it. I can finally sleep after some hours of frustration.

It's 3AM in the morning here and I have to work in the morning so I REALLY appreciate how helpful all you guys are.

Thanks for being a great PageStream community.

-Brent
