Hello,

I haven't been doing any serious PS work for the past couple of years but I have enjoyed seeing your posts from time to time. I just downloaded 5.0.5.8 and was wondering what was going on in the PS world.

Well, there's been some good fixes put into 5.0.5.9, though that is currently only available for OS X. I'm not sure there's a timeline for getting that version compiled for other platforms and most of the fixes are probably OS X related. I remember seeing some cross platform or Windows related mentions in the read me, but don't recall what at the moment.

Well, why didn't anyone tell me there is a 5.0.5.9? Already almost two
week old!

I like to see the fixes (and wait desperately for the Windows version). Smile

It maybe out there but, at least on my iMac and MacBook, it fizzles.

Don't know why, some deep and secret flaw somewhere.

Sure would be nice to have Pagestream catch up to the Mac OS. But that won't happen until Mac stops breaking things once a year with their OS updates.

Pagestream is still for the most part the most intuitive and powerful DTP put there, it comes close to a drawing program with text assets.

can you be more precise about "fizzles"? I have an iMac running 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and it works just fine. If you can give details we may be able to help you.

Hi Tim,

Do you use the latest PGS version on Mac OS X 10.8.2? On my system it
doesn't start and Deron doesn't know why as the debug report doesn't
tell enough.

Hi Tim,

I have to open the new version of 5.0.5.9 with a right click initially, (because it is from an unidentified developer) then the icon bounces once in the Dock and disappears.
Wish I could tell you more but that's all that happens. 5.0.5.8 is working fine however, except for the bugs.

It is not only Apple that breaks things with updates, that is also a
technique well experienced with Micro$oft. I have a couple of theories
about this phenomenon.

As a person who does programming I know that keeping aspects of the OS
that allow older versions of programs to run on the "improved" OS is a
moderately difficult task. Especially when some security improvement is
one of the things that breaks older applications. This is the non-paranoid
theory.

On the other hand if your company also makes money selling applications,
then when you update the OS and make older applications obsolete you
create a need for users to buy upgrades and you may also exclude
competitors applications from running on your system - pushing the sales
to your own programs. This is the more malevolent theory.

One way around this if systems can also run virtual machines is to set up
the OS that works with your program as a virtual machine and then run
the program within the virtual machine.

Of course you can always install Linux to dual boot on your Mac and then
run Pagestream linux (this is the Linux user's theory). (grin here)

Hi Barry,

I tracked down the problem to one dynlib included in 5.0.5.9. After
exchanging it with the 5.0.5.8 version PGS works.

Deron is informed and will investigate the problem. I doubt it's an OS
issue.

When security is switched on there is an OS warning which does not
appear with PGS.
