Another problem I am noticing is that the 4 cursor keys on my OS X Pgs
don't work as cursor keys at all but instead insert a "ÿ" (y with umlaut)
glyph when using Arial.ttf.

Does anyone else see this? This is such a fundamental problem, surely.

Yes I do, the problem exists.
Changing the font, make to change the character typed.
Surely, cursor keys do not work as cursor keys, but they work as
insert type instead.

Just FYI, that character is typically displayed when the character is a
NULL.

Same answer as before Wrong list, go back to .19, known problem with
.20.
