I have added the -truetype directory from system:fonts containing the above
menthioned fonts. The problem still remains.
Strange, if I open Notepad which happens to use the font Dejavu sans, the
euro-characters are ok, but in Pagestream I still get the same
sun-characters. Notepad says it is using character map ISO-8859-15, is the
same character map used in Pagestream, or can it be forced to do so?

Kind regards

In PageStream open

File -> Preferences... -> Type

and go to the 'CharSet' field. There you can choose the
option

ISO 8859-15

which is the setting I have here because ISO 8859-15 is
supposed to include the Euro sign. However, looking in the
Times and Triumvirate fonts I cannot find the Euro sign
either.

I think we need to know the Ctrl-D code for the Euro sign,
but I don't know what it is.

new version of Pagestream? Unfortunately it works only with new version
properly (and new version still unusable, because it still unstability)

type -> insert->character

find euro-character and insert it - You can see also ctrl+d code

You are referring to the 5.0.x.y versions of PageStream?

But here the 'insert-character' popup does not display the
Euro sign.

If the font has the Euro character it should be in the dialog. If the font
follows Unicode it will be ctrl-d 08364

From your comments and a little experimentation, I guess
those fonts that are familiar in PageStream (Times-Normal,
Triumvirate-Normal, ...) just do not have the Euro
character ¤. I found the Euro character in the fonts

Bitstream Vera Sans-Roman
Bitstream Vera Serif-Roman
DejaVu Sans-Book
DejaVu Serif-Book

Here in YAM, I am using "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono" and it
also supports the Euro character ¤. However in YAM this
font looks fine but in PageStream it looks terrible. I'm
wondering if the printed characters will look that bad and
I use PageStream at the highest resolution possible here
1280x1024.

Is there some sort of 'smoothing' parameter that one has to
set in PageStream in order to use the Bitstream fonts?
I.E., so that they look 'nice'!

The big shock was the plethora of 'extra' characters
available in the Bitstream and DejaVu fonts, especially
DejaVu Sans-Book. Characters like I've never seen before:
Greek letters with acute or grave accents, Cryllic
characters, characters with marks above AND below the
character. Even found the "does not belong to" character
used in set theory and a proper symbol for infinity --
crazy man! So for technical writing, depending on one's
discipline, there may be a big advantage of using one or
both of these font families, as long as the printed
characters are not so pixel ugly. Wink

That would be expected as they were all created long before the Euro symbol
came into being. The "sun" symbol is to my knowledge a generic currency
symbol and it wouldn't surprise me if in European versions of fonts the Euro
symbol started to be used in its place, hence the confusion between the two.

That has to do with onscreen rendering. If I remember correctly the TTF
rendering engine in the Amiga version of PgS left a lot to be desired. That
said, it provides capabilities necessary for PgS that go beyond simply
providing a nicely smoothed onscreen display. Printed the character should
look just fine.

If you want a really thorough coverage take a look at Junicode (free or
shareware) or Cyberbit/Cyberbase (free if you can find a source). The last
two are the same font except that Cyberbase omits a number of Asian
characters. And even those only cover a portion of the basic multilingual
plane (BMP).

Yes, Morphos version is still unusable.
