Strange, all these DTP types fretting about screen display quality.

That may be true for people who are in business designing CRT displays
(web pages, video animations &c), but considering the number of
/print/ related problems yet to be resolved in PageStream, it seems to
me that the present on-screen rendition of TrueType and other font
formats is entirely adequate. /Print/ quality is our target here --
isn't it?

Sorry, I use a PostScript printer. I was forgetting that other people
are having problems.

But how can you do good typography if you can't see what it looks like
on screen?

Then Imposition/Signature via PostScript is working for you?

Easy. Run proofs! I don't have a 300 dpi screen display, so a printed
proof is necessary for me to see what's "really" going on...

Postscript has its own problems if you're using TrueType fonts. Or has
that been fixed? (I really need to install r5, before it becomes r6...)

Well, the dirty secret of DTP is that you kill about six trees for every
finished page. ;) Seriously, though, even in Windows and Mac programs
you still have to zoom in 200% or more for true WYSIWYG (or as close as
it ever really gets). Zoom in far enough and you can see what PGS is going
to do.

The very same features in Windows and MacOS that give you prettier fonts
at low res invariably distort the display, because you make compromises
between accuracy and onscreen legibility. PGS is biased toward accuracy.

I'm running Win98 at 1024x768 (on an unusually sharp 15" monitor) with
TrueType smoothing. Looks real nice, but I don't know how many times I've
had to reprint something from Word because it didn't come out on paper the
way I expected, even to the point of lines breaking differently. I would
hope that Quark and PageMaker are more accurate -- but that means they
aren't as nice to look at.

Someday when we're all using 300dpi "electronic ink" displays instead
of CRTs or LCDs, you won't need display tricks like hinting, smoothing
or sub-pixel antialiasing to improve legibility. Then the fonts in PGS
will look just fine.

I can't get the TrueType fonts to work in Pagestream 4. They worked in 3.4! I
have the TrueType 1.2 release. Should I have something newer? On another note,
the magnifying glass works in reverse! With the + in it everything gets
smaller, very fast. With the - in it everything gets bigger. Just the opposite
of all previous versions. ERROR???

which revision of v4 are you using? I haven't noticed the magnifying glass
problem and just checked with r5 here and it works as expected. As for
TrueType -- those work here for me as well. I didn't actually install any
before r4 so I won't swear to previous versions, but it may very well be
because you have the TrueType from v3.4. V4 works *without* the addon
plugins for TrueType and JPG. Adding them may cause problems.

I'm using r5! I set it all up, and no TrueType fonts showed up. So I dug up my
TrueType add-on from the past, and installed it. Still no TrueType fonts
showing up...
The first time I put the magnifying glass on a certain point and clicked it,
the page zoomed down to a tiny full
page on the screen. I hit shift and tried again and it went to a screen filing
view again. Works backwards here...

The correct version of TTF.font for use with PageStream 4.0r5 for the
Amiga is version 1.3, which was distributed with the CD-ROM version
of r5.

It sometimes takes a couple of /Update/ operations under System
Preferences/Fonts when a new program is installed, to get the font
list squared away.
