Hi,

So my children's book is finished, but now I need to submit it to Lulu.com for vanity press printing and binding.

I laid it out with 9x7 inch pages because that's one of the few formats LuLu specifies for the type of binding I need.

Lulu wants you to upload documents in pdf format. Okay.

But Lulu.com says all pages must have a 1/4 inch bleed around the edge. So I need to generate a PDF like this. Final page size would be 9.25 x 7.25 inches.

I could change the master page size in my document to this, but then I'll have to re-centre all the text and graphics on each page to this new master page size (since PageStream will add the extra quarter inch to the right and bottom margins of the page). There are sixty pages in the document so I would like to avoid this if possible.

Is there any way to take my already laid out 9x7 inch document, and without modifying it, automatically generate a PDF that has the extra quarter inch of bleed space around it? The backgrounds of all pages are white adding a white bleed space would not cause trouble.

I know there are ways to add printers marks, etc. to a document when you finally render it, so I'm wondering if "add bleed" is an option as well.

Thanks,
- Brent

I don't believe there is. You could try printing to postscript file (with bleeds and the larger page size) and convert that to PDF, but honestly I think the simplest solution would be to change the master page size and use a script to go through the pages.

I haven't done any PgS scripting recently so I may be missing something, but use the script menu to start recording a macro (while on the first page), select all, group, align to center, ungroup, unselect (click somewhere), click next page, then stop recording, save the macro then run it consecutively by selecting it in the script palette and click the run gadget as many times as needed.

That would work if all contents selected on each page are actually centered on the page -- which may or may not be the case. It could be made to work by using scripting to computer the correct upper left corner coordinate and setting it to that for each page. Scripting would also allow click-once-to-fix-all-pages. Alas, as noted, I haven't done this recently and it is too late to write it up at the moment.

Sorry Brent,

I have no idea.
Maybe Deron can implement this in a future version.
