Hello Deron and All,

I just made an interesting and highly discouraging discovery. As I
can't get PageStream5 Pro to open completely, I use PageStream4. It
has been a workhorse for my handouts for classes and public audiences.
It just can't be beat for making astounding handouts.

However, after installing update 4, I find that PageStream4 can't
find the fonts I use the most - Times-normal and Triumvirate-normal.
(Not sure I spelled them correctly.) These are in all my documents.
Now neither shows in my font list and they are not in any of the font
directories of PageStream4. I downloaded version 4 again just to check
the fonts. Interestingly, no textbooks with those fonts show either.
The area in which those fonts were used are blank. If I drag the
pointer across where they ought to be no highlighting occurs. However,
I can change the fonts from the toolbar for fonts.

I can also change which fonts are used when a file is started. If I
change to a currently listed font, the files load fine with those
fonts.

Are or were Times-Normal and Triumvirate-Normal system fonts? If
not, where exactly are they?

On another issue, I have added system fonts to PageStream4 or at
least tried to. They do not show up in the program. Can they be
added? Would any directories within the sys:fonts directory need to be
added separately, such as the Times sub-directory?

Thanks for any help. I can't live without my PageStream working!

Talk to you later.

As I understand it, the "improved" font rendering in Update 4 made them
obselete and they are no longer used as system fonts.

So I just added them back in from my backups, ran "System:Fixfonts" to find them
and add them to the total, and then Pagestream4 worked as before.

Probably not what the designers wanted, but it worked for me.

Regards,
Chris.

Hmm. I know the problem, but the brain is not dredging that deep today. Two
things. One, refresh your font paths inside PageStream. Two, a system font
file called Bullet or some such is used by the compugraphic font engine in
PageStream. That may be missing and your problem.

Someone else might now remember what I am trying to remember. It just isn't
coming to me right now... (I think the FAQ may cover this in the
documentation. I'll go check,,,

Yup, here it is fromhttp://www.pagestream.org/showdocs.php?id=124

Compugraphic fonts don't work

If you cannot get your Compugraphic Intellifonts to display, you are
probably missing the Fonts:_Bullet/plugin.types file. This file is included
with AmigaDOS and is required by PageStream's Compugraphic font engine. If
you have removed it from your hard drive to save space, you must reinstall
it from your AmigaDOS disks to use Compugraphic Intellifonts with PageStream4.

To da! Good luck

Hello Deron,

Thanks for the answer. I also posted to AmigaOS4 group as someone
else may have the same problem. My understanding is that the fonts
were removed in update 4. I just need to reload them from update 3.

Keep up the good work and thanks again for one heck of a program.

The actual CS Times and CS Triumvirate fonts should be in your PageStream
archive. Those fonts were different than the ones that C= distributed
because they actually match the postscript font metrics for Adobe Times and
Helvetica. The Bullet file I mentioned just fills in the holes for things
like symbols (square root, bars, etc), but is required by PageStream. I
never put it in the archive, but we have the right to distribute the file
if need be. Just never saw the need since every computer was supposed to
come with it Wink

Hello Deron,

Putting it in the PageStream distribution may make sense. I used
those fonts extensively and I hate the thought of replacing them one
document at a time.

BTW, what Times font would you recommend for general use in
documents? I would like a PostScript or similar font. Any
recommendation appreciated.

That should be 'Ta Da! No luck was required. I had to replace the
folders from my OS3.9 installation. None of the OS4.0 installs had
them. Pagestream V4 immediately started loading files with the old
fonts. Thank you, Deron.

My OS4.0 PGS installation has all the font files I used in 3.9 already
installed. Other folk may have to add them to the appropriate PGS
drawers.

The directory Fonts:_bullet, and Fonts:_bullet_outlines were left off of the
Update#4 CD.
These two directories, and the relevant .font and .otag files need to be
copied to your update'4 sys:fonts directory.
Also if you use other compugraphic fonts, they wn't be recognised without
the fonts:_bullet directory.

For some reason, the bullet.library was included but the above directories
weren't.

As a side note to this. Deron can you look at the pagestream mailing list as
I am having some issues using/installing japanese unicode ttf fonts???

It would seem best to add these fonts to the PageStream font drawer
so they would not be vulnerable to OS changes. Can I just copy the
directories over to the PageStream font directory? That would seem
feasible but too often what seems so reasonable in theory is not
possible in practice.

Thanks for all the help with PageStream.

The Fonts:_bullet, and Fonts:_bullet_outlines directories have to be in
Sys:fonts, as do the .font and .otag files for the fonts in
fonts:_bullet_outlines.
The bullet.library which is in sys:libs uses the files in Fonts:_bullet to
utilise intellifonts.
The .font and .otag files tells the OS where to find the original font file
and what font engine to use to display them.

If you move them from there default location, you will either have to
re-install them, or put in several assigns to add them to your Fonts: path.

Thanks Peter, that was useful information. Fortunately, here the files referred
to are in their 'right' place. Smile
