Hi! Great big new upload for Linux today! While there are a couple annoying
problems still (the biggest being speed with text), I have been producing
and printing documents now! Now the trick is to figure out what doesn't
work, and what doesn't work the way it should on Linux.

Here is the list. If you have something to add, let me know!

*** Biggest New Stuff
Printing now works!!! Uses CUPS. Downloaded fonts not implemented fully
(working it out for this and PDF)
All existing Filters available except JPG. Can load old docs etc! Working
on a JPG and PNG filter using existing Linux libraries.
All effects modules included including those in Gary's Effects package.
All language modules available (except I didn't see Deutsch! May not be in
this archive)
Article Text displays and can be edited!
Special text can be inserted (Tabs, Returns, Space, etc)
Font selection in font substitution requester (Doesn't display in list
correctly, but that is a widget issue).

*** To Do / Known Bugs
Text rendering is SLOW! No caching enabled at this point.
Clipboard and DragNDrop
External scripting (Python?)
JPG & PNG Filters needed
Some requesters are not redone for new rsrc, and some requesters are redone
but screwed up.
Complex lists doesn't work right (stupid GTK...)
Line stroke (just shows single pixel line now).
Gradient and Radial fills not working right.
Text Outline not working.
Stroked only objects are hard to select.
Menu shortcuts not working.
Menu items Open Recent & Scripts not showing.
Drawing areas in requesters getting erased at times.

problems with not finding library due to:

libSoftLogikDisp.so.1 ->
/home/deron/PageStream/SoftLogik/lib/libSoftLogikDisp.so.1.0.0

I don't have a deron home directory on my system Wink

Still can't enter any text - as soon as I select the text tool and touch
a key it seg faults.
no errors reported - it just folds!

Looks an impressive list of features, unfortunately I can't seem to get
many to work at all.

I corrected badly links in 'SoftLogik/lib'. This was enough for working
but not for printing. When I try to print shows bug requester from Gnome.

Saving and reloading of documents works properly.
Typying of polish characters is not possible.
Saving of preferences not work.

Deron,

It might be a good idea to know what distribution of Linux you are
programming in or testing on yourself. I mention this because it might
be easier to track down problems others are having when installing and
testing on their machines. If you are yourself testing on many
different distros, which I suspect is not the case, then you may already
be aware of the bugs.

Because of several problems with RH, MDK and Slackware, that I am aware
of presently, PgS could be having problems that are not actually PgS
problems! Of course, if you are programming to one of the above
distros, then you may be programming around the bugs also, thus creating
problems folks with other distros are seeing.

Just a thought to help those that decided to help you beta test PgS for
Linux. If everybody is having trouble not only installing, but running
PgS as well, it would seem logical to run down as many bugs as possible,
before you again announce that PgS is ready.

I Shoot! I always make new links before creating the archive. But of
course, not this time...

Does anyone need help with this, or are we ok for now?

Figures, I took a lot of the debug info out this time to make the download
smaller for everyone. I presume when you click on the page you get a
flashing cursor? Does the edit palette show a font selected in it?

Hi,

I am running Mandrake 9.0 on my machine, and the only bugs I have worked
around so far are my own Smile

Previous releases have seen improvments in problems that others have had
(for example, installation), but it has been hard in the past to know if
the problem was PageStream, how PageStream interacts with the system, or
the system. Now I am pretty sure anything that is not on my system is the
later two (most likely the way PageStream interacts with the system).

Anyway, I will be cleaning up the PageStream resource files in the next few
weeks and working on the speed issue. Otherwise, I will be helping find and
fix the various bugs. If folks will report what problems they have, we can
go from there!

Haven't quite gotten this far along yet.

Yep! It (eventually) opens one of my main documents! Cool! (Okay, haven't
checked all filters yet, just the document one)

Display? Check
Edit? Dunno, see below where the save as hangs for a year and a day

I don't think this is working correctly. Some of the list display is obviously
incorrect (like double listing of fonts) and it seems to prefer display fonts
as bold, but it doesn't remember selections in the same session. E.g., open a
document and the requestor appears. Cour-Normal is pre-selected to convert to
Courier New. So far so good. I have installed Roar so I select to convert
Roar-Normal to Roar Regular and check the box to remember.

I click back on Cour-Normal and the destination font is unselected. Click back
to Roar-Normal and the remember box is unchecked.

Is this what is slowing down the whole application? Opening a (admittedly
fair-sized) document takes minutes. When I opened a save as requestor the
frame of the window appeared immediately, but I haven't been able to save
yet. The initial open file requestor was not this bad... My system is
mid-spec at 512MB RAM and 1.667GHz AthlonXP. Heck, running PgS in UAE is
faster ;^)

Matter of fact, having PgS running is making it difficult to compose this
email. Most of the time the system is fine, but then at times it will crawl
and become unresponsive.

For what its worth: SuSE 8.2, KDE 3.1, home directories mounted via NFS.

Yo Tim,

I'm asking these questions on this list because there may be other poor
SuSE 8.2 KDE 3.1 souls as muddled as I.

I DLed new PgS version today...after deleting old version (it was so
bad) ...I extracted it to /home/gracia/PgS. I am using the same
StartupPgS file I copied from you which worked with old version...but
not with this new one. It looks like all the files are in the same
place as the earlier ver.

Now, I read here of people actually using PgS...making a text box and
entering text & even printing!! As I wrote before I can't accomplish
even that. I can't find the fonts & I can't find the text tool; I can
make lines & basic shapes. In other words, my setup is not really
working. Any help gratefully accepted...I would really like to use PgS
with Linux. When my Amiga died, it was the windoze ver. that saved me.

One way to test this is to try opening a blank document and leave it blank
(or just draw a simple box or something like that). I would be curious if a
simple document like that would cause other applications to slow down for you.

I can't make this version of PGS work at all! It won't even start up!
The former version did work ... well, it was not usable - but it did
start up.

Is there something special I have to do? I have unpacked the archive on
top of the old one - did not work. Then I unpacked it to an empty
directory named the same as the old one - still it do not work at all.

The new archive is about 5Mb smaller than the old.

I'm running Mandrake 9.1

Yes, if I select the font tool and click or drag a box, I get the
flashing cursor. The edit palette shows font: sans, style: no style.

If I select the column tool (I think! - which I can't edit) and then
click inside with the font tool I get a flashing cursor. As soon as I
type anything it seg faults.

The selector icons on the tool bar only show a 10x4 (approx) pixel line
when you right click. You've got to select a line for it to update the
icon. (This is the only way to find out what you've selected, as there
are no popups to let you know what the icons are for.)

I can draw basic graphic shapes and fill them, and can place images
(using the file -> place graphic menu item). TIFF and GIF work OK, but
it doesn't recognise PNG format - which I tend to use for everything
these days.

If the angle bracket (icon at bottom) is for importing images (or is it
a ruler?), I can't use that as it seg faults as soon as I click it. If
it's not for importing images, can we have one on the tool bar?

thanks,
<Ivan.

There are bad symlinks in the PgS/SoftLogik/lib directory. all the *.1 links
point to the *.1.0.0 libs via an absolute reference on Deron's hard drive.
All I did was to delete them and recreate the symlinks while in the that
directory, e.g.,

ln -s libSoftLogikApp.so.1.0.0 libSoftLogikApp.so.1

This morning the save as requestor was still hung so I killed PgS. Has anyone
else had problems doing Save As?

Deron slipped up with the symlinks in the SoftLogik/lib directory and they are
broken. Delete them and remake them. E.g., cd to that directory and

rm libSoftLogikApp.so.1
ln -s libSoftLogikApp.so.1.0.0 libSoftLogikApp.so.1
rm libSoftLogikDisp.so.1
ln -s libSoftLogikDisp.so.1.0.0libSoftLogikDisp.so.1

rm libSoftLogikRsrc.so.1
ln -s libSoftLogikRsrc.so.1.0.0 libSoftLogikRsrc.so.1

I could get that working (just saving filled graphics), and saving
everything with the .pagestream extension.

Is there a recognized file extension (not that we need one, of course)?
But it is helpful to identify which application will/can open the file.

Hi, we use .pgs on the PC, so I would suggest that if you wanted to pick
something.

OK, I'll see if I can think of anything that would cause it. I may have to
give you a debug version so you can run it in gdb and see what happens.
(actually, you can do it now, just won't give you any kind of useful
information).

Ah, I assume you mean the edit palette? The palette at the bottom of the
screen? And you need a tool tip for the icon that tells you want kind of

JPG and PNG are not included in this release. We have not supported PNG on
the other platforms (just not very popular outside of the Linux world) but
are adding support. The JPG I am just trying to rework to use existing
tools. Will probably do the same for TIFF if I get this going.

I assume you mean in the toolbox at the left (by default). The angle
bracket is the border tool for drawing border objects. To place a graphic,
you choose Place Graphic from the menu. If you want to drag paste where it
should go, you can do that using Place Graphic as well. You can assign a
toolbar (that is the bar of icons across the top of the window) to initiate
a paste graphic. We also have a script on the Amiga that lets you draw a
box that then calls up a file selector to put a graphic in the box, but of
course the proportions of the box and the graphic would rarely match!

Did I misunderstand?

OK, do you have CUPS installed? (must) Do you have a printer selected in CUPS?

OK, I'll look into it. I know we still do not support the Input Methods,
that may be the problem. I know it GTK2.0 they changed the way extended
characters get handled.

Hmm. Works ok here. What did you try and save?

Hi,

Quick observations:

Speed is a serious problem. As it permeates all usage of the program perhaps
it is a busy-wait spinner?

Print Setup window opened from Print requestor would not close after choosing
new PPD and saving changes.

Ignores/overrides duplex settings in PPD and CUPS (everything else printed
comes out duplex, the printer is set to print duplex, I modified the PPD
(HPLJ2300D) to force duplex and it still prints single-sided).

In the file save requestor the filename (which was using the default from the
document title) had the spaces escaped html style, e.g., %20.

Default path for file backup in prefs is Documents\Backups -- this is escaped
to %5C, but is wrong in any case: it should be Documents/Backups.

File requestors in Preferences (e.g., to set backup path, or in the paths
section) seem to lockup PgS.

When viewing a document the scroll bar scroll the ruler, not the page.

More verbose (and meandering) commentary at end.

I created a new document and imported a text file. Although I didn't time it,
it took at least three minutes to import which seems excessive for a 27KB
file. I switched to this workspace to update the email and switched back and
the application had erased everything but a couple of the text related fields
in the edit palette (e.g., 12pt type, etc.). It showed the black highlight of
the text, but not the text. Switched again and it isn't even showing any of
that. Doesn't respond to mouseclicks although it does seem to be saving them
up for when it gets around to it.

If switching out is enough to lose the program interface it makes it hard to
work with...

Opening any requestor seems to be enough to make the program unresponsive and
allow "erasing" of the program window contents by dragging a window across
it. For example, I stayed in the workspace long enough to get the PgS back
and selected the print requestor. The print setup requestor opens up empty
and everything becomes unresponsive as I drag the print setup requestor and
it erases the PgS window to the uniform background color.

I have also noticed that PgS seems to push CPU usage through the roof. With
PgS running it is constantly pegging out with only occasional fluctuation
down to 95% or so for an instant. This is regardless of the activity or lack
thereof. Closing PgS and rerunning it "fixed" the problem.

In the file save requestor the filename (which was using the default from the
document title) had the spaces escaped html style, e.g., %20.

The menus are painfully slow as well, waiting for one to finally draw and then
realizing what you want is in a different menu and waiting for it to draw and
then waiting for the submenu to draw.

The overall slowness is such a problem I wonder if there isn't something in
the code like a busy-wait.

I also saw odd behavior with the edit palette (e.g., selecting paragraph
style).

When viewing a document the vertical scroll bar scrolls the ruler, not the
page.

May be worth giving a second option of a debug version. I don't mind
(I'm using the university's 80GB/sec line), but anyone on a dialup would
probably want as small a download as possible.

No, the toolbar to the left.

It would help, as I can't see any icons on the fly-out, just a thick
black line where each icon should be (I assume there should be icons)

OK, that's good. PNG gets used for everthing these days.

Unfortunately, it never puts it at the left. It puts it in the centre,
behind the application page, so I then have to minimise the page, drag
the toolbox to the left and re-expand the page.

The angle

I can't get to the toolbar commands options in preferences as the column
is about 20 pixels wide, and as they're centered most of the viewable
area is white space.

We also have a script on the Amiga that lets you draw a

No, that's right.

Apart from not being able to enter any text, the main issue (for me)
tends to be the sizing and placing of the components. There are quite a
few components that don't fit inside the component box, or are so small
they're just thick lines. Resizing sometimes helps, but rarely.
Others resize automatically (which can get distracting, especially with
the cursor position box).

thanks for your help,
keep up the good work,
<Ivan.

Yes, it is installed and anothers programs works. I use KDE, but gnome 2
is installed and worked too. My Linux distribution is Debian.

I changed max view scale and then pressed "Save" widget. In next start
of PgS I must reply this.

I am going to guess that you tried to enter a number bigger than 3000%?
That would be the maximum we support, so not really a fair test of if
things saved or not. The value is automatically clamped to the maximum
(3000%) so no error is generated (which if anything would be the bug, but a
pretty low level one Smile
