I see that several folks have got this version to run. I deleted the .10 folder and installed the .12 version into a clean OS4.0 UD4 partition. I still get the problems I reported in

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PageStreamAmigaBeta/message/1116

I am wondering if the registration stage is leaving a problem. I am able to enter the reg. details, but Workbench freezes with an ISI problem. A reboot into the clean Workbench seems to have the program loading, but with the same problems as before.

Could anyone who has got it working on an A1G4 let me know if they had the registration problem? Also, were there any tricks involved in getting it to work?

A1G4, Radeon 7000, 512MB RAM, OS4.0 UD4. default user-startup and startup-sequence. No additional assigns. No font additions.

Roy Leith

I have a system very similar to Roy's but with 1 GB RAM. On my
system, the registration window opens fine, goes through
initialization, filters, etc. and opens the main toolbar in the default
position as a vertical left bar. However, it is grayed out and a bar
but very small appears at the bottom left. Then my system freezes. No
Grim Reaper at all.

I have the clock CPU window on my dock and when PageStream Pro 5
starts it uses all of the CPU according to that gadget. It just
continues to use all until it freezes. I waited five minutes to see if
the program was slowly loading and froze the cursor because of the
heavy CPU load, but after five minutes all was still frozen.

The registration window is slow in all its stages. I removed all my
assigns for PS 4 before starting PS Pro 5. I have not been able to use
any of the PS Pro 5 betas as they all lock my system. As you change
the betas, Deron, and mine still doesn't load, hopefully that may
provide some clues.

Thanks for continued work on my greatest computer program for any
system.

There is one difference between our PGS5PRO installations: yours
appears to be on your main boot partition and mine is on a second,
'pure' partition. However, the results are similar. I shall try the
processor utilisation check and I hope you will display the free
memory in the Workbench Title bar. It sounds as though PGS is doing
something very processor intensive that grabs unused system memory
until the system freezes to an unbootable stage.

I have a little more to add from my researches. I appended my 68k
prefs (less the registration stuff) to the V5 preferences and the
additional panels like the colour palette and page manager appeared.
The system still freezes. I am beginning to suspect that the
registration system (which GRs for me) is not creating the complete
default prefs file and that missing entries are causing problems. If
someone would like to post to me a working prefs file WITH THE
REGISTRATION STUFF DELETED I will try out my theory.

Two other things I will try,

1. Upgrading OS4 UD4 in case files have been damaged.
2. Starting again with the non-pro version.

Hi all,
are you using some AOS4 theme and not the default one?
Because I have strange behavior with some theme,
and in one case I have the freeze you mentioned,
changing to the default theme then pgs 5.0.2.12 work
in the same manner of other users on this list,
unfortunally sooner or later I get a freeze.

Regards,
Paolo

Thanks for the comment. I am using a standard UD4 install into a spare bootable partition, theme and all. I tried 'upgrading' OS4.0/UD4 in case files had been damaged, but there is no change. I, also, did a fresh install of the non-pro_.10 version into an empty drawer and got the same results as before; a slow reduction in free memory and eventually a complete system freeze that cannot be rebooted in any way from the keyboard.

Two things you could help me out with,

1. The information about the motherboard and video card (if any) you are using. Are you, perhaps, a µAOne user? I am wondering if this is a processor based problem bearing in mind that Deron is using a µA1.

2. The contents of the prefs file you are using BUT, WITH THE EARLY REGISTRATION LINES DELETED.

Roy Leith

I am using one of the 20th Anniversary themes. I may check to see
what happens without it. Worth checking out. Thanks for the tip.

I created a new PS 5 directory on my writing programs partition. I
don't put any programs on my main partition as I want to be able to
redo the OS without endangering any program or data files.

Your's does the same as Larry's, Roy? Larry's description sounds
IDENTICAL to what happens here with 5.x.x PRO PPC. With the latest .12
beta, I can actually continue to use the A1 (sort of), in that I can
still move the mouse and select other files. Earlier versions locked
up without even moving the mouse after trying to open PgS.

My program is installed on a separate partition from the system, like
Roy's, and I've tried it with the 68k PgS assigns commented out.If I
boot from the update 4 CD, i can also get the title bar of PgS along
with what Larry and I usually get open, but it's still unstable.
Removing 3rd party themes now allows the vertical toolbar and "little
box" to appear as before. With the "Chrome bolts" theme installed
under update 4, I didn't get ANYTHING on screen from PgS 5 .... .12
PRO.

What a mystery. So far, SnoopDOS logs from here haven't helped Deron.

I tried renaming my v. 4 68k prefs and using them in place of my
current PPC prefs. It put the vertical tool bar where I'd expect it
with my prefs. But other than that, same results. Trying to re-open
Thor after opening PPC PgS this way resulted in . . . . nothing.

I'll try once more appending them like you did Roy and come back to
this.

Appending them to the PPC registration info did the same as above. It
put the vertical tool bar where I like it, but otherwise didn't give
anything useable. It DID pop up a GRIM, however. When I clicked "More"
on the GRIM it froze the system completely, and gave only the
following info:
Instruction pointer 0x01423110.
DSI error
Module kernel
Alert 80000003

Other lines listed "unknown". Before the GRIM locked everything up,
the title bar of Workbench showed a loss of 2 MB about every 6
seconds.

This is on a G4-XE with 512 MB on one stick, a REALLY good cooler on
the CPU, and a Sapphire Radeon 9100 with 64 MB

Here's the user prefs file: Note, like Roy, I had only the first
4 lines in the PPC beta. The rest is appended from version 4.

Hello Paul,

It is both interesting and discouraging to see three of us having
basically the same problem. My system locks and locks hard. I do hope
we can get this solved and not be confronting some individual anomalies
of what should be identical machines.

Just so you know, I am reading and trying to figure out something to either
test or some place to start looking. Keep playing!

I've fixed a number of bugs, and I'll keep plugging till the end of the
week. Hopefully I'll at least have an idea of where to put some debug
statements in for you or something by then.

Thanks for all of your persistence. I believe it is just a matter of
time - at least from my perspective.Smile I truly appreciate both the
power and elegance of your work. Just let us know how we can provide
you with the best information.

I am curious if you have any impressions of the Micro-AmigaOne that
you could share. I assume you use a variety of computers and your
views would be interesting.

Deron.

I think you and Larry have misunderstood. I have installed OS4 on a
second partition and then booted into that before installing
Pagestream in the same partition. To try Pagestream, I boot into the
second partition and then run Pagestream. I get the same result as you
and Dr. Larry. I can use the mouse and select windows for a while, but
displaying free memory on the Workbench title bar shows that it
steadily drops until about 200MB at which time it totally freezes.

If I append my V4 pref settings to V5 prefs then I get the same as
yourself. Once the program is registered it GRs and 'More' brings the
total freeze and the indication of an ISI crash in kernel. Rebooting
into the 'pure' partition and running PGS continues to produce the
same GR and freezing.

As I say, above, I get the identical thing here.

The thing Larry, you and I have in common is an XE G4. I repeat my
plea to those who have had more success to report if it was G4/G3, XE/
SE/μA1 and to append the non-registration part of their prefs file. I
remember that IBrowse users with a μA1 initially had crashes whereas I
had none. IIRC, Deron is developing on a μA1.

Deron, you could help us a lot by publishing the default user prefs
that get appended to the registration lines after a correct
installation. I have a feeling that the registration is GRing before
the prefs are fully set up and this may prevent the program from fully
loading.

Thanks for your support.

That would not be it. You can store a default pref file in the same folder
as PageStream, and it will get loaded the first time, and when you save it
will be "copied" to the UserPrefs folder. However, I don't ship with one,
and one is not needed. Until you go to prefs and save yourself, nothing is
kept in the user prefs except your personal data.

Normally, if a problem is going to occur in prefs, the problem is related
to old stuff. I would be very surprised if a problem develops because of
not having old prefs Wink Not saying it isn't possible, just unlikely.

After you enter your registration details, and it crashes, does it ask for
the details the next time around? Ie, did your details get written to
UserPrefs/PageStream5.prefs ??

Agreed, that is totally different than what Paul(?) was saying.

Well, it would be nice if this is caused by something as simple as a line
in prefs. If isolated I can try and reproduce it here. If you can email me
the pref file at support@ I will see if it crashes here.

I'm curious if anyone who is crashing after registration has a previous
pref file however. Standard behaviour I would think would be to install the
new PageStream in a new folder with no defaults.

I know this is someone else writing this, but I missed it before. These
panels appearing are as a result of your prefs because the default is only
the edit palette, toolbar and toolbox to be open. Them know opening doesn't
really mean to much.

I can enter my registration and that is fine the next time around.
However, I cannot get to the prefs as my system locks as soon as a
toolbar or two appears.

I installed all the betas in their own directory with no prefs. I
eliminated the assigns from PS 4 which continues to work well with no
problems.

Thanks, Paolo. I copied the prefs data to my prefs file, but PGS is
still behaving as before. You have confirmed that it is not hardware
related. The main difference between your system and mine and Dr.
Larry's is the video card. I use the same sil680 as you, but I think
Dr. Larry is using a SATA drive.

That's the end of my bright ideas. I will have to wait for Deron to
produce a bughunter.

I tried copying the prefs offered by other contributors and, you are
quite correct, nothing changes. Thanks for the info that only the
personal data is stored by default. It seems that this is happening
successfully on registration.

It does not ask for registration details a second time. It seems
satisfied by the personal data copied into the user prefs file.

BTW other XE G4 users have mentioned that they have got it going, so I
have to withdraw my suggestion of processor problems!

PS The 68k version of V4 is working very well with JIT. It's a handy
way of printing out .c files in a compact font to reduce word
wrapping. The files print much more speedily with JIT.

I do have a SATA drive. I also installed the recent updated ide
drivers. I agree with Roy that bug hunting is the only way to solve
this mystery.

Deron,

Yeah, what Larry said. This is what mine does, too. Mouse selection
still works for me in a limited way after the vertical tool bar opens,
but other programs will not run.

Last night I booted from my update 4 CD and had some fun playing with
the latest PPC PgS beta. . . 5... .12.

This morning I installed a bog standard update 4 system onto a spare
partition and hard booted into it. Pagestream would not open. Same
behavior as on my main System: partition: vertical tool bar, "little
window" and a more or less disabled Ami.

Anything you want me to try here, Deron? This is with 5...12 installed
into its own partition, with PgS assigns to 4.x 68k PgS commented
out or left in place. Neither works. I've tried it with the default
800x600 screenmode from the fresh install and with a Radeon 9100
1024z768 32 bit Screenmode on the fresh OS install. No difference.

Yes, I have setup version 5.0.2.12 and it runs, although I've done
very little experimenting so far. We're using essentially the same
machine (my Radeon is version 9000) but I'm still at Update #3 for
OS4.0.

I cannot be of much help as the registration here went without any
problems.

No assigns here, but I've set things up so that the fonts from
version 4.1.5.6 are available.

Did you add the fonts *after* PGS ran, by using System Prefs/Fonts or
did yu copy fonts into the PGS5 fonts drawer? After the Charsets
weirdness, I'll look at anything!
