Hi,

I have downloaded the 5.0.2.8 pagestream. I put it in a directory named Pagestream under WP on my OS4 (root) partition. I set an assign for Pagestream to this directory (which seems necessary to keep an orange requester about missing fonts from opening up) and start pagestream from an icon by copying the pagestream 4 icon to this dorectory and renamng it pagestream 5. The icon has a stack of 300000.
I get the initial registration page. all goes well. I register. It loads the libraries. This load requester closes and I get the small 30 x 100 or so pixel window at the top left of my workbench. This window is active. My mouse pointer locks up shortly thereafter.

Has anyone gotten past this yet?

Thnaks,

Scott

No, well I haven't!

I recently sent a SnoopDos log to Deron and hope that it may be of
some help.

Ciao, Trev Daley.

Some have gone well beyond that, others wish they had gotten as far as you.
If you can perhaps send any debugger output (hits captured by the OS4 grim
reaper, and/or OS4 snoopdos output) I can take a look. A new version is
uploading right now, so it might already be fixed Smile

Good news on the uploading.

I've NEVER had a Grim Reaper or an Orange warning box with the new
PgS. Everything just locks up and needs a soft reset. I suupose I
should be diligent and install Snoop DOS. I'm one of those end-user
types who just uses the computer, rather than analyzing it. ;-(

Scott,

Yes. But I'm not one of them. I get the same behavior you do. I'm
wondering if it's more MUI related than PgS? Deron?

OS4 pre3 here, 512 MB.

So why are you testing a beta version of PGS?

[PageStreamAmigaBeta] Any solution for the Pagestream OS4 5.0.2.8
lockup?

Hello Scott,

Note: I'm running with Update #3 for OS4.0.

I have deliberately not set an assignment for 'PageStream:' since I
want to use the one that will take me to the 'old' 4.1.5.6 Amgia
version and which is set in 'S:User-Startup'. When the yellow guru
style message appears and complains, I just left-click it away.
Also, in this manner I can have both PageStream4 and PageStream5
running at the same time.

s> and start pagestream from an icon by copying the
s> pagestream 4 icon to this dorectory and renamng it pagestream 5.

I left things as they were; i.e., click on the 'PageStream5Pro' icon
when I want to engage 5.0.2.8Pro.

s> The icon has a stack of 300000.

The stack size is 250000 here, and I cannot recall whether I fiddled
with that or whether 250000 is the default.

s> I get the initial registration page. all goes well. I register.

Yes, the registration process went well.

s> It loads the libraries. This load requester closes and I get the
s> small 30 x 100 or so pixel window at the top left of my

s> Has anyone gotten past this yet?

Yes! However .....

PageStream 5.0.2.8 opens on the Workbench screen, hence I get rid of
all other 'stuff' -- iconify if necessary -- but leave the AmiDock
on. I've tried to change the 'Screen' setting so that PageStream
would have its own "New public" screen, but I was never able to get
to

File/System Preferences/Screen...

so far! Wink I.E., selecting the above brings no reply, hence I seem
to be stuck to the Workbench screen.

Initially, there is a horizontal toolbar (or is it toolbox) and a
vertical toolbar but the vertical guy overlaps the horizontal one,
hence the depth gadget on the vertical one has to be used to reveal
the full extent of one or the other. I cannot move either of these
toolbars, or, I've not found the secret to do so. Wink On occasion,
I've accidentally clicked on the CLOSE gadget on the vertical tool
bar and thereafter have not found out how to recover it.

If the mouse hovers over an icon on the HTB (Horizontal Tool Bar) or
the VTB (Vertical Tool Bar) then a popup appears and declares
(briefly) the function of the icon. This is VERY NICE. I LIKE IT!
Smile However, this behaviour is NOT consistent. On opening
PageStream5, sometimes it works and more ofter, it does not. By the
way, as I continue to use PageStream its 'fitness' seems to
deteriorate; e.g., after a while the popups seem to go away, and
other nasties cane appear: like the tool bars turning blank; i.e.,
their icons disappear.

The HTB:
Consists of 19 icons at present whose function, as declared by the
popups, is (from left to right):

Icon's Does it work?
Popup
Message
New Yes, but takes 5 seconds for the "New document" window to
open
Open Not sure! The example doc '5.0Flyer.pgs' did not open
properly and soon led to a freeze-up. More about
this below. DANGEROUS!
Save Yes. So far only 'junk' docs have been saved, then
opened.
Print Haven't dared. Currrently mucked up with USB line to
printer not working.
Cut
Copy
Paste
Clear
Undo
Redo
Link Text Frames
Unlink Text Frames
Decrease Indent
Increase Indent
Hanging Indent
Play External Script
Preferences
Line & Fill
Information

The reason I cannot say anything about Cut Copy Paste
Clear is that I cannot enter 'visible' text at this point. If I
choose "New document" then create a text box, on selecting the text
tool and typing into the text box NOTHING appears. However, the
'Information' guy tells me that the word count is '3' (say). So I
return and enter some more invisible text and then the
'Information' guy says my word count is up to '9' (say). So the
text colour and background colour must be the same. Hmmmmmm!!!

The VTB:
From top to bottom there are 12 icons, and, according to the popups,
each is a 'tool' hence this is probably the 'toolbar' but I'll
continue to refer to it as the VTB. The functions are (leaving out
the word 'tool')

Icon's Does it work?
Popup
Message
Object Yes
Text No, Yes, Maybe!?!?!? See discussion.
Magnify Don't know
Eyedropper Don't know
Single text column Yes
Line Yes
Rectangle Yes
Ellipse Yes. Hold down SHIFT key and you get circles.
Polygon Yes. Five-sided by default.
Pen Yes
Table Don't know. Never used tables.
??? Popup would not give function. Icon looks
like a carpenter's T-square.

Some of the icons on HTB work, e.g., 'New' but there is a delay
before the appropriate "New document" window opens -- about 5
seconds. Generally, the response to clicking an icon is much slower
than in PageStream 4.1.5.6.

This "New document" window, and others, is initially 'squashed' so
'widen' it a bit to see the relevant data, then select USE and up
pops the usual starting page. This page has horizontal & vertical
rulers, the grid is turned on, and I was able to turn it off. But I
was not able to insert text ..... well, not visible text. Smile)

Tried to OPEN the example document '5.0Flyer.pgs' but that failed
although a window opened and declared it was the '5.0Flyer.pgs'
doc, but there was no text and no graphics. Same thing with the
"Welcome to 5.0.pgs" doc.

DAMNATION!

It is becoming clear that OPEN is the most 'dangerous' operation
I've tried so far. On opening the "Welcome to 5.0.pgs" doc the
"Font substitution" window opens, but it is blank -- same for the
'5.0Flyer.pgs' doc -- and a click on DONE (something like that)
froze the whole
damn system, and much of this message had to be retyped. So be
careful with OPEN.

However, as I continue to work with PageStream, things get worse as
time elapses. Sooner or later the toolbars go gray -- all icons
formerly on them disappear -- and soon nothing can be done. The
mouse cursor can be moved around, but has no effect on PageStream
things. Eventually, I have to do a soft reboot as the PageStream
will not QUIT.

But she's getting better bye ..... sort of! Smile Going to HOT DAMN
GOOD in no time flat. Smile0

Me too Smile
PageStream reacts exactly the same way here.

Smile pagestream now uses MUI. to change the screen a mui program runs
you have to set it inside mui - just like any other mui program
(ibrowse, yam, ...)

byebye...

Don,

Same reason I'm using OS4 pre3 (a beta, yes?):

I do as much as I can to promote a good future things I like.

Just because I can't program and don't have the time to be a real beta
tester, doesn't mean I can't report what I observe in the hopes of
helping Deron, Hyperion, or fellow OS4 users.

Besides, it's fun! (and I still have my 68k PgS working just dandy on
the A1)
