I don't know if I am making progress, but here goes.

I can only run PGS for the first time after booting (a clean boot partition with the beta version of PGS) by renaming the Softlogik folder. Otherwise I get the two toolboxes and nothing works. The OS attempts a GR repeatedly. After renaming Softlogik I can open a new document from a light grey navigator window, edit it and quit without saving.

Restoring the Softlogik folder and running PGS a second time I get the Navigator bar with a dark grey background (an old prefs change I made, I think). Again, I can open a new document and edit it. Attempting to save it causes the continued attempts at a GR reported against the previous beta. Quitting without saving is fine. PGS can run through this cycle without problems. If I try to open one of the example documents a blank document window appears and the continued attempts to GR occur.

In summary, there is a difference in the way the program works between booting the OS and running PGS for the first time and running it subsequent times. It will only produce the two toolbars and no navigator the first time. If it is first run with Softlogik disabled and then run again with Softlogik enabled then it starts OK and allows a new document to be created. However, attempting to save a new document or open an example document causes repeated GRs and the program stops operating (windows can be selected, but no menus or other functionality is available).

Please let me know if you would like the Snoopdos logs, again.

On impulse, I ran the beta from my normal Workbench and it worked. I was able to open the sample documents. I guessed that the problem from the clean Workbench was either an MUI class or running on its own public screen. I copied my normal MUI folder across and reinstalled and reregistered the beta. I got the same behaviour as reported at the top of this thread when running from the clean Workbench, but it runs OK (with some GR DSIs) from the normal Workbench.

Anyone got any clues as to what the difference between Workbenchs might be that is causing this? I may reinstall the clean Workbench and try again.

it also crashed here when i started it. i deleted my prefs file and
found it starting perfectly from that time on.
i have the impresseion that one of the palette windows (docs, pages or
styles) is causing this.

try deleting the pagestream prefs file
(PageStream5PPC/UserPrefs/PageStream5.prefs) and give it a go.

btw... still pagestream can only be started *one time*. when quitting
the correspodning message ports seems not to be freed.

i don't think it has anything to do with the "workbench" Wink
reasons could be:
- different "themes"
- different running commodities
- different library versions

if you have time and space on your harddisk it would be a good job to
gradually turn a "clean" os4 installation into your "misbehaving" one
to see what exactly may cause this.

That's the problem. The OS4.0 installation that misbehaves is the
'clean' one. The nasty, dirty, dog-eared one I use on a daily basis is
the one that does not misbehave.

Thanks for the thoughts, though. The theme used in both installations
is the default. There may be differences in the prefs, though. The
libraries should be identical unless some were updated during post-UD4
installations (perhaps the IDE drivers update, for instance). I think
the commodities are the same, although the 'dirty' installation may
have one or two extras. I might try some of the GCC tools to compare
the files in the installations. Got to use those horrid GUI-less
commandline things, though.

I think I might try Michael Merkel's suggestion of deleting the prefs
file and starting again.

Ah! Mine is broken in an entirely different way!

When I run PGS from a newly-booted, clean OS4.0 installation for the
first time and without the Softlogik folder disabled, I get no
Navigator. All I get is two toolbars, which are non-functional, and no
menus. Eventually, the whole system freezes due to repeated attempts
to GR. If I run the same PGS installation from my newly booted,
regular OS4.0 installation then I get the Navigator and all the
features.
