Hi...thanks for all the answers to my PageStream transparency/pattern
fill questions.

Another question (Again, I use PageStream 3.1, Amiga version):

Yesterday I was experimenting with filling structured objects using
the gradient tool. I.e. a gradient from Blue to Green. Or Red to
White or whatever.

I noticed that the gradients were not "smooth"....I could see
banding...the colours did not blend into each other....rather, the
transition from start colour to target colour took place in about
eight seperate bands of gradually shifting colour.

i.e. a transition from red to white would be in bands of:

Red, light-red, lighter-red, pink, light-pink, pinkish-white, white.

I should note that I was using a 16-bit Picasso II+ screen at
800x600, so I thought the transition would be smooth.

Do I need to change some setting, or define more colours?

The screen display is optimized for speed. Printing will break the "bands"
down as small as available colors allow.

I don't believe there are any controls you can use to change this.

This problem is still present in version 4.0 r8, in video and in printing.

If I revert to an 8-bit screen, it's very evident.

With a 24-bit screen, you don't see the banding. With a 720x720
dpi printer, it's barely noticeable. I imagine with a higher
resolution printer it wouldn't be perceptible, but I don't have
one to try it on.

Generally I use a 16 bit screen (low memory on graphic board) but I have set
other screen modes too.
I have set the screen to 720x500 24 bit and the banding is very evident
I have set the screen to 720x500 _32_ bit and the banding is very evident

My printer is an HP890C and prints 600x600 DPI. Normally I use preference
printer whith TurboPrint driver.

The gradient was made from blue 100% to white 100%

My graphics board is a Pixel64 with Picasso96.

You are very lucky.
Do you use the PageStream drivers for your printer (I suppose that is
Epson)?

I use Wolf Faust's Studio II printer drivers--Canon BJC-620
printer in Epson mode.

I have a Sony Trinitron Multiscan17seII monitor on a PicassoIV
graphics card with P96 software.
