Hi Deron,

PS> A new download, PageStream 5.0.5.4 Amiga-OS3-68k, is available that you are
PS> entitled to download from the PageStream site.

Thank you moving to version 5.0.5.4

I completed the download just a few minutes ago.

After the unpacking, the only modification I made to the 'new' PageStream5054
directory (initially empty) was to make a copy of «UserPrefs» directory from
version 5.0.3.3 and move the copy into «WorkRazzageStream5054» and then rename
the copy properly.

Made two attempts:

-1- Double click the executable icon «PageStream5» where it appears in
«WorkRazzageStream5054». The usual YELLOW appears about glyph #126, so click
that away, but withing a few seconds the mouse freezes and so does OS4.0.
Reboot.

-2- Open a shell, set the stack size to 200,000 bytes, and issue the RUN command
on «WorkRazzageStream5054». Same response! YELLOW alert followed by OS4.0
freezing up. Only difference was that the mouse disappeared entirely from the
scene.

The GR never appeared, hence no report from him. Did not run Snoopy but would
have been of no use because of the freeze.

Sorry, but thanks for the try. Perhaps others are doing better. Smile

Hello Don,

Some questions for you, and some things for you to try.

First, do you know that making a copy of your previous prefs helps?

Can you run sashimi in a shell and see what appears? I know you might
not be able to catch if it crashes, but knowing what the last few lines
are would help identify where it crashed.

With a copy of your previous prefs, edit the pref file and add these 2
lines:

DEBUG
DEBUGFILE

That should create a text file called AppDebug.txt when you run
PageStream, stored in the same places as the pref file. That should
survive a crash and help (unless it is crashing before PageStream gets
setup enough to create the folder).

Lastly, you should be able to run MemGuard under OS4. That might help
identify the problem, and prevent it from crashing.

Deron

well os4 has some inbuild functionality for that. that is the debugbuffer.
one can dump it by typing

DumpDebugBuffer

in a shell.
this also survives a warm boot after a crash.
i for myself vahe added the following lines right at top of user-startup:

; Save the current debug buffer
Run >NIL: CVery HappyumpDebugBuffer >NIL: Big_Cache:LastDebugBufferDump.txt CLEAR

this saves the debugbuffer to disk after each start and also flushes it to
prepare a clean log. *very* handy!

for the curious - the output follows.

i'll try memguard also.

Hi Deron,

PS> Hello Don,

PS> Some questions for you, and some things for you to try.

PS> First, do you know that making a copy of your previous prefs helps?

It did when I was flirting with the previous release! Sets up the MUI screen
nicely so that I am not frustrated by the overlap of the Toolbar and the
Toolbox, for example. Also, places the Edit Palette where I want it, but
granted that's a pretty thin line. Also, gives info about the fonts I will use.

So I'll dump my user prefs and we will see what happens! Hold on! Wink

-1- From the Workbench
I hide the UserPrefs then double click on the exectable icon. A message of the
form

Attempting to load PageStream5 ....

appears (something like that) but disappears after 5 seconds or so. But, OS4.0
has NOT crashed. However, I discover that a directory UserPrefs has been created
and contains two subdirectories «Dictionaries» and «Borders» but files
«PageStream5.prefs» and «PageStream5.Styles» have NOT been created.

On a second attempt, we get as far as the YELLOW alert popup and then OS4.0
freezes. Reboot.

-2- From a shell
First attempt was made with stack at size about 36.000 bytes. The shell returns
from the call after 10 seconds (or so), and shortly thereafter the YELLOW alert
appears. The alert prevents me from doing anything but click the alert away.
Immediately upon the alert disappearing, OS4.0 freezes.

Tried a second time with stack at 500,000 and received precisely the same
response. Examining directory UserPrefs I find nothing has been added.

I don't know what sashimi is so I used FIND to try and locate it. The only
things that came up was

Sys:System/Media Toolbox

Where does one go to find out how to use it? Someone else could answer this for
Deron.

PS> With a copy of your previous prefs, edit the pref file and add these 2

OK, did that.

Attempted to run Pagestream5 from the Workbench (twice) AND found that
AppDebug.txt file, which I have attached. Hmmmmm! Will the attachment get
through??? Ok, maybe it will not, so I'll simply insert it here:

Memguard! OK, I'll take a look in one of the AmiNet sites.

However, I'll send this off now in the hope that AppDebug.txt will be of use.

Sorry, no luck with PgS 5.0.5.4, either. Although I can get a little further than with the previous beta.

The last lines in the debug output read:

WINATTR_Title 10CBF0B8 Personalize (from Personalize) (11)
createreq done Personalize
Personalize #4 10CBF0B8
Personalize #5
SL_DoRequester #1

Then PgS crashes with Software Failure error #80000003 and the OS locks up completely - so I cannot provide the entire debug output.

No personalization window is opened for me.

I can see PgS has created the UserPrefs drawer, with empty Borders and Dictionaries sub-drawers. (The previous beta crashed before UserPrefs was created).

I run PgS under WinUAE/OS3.9, with a stack of 300,000, both from WB and the Shell - same result.

Regards,
Daniel

Running SnoopDOS I noticed that my PgS fails on FONTS:Softlogik.font and FONTS:Softlogik.otag. But I couldn't find ANY fonts in the package (PageStream5.0.5.4.lha, 28MB). I remember in version 4 there used to be a folder Softlogik/Fonts but not anymore in PgS 5.

Also, the ReadMe.txt says:

"AMIGA: Now includes new font MgOpen, which is a set of 16 fonts, 4 families x 4 styles. Another nice "open source" font to complement Vera!" (added in v5.0.2.10)

Where do I find all the fonts?

Regards,
Daniel

PageStream (actually, the SoftLogikApp library) will use the font if it
exists. It is not necessary, and not shipping it makes PageStream's
installation easier.

There is an lha archive of fonts available from the downloads section of
PageStream. Also, if you use Google you can probably find a more recent
version.

OK, so now we know that my installation of PgS does NOT stumble upon the font(s) and crashes elsewhere.

The last line in the SnoopDOS log shows that Texteditor.mcc was loaded successfully from FONTS:mui/. I have the latest Texteditor.mcc installed so I guess this is not the problem and PgS chokes because of something else.

What is the next component to be loaded after Texteditor.mcc?

If you want a better indication of what is going on, use Sashimi to
capture the debug output. The current Amiga betas dump a ton of debug
output as kind of bread crumb trail. It is obnoxious, but it was the
only way I could find a number of these bugs so far.

Go to Deron's website and login, then click the link «Download & Demos». When the «download & demos» windows opens, at the top you will find the entry:

PageStream Fonts v0.2 2006-02-26 4,804,199 bytes

Donwnload that an within you'll find the MyOpen (not MgOpen) family as well as other families of fonts. They are all True Type families, if I recall correctly.

I do use Sashimi, and have already posted my debug output - but I understand you cannot follow all the babble that is going on here. So to sum it up into a single post: I can get as far as

Personalize #5
SL_DoRequester #1

Then PgS crashes with Software Failure error #80000003 and the OS locks up completely.

According to SnoopDOS, the crash follows the (successfully loaded) texteditor.mcc (latest version). Therefore, I was asking which component was meant to be loaded next, to see if the crash occurs because of that (could be an old version of a class, dunno).

Regards,
Daniel

Sorry, you are correct, I don't remember everyone's responses etc Sad If
you sent me sashimi output, I've processed it as far as I am able. In
some cases I found and fixed a problem, or added extra checks, and/or
put more debug output in hopes that if I didn't fix it we will at least
get more information next time around.

This I do remember Wink I fixed a crash related to this one, so hopefully
your issue will be resolved (doesn't mean something else behind this to
trip us up...)

Hi

I try to start pgs 5.0.5.4 on Morphos.
Unfortunately it crashes on show firs window.

If it helps, You can find appdebug:
http://kaczus.republika.pl/logs/AppDebug21012010.txt
and log from morphos:
http://kaczus.republika.pl/logs/pgs_crash21022010.txt

Thanks!

This fails at the same place as other MOS users. Any chance you could
try and run with your workbench in 256 color (or less) mode?

Never thought of that. Since the problem has only appeared on MOS, then
most likely you can not test this. Never fear, next version will either
fix it or provide us more feedback. (I think it is fixed, but you never
know...)

Just one more item I want to track down before another release.
_Probably_ tomorrow but don't hold me feet to the fire (thought it might
feel good...)
