Hi,

I was reading on this list how I could make a book of my installed fonts by playing a downloadable script FontSpec.

This script is installed in my Scripts drawer, but how do I get it to execute? In my Scripts menu the option to "PLAY EXTERNAL SCRIPTS" is always greyed out!

I'm using Windows 5.0.5.8 under XP-SP3.

Thanks,
Brent

If it is greyed out (ghosted) that means PgS did not find a Python installation when it was started. You can resolve this by going to python.org, downloading python 2.7 and installing it (just take any defaults). Make sure to download a version of Python 2, not Python 3 -- they are not completely compatible.

After Python is installed when you start PgS it will detect it and enable the external scripts menu.

I don't know if you found and install a Python version.

You can find it here:http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.3/
Click
on an appropriate Country and Type HTTP (or FTP if you like).
If all is going well, you have python-2.7.3.msi, and save it.
When found in the download folder, double click on it and execute it.
Click on install for all users. If you have already a Python version
working it warns you that it replace the existing Python27 installation.
If it is a new install it will be done in: C:\Python27\
I don't customize Python in the next question. The installing starts,
after you granted that Windows may do that.

If it is installed, all the external Scripts in PageStream should be
reachable (not grayed, or greyed for you British, out).

Does this work for you too? Should be!

I was curious and tried to install Python and had the same issues as
Brent. Win 7 64 bit and Pagestream 5.0.5.8 Pro. Installed the 64 bit
version of Python and I could not get Pagestream to see it, even though
Python installed correctly and would run on its own. I uninstalled the
64 bit version and installed the 32 bit version and it works as it
should now. This version is listed as:

* Windows x86 MSI Installer (2.7.3)
<http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.3/python-2.7.3.msi> (sig)
<http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.3/python-2.7.3.msi.asc>
*

<http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.3/python-2.7.3.msi.asc>

Hope this helps you out.

I tried what peter (below) suggested and used 32 bit. It allowed me to
see play external scripts, I clicked it and got to print fonts. Clicked
on that and back to PS5. A windo came up asking meone or 6 fonts to a
page. I clicked on forward and it started then stalled "not responding"
so near and yet so far. Going back to 64 bit and still gray.
Any good suggestions ??

Ah, yeah, I didn't think about that. You *must* have the version of Python to match PgS. Whether on linux or Windows. There at least was a 64-bit linux beta a while back to assuage some of the pain of getting 32-bit python working for it on a 64-bit system. Technically is an issue on OS X, but the provided-by-Apple Python must be compiled as 32-bit…
