Hi Deron,
I installed Pagestream5.0.3.3 yesterday on my A4000/OS4 and, after
complaining that softlogik.font fails on gliph #126, it worked!
Used to release 4, I am not extremely confortable with the MUI
approach, but I understand it may help with the cross-platform
maintainance, so long live MUI Smile
Now I have to figure how to set up the fonts, but first of all it
seems that scrolling does not work correctly, i.e. the screen does not
scroll when moving scrollbars, you need a redraw. May this be
connected with simple/smart refresh?
I see some time has passed since the last version, do you plan a new
one in the near future?

Thanks a lot for your hard work and for your support of the Amiga!

Best regards,
Stefano

Hello Stefano,

Yes, it has been a long time between dances! However, I am working on
new Amiga releases now. The OS4 version will be first out just because
that is the first one I found in the boxes and I only can get one out at
a time right now Wink I've been trying to get a number of new features
moved over to the Amiga libraries so the newest PageStream will run on it.

Is this the PPC or 68K version of PgS? And it's the non-Pro version?

I was never able to get PgSPro PPC 4.1.8.3 to start on my XE without
crashing, so I am still using PgS 68K 4.1.5.6.

Out of interest, does anyone have a PPC version of PgS running on an XE?
Which version if so?

5.0.3.3 pro running relatively good here.
i usually use both - the old 68k one for things not working in the os4 one
yet and the os4 one for "finishing" and printing. (postscript/pdf).

I have version 4.1.8.3 68k and OS4 PPC version 4 and OS4 PPC version 5 running on my A1 XE. the 68k one is the one I use because there are so many problems with the OS4 PPC versions. They aren't really usable for serious work.

It is the PPC pro version.

Hi Steve,

<<snip>>.

SB> Out of interest, does anyone have a PPC version of PgS running on an XE?
SB> Which version if so?

Yes, although one could argue about 'running'. I have version PageStream Pro
5.0.3.3 on my AmiDock, but rarely use it. It 'runs' but because of the fact
that the screen will not refresh automatically after moving the vertical or
horizontal sliders, I do not use 5.0.3.3 for any practical work. The regular
'workhorse' here remains 4.1.5.6 which is not PPC (I think....).

Until you queried as above, I had not opened 5.0.3.3 since upgrading from OS4.0
Final to OS4.0 Final + July 2007 upgrade. So I gave it a whirl just now and the
response was less encouraging that when running under just OS4.0 Final.

+ The Toolbox locks in place over the Toobar and although there is a generic
Amiga key combination to move the creature, I forget what that combination is
... Smile .

+ I can open a text frame, but Futura Book II is the only font available, but I
don't have that font anywhere. On the other hand, I've advised 5.0.3.3 where it
can find loads of fonts, but they do not seem to be accessible. Probably some
fine tuning that I've missed. Although in PageStream4 there is a
«PageStream4.fontprefs» file, I cannot find the equivalent file for
PageStream5!?!?!?

+ Upon attempting to get 5.0.3.3 to use its own screen mode -- as opposed to the
Workbench screen where it is a pain in the neck -- I ran into an MUI
requestor!!! After some fiddling, chose an appropriate screen mode for opening
(same one used for PageStream 4.x), but on attempting to close PageStream, all
the menus disappeared ..... Despite SAVEing the MUI settings, on rebooting
5.0.3.3 opened again on the Workbench screen.

+ It does not take very long before the Grim Reaper puts in an appearance. I
probably should reinstall 5.0.3.3 but ....

+ As best I can recall, Michael Merkel is the only person who is using Pro
5.0.3.3 for serious work.

I doubt that it is quite ready to be used, but it was great to hear (yesterday,
I think) that Deron is working on the PPC versions. We need to extend our
patience a bit more! Wink

I don't think I had opened PgS5 since July either, so I gave it a try.

In addition to the toolbox/toolbar problem, I was treated with the necessity
of punching the Reset key (I had already had a yellow-rimmed warning about
a font problem that I don't remember ever getting before). And then Uboot
gave me only Dingbat-like characters when I tried to type in my boot
string, until I typed ctrl^Z.

Maybe I'll try again some time when I have nothing real to do.

I'm afraid I've not had much joy with PgSPro PPC 4.1.8.3 here on my G4/XE.
It frequently freezes my A1 and I have neverending problems with
window/palette positioning eg. Remember Window Positions is non
functional, using the MUI window snapshot gadgets sorta works, but you
cannot snapshot the vertical toolbox because there is no space for that
gadget to appear. Even selecting PgS to run on its own screen via MUI
works for a few times I start PgS - then it will appear on the Workbench
screen and I have to go back to reselect the screen in MUI again.

If I copy my 68K 4.1.5.6 prefs across to Pro, that at least fixes the
palette positioning (what happened to MUI managing this??) but PgS becomes
unstable and locks frequently.

I'll carry on with the 68K version until Deron releases the next Amiga
update. I use PgS Pro5 on my PC and would love that version on my Amiga
(and my Mac!!) too when Deron manages to get things stable enough. When
that day comes I'll be over at the PgS upgrade page with my Mastercard
real quick :^).

I doesn't freeze here, but none of the PPC versions are really useable as I see it.
you can't edit objects since many tools are not accessible (reshape, crop rotate etc
infact in version 5 you have to add those tools manually to the "tool bar" in order
to be able to use them)
You can't modify or add colors by "visually selecting them" unless you know by
memorywhat color is 34%Blue, 48%Red and 91%green..
well I'm not going to list all the things you can not do ;-P
So basically there is nothing in PGS4PPC you can or can't archive with PGS5PPC

I use PGS5 when I have to create some objects with transparency in a project. And
both PPC-versions are pratical for the final adjustements of a project having a better
(i.e. antialiased) ande more exact WYSIWYG display.

I really, really hope Deron drops development of PageStream4 PPC and concentrates
on version 5!!
