Has anyone got to the bottom of the startup error:

(PageStream4:4744): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: file gnome-vfs-uri.c:
line 459 (gnome_vfs_uri_new_private): assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed

I'm trying to start Pagestream4 on RedHat Linux 9.0

I have exported LD_LIBRARY_PATH & PATH

Regards,

Tim

Same happened to me first time I tried.

After a few seconds the login button became active and it worked from
there. I think it was checking for the ~/.PageStream4/PageStream4.prefs
(or similar).

Try running it a second time. The error only showed the first time I ran it.

Comments on this release:
If I expand the tip box at start-up (to read the tips), nearly every
time I click next tip, the box expands.
Paper size of A4 Letter may confuse people. ISO A4 and Letter are
different sizes.
The expanding pointer navigation box gets a bit irritating after a
while, so does the changing panel sizes in Preferences.
An Icon to import graphics would be nice,
and I hope you're going to add English GB to the language selection Smile .

Other than that, it's starting to look nice. Can't wait to try the final
version.

When do we get ligatures? Wink

thanks,
<Ivan.

Ivan,

I guess I was just being impatient! Wink Thanks for the help

I'm now seeing an error box upon startup, the details of which are:

Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDLSurprisedmg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDLSurprisedmg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDLSurprisedmg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0

Anyone got an idea what's causing this?

Thanks & Regards,

Tim

I'm not running CORBA at at, so I can't help very much.

Other than IDL stands for 'Interface Definition Language' - that's about
my sum knowledge of CORBA. All our enterprise applications are in Java.

I'm guessing that it's now looking for a resource, and CORBA is high up
the list of possible locators, although I'm surprised that the library
is looking for remote resources at all.

It may be that the previous error has prompted the remote lookup. Try
clearing out the old untar (and config files) and starting again.

It also sounds that CORBA is not actually fully set up on your machine,
as it can't find the configuration server.

just my ramblings, feel free to ignore.

thanks,
<Ivan.

Hi! Give it a try again. This version has a problem creating the
.PageStream4 folder in your home directory. It should still get created.
Check and see if it is there! Once it is created, this error should go away.

Fixed in the coming release (if it is the same thing that I am talking about!)

Wow. That is a first! As I understand it, some of the gtk high level app
window uses corba to handle detachable menus and such (don't ask me, I've
not gone looking through their code for this yet to figure out why they
even need to use it). CORBA is not a direct requirement of PageStream, but
it is of the gtk stuff.

Now why you are having a problem is beyond me. I'll have to go looking.
This is what I've found so far: (You might want to just copy of archive the
directory mentioned, and not just delete it. You might also want to dig
around some yourself.)

I fixed the problem by deleting the /etc/CORBA directory!

Looks likely that your gconf install is screwed somehow. Try running
gconf-sanity-check-2 (in /usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 in recent
versions, or /usr/bin in older) and see if it complains about
anything.

These issues are all related to gtk widgets desire to be as small as
possible etc. Once we get full functionality, we will try and tweak this
some. The Edit palette will require some fixed initial size that is can
grow beyond (and stay bigger). Just the troubles of trying to have a fully
font sensitive interface.

>Paper size of A4 Letter may confuse people. ISO A4 and Letter are

Hmm. I suppose that could confuse people, but it hasn't so far. Did it
confuse you? I assume you are talking about ISO A4 and US Letter are
different sizes.

For me it is less confusing that it is labeled A4 Letter, but that is
because I didn't grow up using A4 sizes.

>An Icon to import graphics would be nice,

The toolbar has that ability.

>and I hope you're going to add English GB to the language selection Smile .

Yes, we have about 12 different languages, include "British" and "American"
English variations to the spell checker and hyphenation.

When you get the text working Smile Even the version you have of PageStream
is already compiled up and supporting ligatures. It is just waiting for the
libraries to display the text. What I am most excited about the GTK2.x
Linux versions is that it is the first "OS" that has full native
Unicode/UTF-8 support. In fact, it has more support for Unicode than
PageStream (I don't have all the support for the more complex languages,
but never really had much desire to finish that code because of the failure
of the OS to perform it's part of the functionality).

Quite a lot of software shortens the paper sizes options to A4 *or*
Letter. I just thought having A4 Letter would confuse.
(especially as the printer queue was held yesterday as someone did send
a Letter paper size to a lazer loaded with A4 paper - which was only
noticed when someone else when to collect their print job, and had to
press the 'use A4 instead' option to get the jobs to run)

thanks,
<Ivan.
