Hi,

first of all, thanks, Deron, for your work. Unfortunately, the new Pagestream for OS4 still doesn't work here.
Strange enough, after installing it I could open a new document and type some text in it, but today it crashes when opening a new document. Here my crashlog:

http://lrs.club.fr/CrashlogRicossa.txt

When I was able to create a new document, it was also impossible to create a new page.

Hope it helps

Doesn't work at all, or has problems?

Where you scrolling horizontally when it crashed? That seems to be where it
crashed.

You can only change pages using a script, the buttons in the window bar
edge are missing right now.

Which for the record probably means an uninitialized pointer. Hits on the
first 64 kB of memory under OS4 are not allowed at all (will throw a GR
every time) and were already problematic under OS3, you just didn't notice
if you didn't run proper debug tools. Unfornately, I don't think Deron ever
used the likes of MuForce there.

Hi!

Checking out the recent posts made me a bit angry to not be
able to get PGS5 running on my A1.
Deron can run it, Michael Merkel can run it... but I cannot.

Today I went to an A1 meeting and I tried PGS5 on a beta
tester's machine. It is starting, running without critical
problems. There is no alert for the softlogik font glyph
#126. There is no grim reaper.

The questions are:

-Does Deron using beta version of OS4?

-Everybody has got beta OS4, who can run PGS5?

-Everybody has got update#3 OS4, who cannot run PGS5?

Please help me to clear this mist.

Lazar,

It sounds like you get even farther than I do, Lazar. I don't get any
"window," and no menu bar at the top. I get a toolbar, and one other
window minimized to the point that only the top right gadgets show.
That's it. AFter I click on either of these two items once or twice,
the machine freezes. No Grims. No messages. Just freezes. I thought
maybe it was a problem with some MUI custom class ro such. But there
was no reply to that question early this week.

Most likely it is "just" (as if it is easily fixed, it would have been by
now), a random memory trashing at startup. Some folks are directly stopped
by it, others are not.

I have an AmigaOne XE with 1 GB of memory - and passed the memory
test - with update 3 installed. PageStream4 runs fine but PageStream5
freezes my system right after it starts displaying toolbars. No Grim
Reaper or any warning. Just a total freeze from which I can warm boot.

The latest PGS, on my A1G4 now starts up, I can open a new
document and type some text, but it is still unusable: no
way to change the page, no way to import a graphic, only
bitstream fonts work, it crashes sooner or later, I can't
open an old document, etc... But it is better than before,
when it wouldn't even start !

so... you are not alone. Sad

Me too, 5.0.2.9 is the first version I have been able to completely
startup.

It will load the welcome document although it opens an empty "font
substitute" window, all I do is click OK and it goes away and the
document is loaded.

To be honest I have been too busy to do much else, so I don't know how
much further I can go.

A great improvement, none-the-less.

Keep up the great work.

Ciao, Trev Daley.

i only have prerelease upd#3 - no beta!

i'd suggest you to try the following:
- try booting from a clean prerelease cd and start pagestream then.
this *should* work
(of course i mean a boot cd including update 3)
- try disabling your wbstartup and everything from user-startup. then
reboot and try pagestream from there

i'm quite sure that one of those tries should result in starting
pagestream. then you can go step by step from there to see what
actually is the problem on your machine.

I have only an update#1 bootdisk. The other two are arrived
in a form of packed installer.

However booting up from the #1 cd, the new pgs started as I
seen on the mentioned machine. So I will start from
scratch with an empty hdd, and will be know what is the
problem.

Thanks Michael, you were so helpful!

maybe you should create an update3 bootable disk by yourself. i did so
using a clean harddisk, installing everything from scratch including
upd1 and 3. then i copied the contents of my old cd (very first
prerelease) into a drawer and then the new files (incl. upd3). with
that drawer you can create a new boot disk.

The other included fonts have a problem. Just don't add them via the font
prefs and your older document problems will probably go away.

but soon after that pagestream freazed.

I just tryed the lesson.ilus included in the distribution:
loaded, but then I couldn't do anything else with PGS.

No "crash", the system works still, but PGS simply doesn't
answer anymore.

Hello!

As I mentioned in my recent post, my machine was not be able
to start any of the PPC Pagestreams. After I was tried on another
machine succesfully, I had spent one whole day to figure
out the problem.

So am I find it?
Sadly I have to say: I don't know!

I was installed OS4 form scratch to a new partition. After
the installation, PGS started as it should do.
Then I overwrote the system drawers from my main system
partition one-by-one, and checked every attempt.

I have found that env-archive: (the prefs) contained something that
blocked PGS. The last file copy before PGS refused to start
on the nem installed OS4 was
Prefs/env-archive/sys/locale.prefs.

When I was moved back to the initial system partition. PGS
still refused to start. After I changed locale prefs via the
prefs utility, the PGS starting problem is vanished.

From that time I cannot reproduce the problem, so I do not
sure what was the real bug.

So if you cannot start the ppc PGS on OS4 please change
locale prefs and let me know what happens.

Hi!

After OS4 system start I have to (re)save unchanged the locale
preferences to be able to start PageStream.

I can now reproduce the problem.
No saving prefs - no pgs.

I don't know what is the context between pgs and locale
prefs.
Any idea?

Does PGS looking for locale settings at startup?

I'm sure Deron is just as troubled -- undoubtedly, a great deal more

in!

I can run 5.0.2.9 pro but it is far from stable, yet much better

Yes, I have Update #3 of OS4 installed.

Don't know if the above helps, but that is all I can offer -- at the

you're absolutely right! i also checked it here.
if you have no "preferred languages" set in your locale prefs
pagestream will not start correctly.

so, everybody having problems, check your locale prefs and set a
preferred language. save and reboot and try again.

Pagestream 4 gurus on start up or freezes at initializing and has refresh
problems, font troubles and is useless for multipage docs and many other problems.
How did you get it to work fine? Hopefull it doesn't need 1 gig mem.

I think he means Pagestream 4.1.5.6 - the 68k version.
It runs fine on my A1. (G3 XE 1Gb Update 3)
