Hi fellow Amiga users!

http://amigans.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=7866#forumpost7866

Typesmith was great, but the pretender is coming.

Kind regards

Hello Lazar,

I see no mention of AmigaOS of any version on the AbiWord website. I
do like the idea of a general open source office suite. I do hope some
are seriously working an Amigatized version.

The thread was AbiWord, but the reference was to FontForge as a replacement
for TypeSmith -- I guess that is being ported or is otherwise available
(through some unix/x11 compatibility interface?)

Thanks for the clarification. I never did use TypeSmith that much.
However, I would like to see a real word processor for the Amiga.
Ideally, it should load Final Writer files and itself be loadable into
PageStream. We can hope.

Exactly. FontForge is not yet available but it wil be.
It runs on Cygnix as well as The Gimp, Amaya and others
Cygnix is here:

On a fast enough Amiga, you can use Pagestream itself as a word
processor.

Personally, I prefer to use a plain text word processor (Transwrite),
and then when the words are right, import them into Pagestream if any
layout is needed. Otherwise, you start fiddling around with fonts when
you should be thinking what to say.

(For a magazine article, only ASCII text is needed as the magazine's
designer will do the layout.)

It is less a question of fonts in terms of a word processor than
fomatting of documents. I need that for articles and handouts that use
footnotes, references, appendices. etc. PageStream (PS) can indeed do
all that but it is cumbersome for long diverse documents. Text editors
don't do that type of formatting well. A text editor is very useful
for programming and creating Readme files which I do for CD's I
distribute to students.

I like PS for short handouts, especially with graphics. The drawing
tools in PS are very well done and easy to use. And they allow
placement and sizing in a very precise manner. I do use it for longer
handouts that have lots of graphics and like the master page capability
which is also well done and easy to use.

LaTeX is very, very good for that kind of work. Used it myself for years
when I had such needs, and nothing really beats LaTeX.

Then my needs changed, and LaTeX was not suited for these need tasks,
and then I started using PGS.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at it.

The problem with TeX is that everything comes out looking the same.

Maybe this post will actually get through...

Hi,

FontForge is a nice font editor, especially for TrueType. However,
TypeSmith is still the only program out there that I know of that
loads/saves in CompuGraphic and the old PageStream font formats.

I'm glad to here it is coming. I've thought about porting it in the
past, but I have to make money...
