hi Don,

Did you get further with 5.0.5.2? If so, try deleting the postscript.prt
driver from softlogik/printers. Just a hunch, but I see it died just
after reading the bitmap printer driver. You can try that either way,
just curious if this is the same or different from before (not much has
changed which is why I ask).

I tried removing the Postscript driver. No change.
Tried removing also the bitmap driver. No change.

I didn't have time to test version 5.0.5.2 before you posted 5.0.5.3,
but I recall that 5.0.3.1 did get as far as opening a document window
before giving up.

(No yellow alerts at all, BTW.)

Hi Deron,

How do I record a stack trace on OS3.x? Under OS4 I'd send you Grim Reaper's crashlog; which tools do I have to have installed on my WinUAE/OS3.9 setup? I run WinUAEEnforcer and Mungwall but they don't report anything.

folks were getting. That was the only set of crash logs I got that
pointed to anything. With random crashes, snoopdos/sashimi is just not
that useful, but a 68k stack trace is!

(and please keep this on the Amiga Beta mailing list)

Hmm. If Mungwall/enforcer doesn't catch the error, I'm not sure how on
OS3 you can get a stack trace. Anyone else?

Hello Deron!

This version is definitively reached the state that we can
try out. It works without the alerts. Congrats!
It has tons of problems, but I am sure that you already
knows it.

What is the next step?
Do you want to hear problems with functions or gui related
ones? Discuss here or post to the bug tracker?

The most annoying for me currently is the dynamic window
size of the edit palette. If you could get rid of it in a
following release that would be nice.

Thanks for supporting us!

I wish everyone has gotten as far along as you, but it is a start.

Just report here, since most folks don't use the bug tracker and the
discussion here could help others. I'll keep the bug list in the Amiga
readme file. Report as you see fit.

Lucky!

It looks like I am out of the game for the nonce. I have reinstalled 5.0.5.3
three times, but attempts to run it from the shell give me a line feed and
a dead mouse and, except for the Ctrl^LAmiga^RAmiga signal, a dead
keyboard.

I can tell the Amiga isn't really dead, because the on-screen clock keeps
ticking away, but I can't get so must as a Grim Reaper.

I wonder what is the difference between my machine and yours?

Hello Bart

I have OS4.1 pegII. Copied PGS5 to a drawer called
PageStream5. Before run it I dismount assign connected to
other PGS install:
assign pagestream: dismount
assign pagestream4: dismount
assign softlogik: dismount

There is no env-var for PGS5. (For user home and app path).

have you tried from a clean os4.1 installation? or, if you don't have a
clean partition, by booting from the os4.1 iso?

this is definitely because you have no prefs file yet... just checked. pgs
does not start up if the registration window should come up Sad

Hi!

With 5.0.5.3 the yellow GURUs are gone, startup of the program is
*really* long. I suppose a lot of "it doesn't work at all"-messages come
from not being patiend enough to wait for PGS to start. On my SAM440ep
with OS4.1 it opens it's main display after 30 sec to 1 min. I were able
to register, to open a document, alter the preferences etc., BUT the
opening of every window can last up to 1 min.! Lázi's PEG is of course
faster than my SAM, so it might feel a littlebit snappier with his
machine.

BTW: While waiting for opening of screens or windows there is heavy CPU
load, my AmiDock CPU meter raises to 100% and stays there until the plan
(should I open a requester?) is fulfilled Wink

Frank.

You might try running something like sashimi. This version of PageStream
is dumping a _lot_ of data to the "serial" port. It may very well be the
delay is related to the sending of such data?

As I said, once we get documents loading up for most folks, I can take
most of it out for the rest of debugging.

Hello again,

these are my quick and dirty Sashimi/GrimReaper outputs:

1_sa_debug: Starting PGS from Shell, Stack 550000 until first crash
(without Sashimi this leads to a OS4 GrimReaper, with Sashimi PGS quits
here).
2_Crashlog: Starting PGS from Shell, Stack 550000 without Sashimi running,
raising GrimReaper.
2_sa_debug: While the GrimReaper is open, starting Sashimi again, hitting
Grims "Ignore" button, waiting 'til PGS startup is complete.
3_sa_debug: Open "About" via menu, close the Requester afterwards.
4_sa_debug: Open Project/Preferences, close by clicking "use".
5_sa_debug: Open "TestDocument.pgs", hit "ok" to the font subst. requester,
waiting until the document is opened and drawn.
6_sa_debug: click the black filled square in the document, use "duplicate"
from the menu.
7_sa_debug: Opening Project/Printer settings, select "A4", switch to
Postscript, select A4 letter, open "Apple-LS.ppd", change device to use
"PRT:", click "use".
8_sa_debug: Quit PGS.

Hope this might help a littlebit - i packed the files with lha due to their
size.

Regards,
Frank

Not yet. I don't see why 5.0.5.2 should boot from a "dirty" installation,
but not 5.0.5.3. I was going to give the boot from iso bit a try, sooner or
later, but then came this:

Sure enough, I copied FontUsage, PageStream5.prefs, and PageStream5 Fonts,
and 5.0.5.3 popped open a screen in a scant 18 seconds!

I was able to open a new document, and start typing directly, or into a text
frame, changing fonts willy-nilly!

Two attempts to open a ready-made document failed, though. After selecting
the document, I waited about three minutes with a dead mouse arrow, then
rebooted.

So far the Edit Palette here is not a problem. But see below.

LZ> Thanks for supporting us!

Agree wwith Lazar fully (except Edit palette), especially with respect to last
comment.

Confirm that 5.0.5.3 opens from a shell with the minor annoyance of having to
click away the alert that complains about glyph #126. I copied the
«PageStream5.prefs» file from version 5.0.5.2 into the 5.0.5.3 settings and
PageStream 5.0.5.3 opened in 10 to 15 (max) seconds after chasing away the
"glyph #126" alert.

Toolbar and Edit palette are in place, Navigator open, and mouse is alive. The
best is NO MORE yellow-on-black alerts before I can move the mouse. OUTSTANDING
Deron!

Now the not so good news. If I try to access any submenu of the FILE menu, then
PageStream freezes. After waiting at least two minutes, still dead. Have to
reboot.

Also, attempting to access buttons in the Navigator -- such as NEW or OPEN --
cause the same freeze. I've also tried a cold reboot, but no difference in
behaviour.

In other words, PageStream 5.0.5.3 opens nicely (from shell), but any action
tried (so far) leads to a solid freeze; i.e., one cannot even return to the
Workbench.

When I read the above success, I was spitting mad. Bart wins again! So I copied

+ FontUsage from version 5.0.5.2 into UserPrefs in the new guy
+ «PageStream5 Fonts» from version 5.0.3.3 (since I know they work in 5.0.3.3)
into the same location.

On opening, I am able to use the NEW option from the Navigator. On previous
trial that failed.

Then the «create a text box» icon worked to display an 'almost' invisible text
box. Started
typing and text appeared in the text box. OUTSTANDING!!! Then I became overly
ambitious and tried to access «Object -> Line & Fill» at which point PageStream
5.0.5.3 froze solid. I was intending to 'stroke' the outline of the text box so
that it would be visible. Reboot needed.

BM> Two attempts to open a ready-made document failed, though. After selecting

Haven't got there yet! But I tried to open the 5.0Flyer.pgs file and that caused
PageStream to freeze solid. Reboot necessary.

I hope these advances give Deron a boost of confidence! Smile

I see the text box clearly enough once I get it open (and re something you
said in an earlier post, it is the icon in the tool box that I have used to
open it, .5.2 as well as .5.3), but the cursor to draw it is very faint
here. I use the guide lines on the rulers to find it.

Well, actually, 5.0Flyer was one of the ready-made documents I tried to
open.

Your "glyph #26" alert rings a bell. I can't remember when it was, but I
have an idea I tried to get help for it in this list. Perhaps successfully,
because it has to be at least months since I've seen it.

What about opening from a shell? Don't recall anyone claiming they could open
from the executable icon on the Workbench.
