Probably more detail than is necessary, dexcribing my attempts to use PageStream, Amiga version.

I'm trying to learn to use PageStream5. No luck so far.

I'm using version 5.0.3.3, a 4,462,485B file dated 06-Jul-06. I have
read the ReadMe.Amiga.txt and ReadMe.txt. Most of what I have tried
is by following directions in the on-line PageStream Documents.

The PageStream drawer contains a semi-human figure in red and yellow
labeled "PageStream5" and an icon that looks like a drafter's table
labeled "BME," which I learn from on-line documentation is a bit-map
editor.

If I click on the figure, I get a small window "PageStream Navigator"
with an empty string gadget "Tip." By clicking on "Prev" or "Next"
gadgets, I can get the first line of 49 different tips, and if I
expand the window, I an display all the lines at once.

Meanwhile in the upper left corner of the screen are a vertical
window with a Close gadget, a fronting/backing gadget, and a bunch of
icons, and a horizontal tool window. There is another tiny window
with only a front/back gadget with a little square in it. Everything
at this stage is ghosted except the tiny window and the "new" and
"open" tools.

If I click on Preferences in the Navigator, I get a list of things
that I might be able to set. Two, Files and Editors, are dead.
Still, it might be nice to know what setting some of these things
would do, so I click "Help" in the Preferences window: After
assigning pgs: I get a new window, "PageStream5 Output," reading:

pgs:hhv: Unknown command
pgs:hhv failed returncode 10

So I cancel Preferences without setting anything.

I try opening an existing document (5.0 Flyer.pgs), and get a "Font
Substitution" window. Nine fonts listed, from Arial Narrow to
Wingdings. I am theoretically offered the choice of "Display As" or
"Convert To," but there are no choices of anything to convert to.
There is a ">>" gadget; if I click on it, I get a window labeled
"Font" with Triumvirate-Normal, the only possible selection,
selected. I click "Done," not having done anything.

A small window opens up. I am able to look at something page by
page: 1/2, 2/2, 3/2, and 4/2; the last two have nothing on them but
dots and lines. The first page has what look like three tiny
requester windows, enlarging the page to 133% makes the writing on
them almost, but not quite, legible.

Giving up on that, I next try a new file. I first create a text
frame, put in an insertion point, and try typing. The cursor at the
insertion point blinks at each stroke, but no text appears in the
frame. Next I try "Insert Text." I choose a file and get an "Insert
Text" requester. I can't make that work either.

I reload 5.0 Flyer.pgs and try printing it. I make guesses in the
requesters, maybe the wrong ones (didn't try any PPD), and click
"Print." A "Printing" window with a progress bar opens and after a
while disappears. Nothing happens at the printer (PS, = prtSmile. I
try again, printing to file, and then copy the PS file to prt: and
the result is that now I can read the tiny print in the document on
paper. The windows turn out to be "Line & Fill," "Print Setup," and
"Transform" requesters on the first of two pages, dangling in empty space.

After a few tries at inserting the three texts in Pagestream/texts, I
close PageStream, and give up for now.

Quite a lot of PGS5 has not been implemented, yet. HHV is an html
display program that has not been PGS5ed yet.

Open PagestreamPPC/Help/Softlogik.html in AWeb or IBrowse and you
will be fine.

Go back to the website and see if you are entitled to download the
last PGS4 68k version and this will be fine with OS4.0 for learning
Pagestream.

You are two fonts short of a publisher. Go back to the download site
and download the PGS5 compatible font archive. It is still in beta.

If you get hold of the 68k version and have the files from OS3.5-3.9
then it is worth copying Fonts/_bullet, and _bullet_outlines into
your OS4.0 Workbench/Fonts drawer.

Then, in Pagestream, go File/System Preferences/Fonts and add both
the Workbench/Fonts drawers and the PagestreamPPC/Fonts drawers to
the font preference settings. Then you should see both fonts and
alternatives.

Its the font drought.

Printing is not implemented, yet. When you print, you get a print
requester with a Save button. This saves a bit-image of the printed
pages wherever you point it to.

If you are entitled to it, use the 68k version for learning and real
work and then check out the PPCV5 version to see what the new changes
and features are going to be when its done.

the current os4 version is quite ok - not finished yet but useable for some
tasks.

hhv is a small html viewer for the help files. unfortunately missing yet.
the old 68k version has it. but you can view the docs with your favorit
browser manually instead.

> So I cancel Preferences without setting anything.

no real need to change anything at first. the only thing you should/must
change is the font setting. see below.

> I try opening an existing document (5.0 Flyer.pgs), and get a "Font
> Substitution" window. Nine fonts listed, from Arial Narrow to

this may be because no fonts are "installed" in pagestream. to do so go to
the menu file -> system preferences -> fonts. you then see the list of
currently installed fonts - maybe empty.
as a start add your ttf fonts directory from os4. press the "add" button and
chose yout ttf fonts drawer (usually sys:fonts/_TrueType). you also can add
your postscript fonts drawer if existent (sys:fonts/_GhostScript).
after that save the font settings.

to check if they work just create a new document (empty) and then select the
"text tool" - the letter "A" in pagestreams toolbox. the mouse pointer then
is a "line" instead of a pointer. click somewhere on the page to place it.
then go to the menu type -> font -> chose. if everything is ok so far you
will see all your /installed) fonts listed there also showing an example
text.

if you now retry to load the supplied documents you should be able to chose
a "replacement font" and actually see a result.

postscript printing should actually work fine. for example in a file. this
is the methid i usually use.

Hello Michael

Thanks! Everything you suggested on 02/13/2007 worked. Now I'll go back
and check into some of the other things Roy suggested.

When you wrote:

did you mean you do it the way I did, namely save to file and copy that to
the printer?

Indeed, it seems I am entitled to download a number of things. I hope it
stays that way until I figure out if MS Word Text Import Filter might be as
handy as it sounds.

Got it. Saved them all in PageStream/fonts for now. I suspect I will have
a lot of duplication with Sys:Fonts.

I had my choice of three 68k versions. I got the latest, as you suggested,
but an attempt to install it brought bad tidings: "Your system is missing
the Fonts:_bullet/plugin.types file. ... You MUST reinstall this file
..." Too bad my A2K doesn't work anymore.

You guys have got me well started. Thanks much.

yes.

since chistmas we have a new printer. unfortunately not supported in any way by os4 - and no postscript.
i usually print to a ps file and print that file by using ghostscript on our windows machine.

If you download the latest 4.1.5.x version (think x=Cool then the '_bullet/' and

The only PGS I was able to download in the 4.1.5 neighborhood was 4.1.5.6
(2,884,728B; 02/03/2003), and I scrolled through the 1,746 files the
archive includes without finding any that had a "_b..." in their name.

IIRC, Deron had put together a legacy font directory which could be
separately downloaded. He did this great service for those of us who
had extensively used those fonts in our documents. Not sure where the
file is on the website.

Without the file most of my documents opened with empty text boxes.
Was unnerving as there was no error message. This was a result of
changing the system fonts in AmigaOS 4.

Right. At the very top of the list under Product Dowlload and above the Amiga-OS3-68k files is a file titled PageStream Fonts v0.2. It's a little under 5 Meg in length.

I had already downloaded that, but it isn't kind enough to include the
_bullet things.

However, I got them from another source, and was able to install PgS4 and
will no doubt have it running without getting Grimly Reaped with a little
tweaking of the fonts that came with it.
