I'm using the pro version but imagine that the executables are
pretty much the same at the level you are discussing.

Not sure about the specific error message, but can confirm the
above. Just as often as not, the GR prevails and the file fails to
load.
At the point when the "font substitution" window opens , the only
safe choice here is 'Done' . If you have to, change fonts after the
doc opens.

Here, PageStream 5.0.2.10 'never' -- as best I can recall -- fails
at "Loading filters...". It frequently hangs at the "Loading
effects..." stage.
