Greetings All,

Downloaded the file 'PageStream5.0.2.10pro.lha' at 20,915,981 bytes
and unpacked same into a new directory. 'Unarc' and "List ALL"
measure the unpacked version at 54.2 MB and 57.6 MB, respectively.
Substantial!!

Hereafter, PageStream refers to "PageStream 5.0.2.10 Pro".

Noted the following:

BME:
Must be an enhanced version since it weighs in a 1,401,081 bytes now
whereas the 'old' one in version 4.1.5.6 weighs but 126,412 bytes.
However, on opening BME, a freeze set in but a soft reboot worked.

AmiDock:
I placed PageStream in AmiDock and opened it from there. Last night
this worked fine and the 'Personalization' went okay, but today I
had several failures on opening from AmiDock, hence have reverted
to opening PageStream directly from its executable icon. Discussed
below.

Screen Resolution:
PageStream opened on the Workbench screen but on trying to set up
its own screen and change screen resolution, a call to
"File -> System Preferences -> Screen..."
was ignored -- no response -- and I've had to stay with the
Workbench screen. Version 5.0.2.9 allowed one to access this menu.

Opening the Flyer Example:
The file '5.0Flyer.pgs' in 'Documents' opened with the graphics
displayed but no fonts. By adding fonts via the menu item
"File -> System Preferences -> Fonts..."
and the 'ADD' button, text appears in the Flyer. As usual, the "Font
Substitution" requester opens and clicking 'Done' allows PageStream
to continue.

Scroolbars:
They are located where they should be, but they still require an
application of key F10 to refresh the screen after each movement.
Same as in version 5.0.2.9.

Toolbar, Toolbox, and Edit Palette:
Seem okay. Cannot see any difference from 5.0.2.9. To move the
Toolbar (horizontal guy), one needs to use the Ctrl+L-Amiga trick.

File -> Preferences -> View:
Seems to work fine. I changed the "Show Grid" setting, changed the
measurement unit, and SAVEd. These changes have stuck.

Type -> Font...:
Does not work properly. On opening, the popup continues to the full
height of the Workbench screen but does NOT show all the relevant
fonts. As the fonts seems to be listed alphabetically, a font like
"Times Roman" is only accessible by going to the Edit Palette and
using the cycle gadget associated with the 'C' settings. It is
annoying to have to cycle backwards to get to "Times Normal", for
example. The popup window needs a vertical scroll bar to access a
relevant font easily. Coming, I'm sure! Smile

Edit Palette:
As soon as you click the text icon -- once a file has been opened --
the Edit Palette opens to its full size and on my Workbench screen
is nicely sized.

"File -> Save" and "File -> Save as..." :
These do not work consistently. After fiddling a bit with the
'5.0Flyer.pgs' example -- changed font size and fonts -- then "File
-> Save" and "File -> Save as..." seemed to work, but on attempting
to reopen the 'saved' version, PageStream would not open same. So
I've essentially 'lost' the Flyer example. However, the loss
occurred only after making a few changes in the file. The
'original' file opened, closed, opened, closed, etc., successfully.

Also, on creating a 'junk' file -- just a line of text -- and saving
it to RAM, a subsequent application of "File -> Open..." would not
work. Conversely, I've created a 29 page PageStream file by
inserting Ascii text, saved the rascal, opened it, saved it, opened
it etc., and everything worked.

On more than one occasion, a "File -> Save" caused PageStream to
freeze. The mouse remained active but the menus disappeared and
there was nothing that PageStream would respond to. There was NO
Grim Reaper though. Workbench remained in good order.

File -> Close:
It is unreliable. Sometimes I can open several files, then close
them, but just a few moments ago, I opened "Welcome to 5.0.pgs" --
it opened beautifully -- changed the font to "Times Roman" in both
columns so that the columns were not overloaded. Upon 'closing'
without saving, PageStream carried out the "File -> Close" and then
died. OS4.0 okay, and no GR. This has happened on several
occasions, but I don't see a pattern yet. Once PageStream freezes,
at least a warm reboot is needed.

Size gadgets:
There is a new one and it is delightful .... well ..... new to me!
The one for which the default setting is "Actual Size" and other
settings are
Full Page, Full Width, Full Height, 25%, .....
is really neat. Thanks. Not only do they work, but the display is
refreshed properly -- NO need for key F10.

Alignment:
I could not get "Type -> Alignment -> Center" to work. Did not try
others.

File -> Close:
It seems inconsistent. On opening files from "Document/Direct
Templates", then after two or three were open, a request to "File
-> Close" may be ignored. Have not noticed a pattern as which files
it will 'close' and which remain open. Once a closure command
fails, the "File -> Close" menu is ghosted for that file.

File -> New...:
It works. At least for portrait.

Layout -> Create Text Frames:
Flakey. Works most of the time, but I've had it fail. Think the
problem is with the number of columns called for. If I require but
one column, then it has worked, but on calling for 2 columns, it
seems to fail and causes PageStream to freeze.

Layout -> Link Text Frames:
It works, but the pointer does not change to the "Link Text Frames"
icon and hence one may think it is not working. Only successful
when linking "single column" pages so far.

"Edit Copy" and "Edit -> Paste":
Do not seem to work. Tried several times with the text in Lesson1.

File -> Insert Text...:
Works on inserting into a document created with "File -> New..."
where the source file is either from the examples in the directory
'text' or from Ascii files that I've created with various word
processors.

Starting Up:
Today, the A1 was brought to life via a cold start. My modem was
powered on. On clicking on PageStream, located in the AmiDock, the
modem went nuts until power to it was turned off. Did a soft reboot
or a RESET, don't recall which.

Tried again with power to the modem turned off. Loading went fine
until the "About PageStream" window got to the point "Loading
Effects...". At this point, things hung. No activity, no mouse,
very quiet. A soft reboot was ineffective. Did RESET.

UBoot started off nicely but at the point:
Loading done, now launching kickstart.
it hung. Tried a couple or RESETs and the same response. On a third,
I interrupted the UBoot process and asked for a regular reboot
manually. When the UBoot prompt ']' appeared a 'boota' did the
trick and A1 came alive.

Tried PageStream again from the AmiDock and received the same hang,
so turned the power to the A1 off.

Cold startup:
The A1 comes up okay as usual. Instead of opening PageStream from
the AmiDock, I open it from its executable icon. This time it opens
properly without hanging at "Loading Effects...". By the way, I gave
up on the version 5.0.2.9 because suddenly it would hang at
"Loading Effects..." and I decided to wait for the next version.

Fonts:
Despite being SAVEd from the last session, they had to be 'updated'
using "File -> System Preferences -> Fonts...".

The "Welcome to 5.0.pgs" Example:
Opening this file is flakey. Because of my list of fonts, it opens
with "Artistic Normal" being the basic font. When the "Font
Substitution" window appears, if I try to substitute an alternative
font at this point, the "Font Substitution" window goes nuts after
choosing a font and PageStream freezes. OS4.0 is okay and there is
no GR, but PageStream is dead.

So, if I just choose 'Done' in the "Font Substitution" window, i.e.,
accept the default, then the file opens. However, its state is
problematical. Sometimes it is an unholy mess with text running off
the page, the header line too, the graphics may cover text ......
not good. On other occasions, it has opened just fine except for
that silly "Artistic Normal" font. If I change to "Time Normal"
then the text fits into the two columns and one ends up with a good
looking page. The graphics and blending are fine.

PageStream is in its 18th year of development. That's incredible.
Smile)

Opening 'old' files:
'Old' means files saved with version 4.1.5.6. Sometimes is works and
sometimes it does not. When it does not work, PageStream freezes.

File -> Place Graphic...:
Does not work with JPEG files but I think there is something about
downloading a new version of ??? and things are okay. Have to
reread the messages on this list.

Multitasking:
Works fine while YAM is running. Once PageStream is up, I can turn
the modem on and no problems. Downloads via YAM okay while
PageStream sleeping. No further tests with other software yet.

Conclusion:
Well ..... a few things remain to be fixed up! Wink

Cheers Don (Green Dragon)

This is probably debug output being written to your first serial port and
received as commands to the modem, try connect the modem to the second
port instead.

This doesn't sound good at all and I don't think its related to
PageStream. If this starts happening more often, test for all classical
A1 problems. Start with the battery.

Hello Deron,

This is not a reply to Don. I just latched onto the message to
report that version 10 still locks my AmigaOne XE. The toolbar
appeared at the top left of the Workbench and the bottom bar started to
appear. Then my system locked, both mouse and keyboard. Had to reboot
with the button.

I will run SnoopDOS next time and send the log to support.

Thanks for sticking to all this. PageStream4 still works great on my
system with no problems.

have you given pagestream a try on a clean os4 installation?
in order to find the problem i'd suggest to do so if possible.
hopefully you have a clean partition to install os4 freshly.
maybe a simple boot from the prerelease cd (or a self made bootable
one) is sufficient to test pagestream.

IIRC, the upcoming update 4 will be an install disk. I may wait for
that and then test PageStream Pro 5 again. I use PageStream in most of
my class preparations and sure look forward to a final working release
of version 5.

i alsoe read it will be an iso image. but if this will be a complete install ur just an update to an already installed upd3 system i don't know.

hmmm... but if we do not actually find out what prevents pgs from starting at your and other peoples side we will never see a "working" version Smile
so i take this as a "i don't have a spare partition left"?

That is correct. I have the space for sure but my partitions are
used for work and I can't afford to lose any of the data.

However, once update 4 is installed I am willing to play sleuth with
PageStream5. I have not given up on finding why it does not start on
my AmigaOne. I will, in the meantime, try it on my SE. It would be
interesting to see how it fares there.

An interesting suggestion you made to Larry here.

I just tried booting from the update 3 CD. Because of the graphics
card changes in update 3, all that was available to me was fake native
mode 640x480. But once booted, I was able to do the impossible. I
could start up PgS 5.0.2.10 PPC on my A1. I even got part way into
opening two projects I had just done on Windows 5.0.1.37Pro. (no text
showed, but some line graphics came through partially.)

I rebooted to my normal partition and tried 4 different screen modes,
including Fake Native, but I was unable to get past the vertical tool
bar and "tiny window" again. So apparently something is different on
my startup to the point that it blocks PgS from running properly.

Now the only question is: What???

I'll have to try it with the original user-startup and see if anything
changes. I cringe to think of all the changes since update 3 which
will have to be checked if something simple like user-startup doesn't
change it.

I have been adding utilities, etc., since update 3. It is indeed
mind boggling that one of these or some change somewhere could stop
PageStream5 in its track. I do think I will wait until update 4 and
after installing it, try PS 5 again. I also want to try it on my SE
which has less new software installed since update 3.

Keep us informed of what you find. Interesting that you could run
PS5 once you booted off of the update disk. I enjoy sleuthing this
type of problem but as my semester starts tomorrow me time is too
limited for my enjoyment.

Well, after the difficulties mentioned above, everything has
returned to 'normal' and bootups, cold or warm, WERE proceeding as
expected. PageStream 5.0.2.10 pro WAS opening nicely, but I need to
do more testing.

Further testing:
Tried again last night.

(1) With the modem running, I tried launching PageStream 5.0.2.10pro
from AmiDock! Result? Modem was okay but Pagestream froze at the
"Loading Effects..." stage. Turned power to modem off. Warm reboot
worked. But a second launch from its executable icon failed &
brought
the same freeze, but, this time, a warm reboot failed. Did RESET.

(2) Tried launching PageStream from its executable icon. Modem was
off. Same result. Froze at "Loading Effects..." stage. Doubting
that warm reboot would work, turned A1 off.

(3) From cold reboot, launched PageStream from its executable icon.
Modem was off. Same result. Froze at "Loading Effects..." stage.
Turned A1 off.

(4) From cold reboot, launched PageStream from AmiDock. Modem was
off. Same result. Froze at "Loading Effects..." stage.

Whatever has happened to the PageStream 5.0.2.10 installation, it
consistently freezes OS4.0 and will not open. Instead of following
Michael's suggestion, I'm going to wipe it out and re-install.
Report tomorrow or later.

Since there have been no Grim Reaper appearances, would SnoopDos
have provided any information on rebooting?

Thanks for your thoughts.

So far: leaving out either user-startup or WBStartup made no
difference. I haven't tried it with both left out together yet. That
would have made it so much easier to track down the problem.

Maybe Deron will have some other ideas from my SnoopDOS log.

I know that the beta is not supposed to use any assigns, but I wonder
if one has been, inadvertently, left in the code. Perhaps you could
try either commenting out the existing Pagestream assigns in user-
startup and rebooting or doing assign to get the list and doing an
assign Pagestream: etc. to disable the original installation assigns
for beta testing.

This sounds worth investigating. I do have several assigns for
PageStream for using PS 4. Must look into this. Thanks for the
suggestion.

When I substituted my original user-startup and tried running PgS
5PRO, that already had _NO_ assigns for PgS. All that was in that
original user-startup was the MUI startup.

Or was Roy referring to some assigns coded right into the program at
this beta stage?

I beleive the thought was that maybe PageStream is grabbing old stuff from
an old assign. However, it would be pretty unlikely. Like your test, I have
no assigns on my computer at all from the older versions of PageStream. The
only assign I have that is PageStream related is "pgs:" which gets me to
the PageStream folder faster than typing it all out. It should not be used
in any part of the code.

No, I was wondering if the beta was looking for an assign before
defaulting to Progdir: and was finding the 68k, V4 Pagestream stuff.
Come on, I'm looking for a bit of cheering-up, here!

Sorry.

I was hoping it would be easy to solve, too.
