Yo gang,

After a few reinstalled I scared the PgS gremlins away (must be gremlins
since I did the same thing that didn't work before) & got a slightly
better PgS ver. to boot up. I can write with a default font...(can't
find any other fonts); changed it's size, set my prefs & crashed PgS
trying the border tool ;^). Not complaining...it's a start. Nice to see
my fav DTP...at least I have an idea how the program works.

Thanks y'al again for the help...always learn a lot when things don't
work. Any trick to finding the fonts?

IIRC you are using SuSE 8.2. To add fonts use the Control Center, go to the
System Administration section and select Font Installer. Its simple to just
start adding TrueType and Type1 fonts. These then show up for PgS.

Yo Tim,

I have at least 486 fonts installed, and more waiting in the wings,
which are seen by all my program but PgS.

You should be able to change the font using the popup in the edit palette.

Yea. I forgot that I still needed to fix the border tool.

Thanks...worked. Didn't see it,..should have known better after 8 yrs
using PgS.

I imported a .tif black line drawing of my cat on a white background, it
was reversed! looked great, but wasn't what it should have been.

Thanks again...

Were those fonts installed with the control center font manager? What kind of
fonts are they (type1, truetype)?

SySE 8.2 has a TTF dir already installed I haven't added any to it
....yet

CUPS printing

I added the new PT1 fonts with a new dir added to fonts dir & running
the commands...believe me, it was correct...ALL my programs see & print
them....even PgS SEES & uses them on screen; it's just that the print
config didn't work yesterday...today it at least took the info &
closed when I hit <use> BUT I got this error when I tried to print:

PT1 fonts? Type1? Anyway, exactly what do you mean by "the print config didn't
work"? Is there a PPD set in the PgS printer configuration? What kind of
printer and how is it connected? (network, local?)

Just trying to suggest things because it does work here... though I need to
get Times Roman installed...

Yo Tim,

Sorry if I sound snarky, but this is driving me nuts. I know you're
trying to help & you have, at least I boot via the StartPgS shell icon.

> PT1 fonts? Type1?

yes, type1

Anyway, exactly what do you mean by "the print
> config didn't work"? Is there a PPD set in the PgS printer
> configuration? What kind of printer and how is it connected?
> (network, local?)

HP 4m local

That's just what I mean...the print setup does not work...the top 2
things <paper> & <options>appear not to be finished. I set the ppd, &
hit <use>; then I hit print & I get:

>Application "PageStream4" (process 3510) has crashed
>due to a fatal error.
>(Segmentation fault)

> Just trying to suggest things because it does work here..

I know..I am having a similar problem with scribus...it won't print a
page with any graphics on it works fine with everyone else including my
vendor who sent me the rpm. As i said before all my other programs see
& print with no problem. I could probably print to file & print from
that.

I didn't had a problem with gimp in 8.1, haven't tried to print with new
beta or 8.2; will try it tomorrow.

Does the new font menu work better for you? My problems is I already have
to many fonts, and my list is just a standard installation list (mostly
junk fonts).

How would people feel about sub/submenus for font families? Like

Font->Helvetica->Normal
->Bold
->Oblique
->BoldOblique
->Times->Roman
->Italics

I agree with the submenu part, Deron. I realize there are many fonts
available and I also think folks get carried away with too many on their
systems when they only use a few of those. Any way as you suggest to
reduce the length of display would be an excellent idea then.

The Scribus program I am working with presently opens a window for the
fonts with a drop down scrollable window showing the fonts, which seems
to work very nicely too. Each font/fontname is shown as you scroll thru
the fonts without submenus.

That looks very good to me. I use quite a few 'specialized' fonts and
sometimes I have a hard time getting the correct one. One thing that
would help my font selection would be to have a further submenu
with a sample of a few of the characters of that font.

I think sub/submenus will be quite annoying because you'll always have
to browse through the whole structure of the menu (selectable fonts will
only be on the third level).

I'd suggest two things:

- Two checkboxes in the prefs window where you can select whether
subfamilies or font styles (are bold, oblique, ... called styles? in
german I guess we call them "Schriftschnitt") are displayed in the popup
menu of the edit palette. Maybe it would make sense to be able to choose
which fonts will appear in this menu.

- An additional font-selector window that may always stay open. With a
foldable tree-like structure it would be possible to display huge
amounts of fonts without confusion. Additionally it should be possible
to create userdefined folders inside this tree and to sort fonts into them.
Another nice feature would be something like drag&drop font changing. So
you would pick a font from the font-tree and drop it onto your document.
A font preview area in this window would be useful too - together with a
checkbox that enables/disables preview and hides the preview area when
disabled.

Gunther

PS: PageStream4.1f doesn't like to run on my RH9 system. I always get
some "unable to create display handle"-message after the first window
appeared for a microsecond. Any ideas?

I've just unpacked pagestream41f.tar.gz, set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH as
usual, but could not run it. I get the splash screen for a fraction of a
second, then
error: could not create display handle.

using gdb just gives the same message, no more.

Tried pagestream41e.tar.gz just to make sure nothing on my system had
changed. Still runs until I try to enter any text, then seg faults.

[Using Debian Sid]

I'm using Debian (sarge), and it's working.

The 2 entries in my .bashrc are;

export PATH=$PATH:/opt/PagesStream/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/opt/PagesStream/SoftLogik/lib/

my path and LD_LIBRARY_PATH are OK, I was wondering what's changed
between releases e and f.

e would at least open and display something, f can't even get that far.

Did you add "f" to "e"?

"f" is only the additions Deron updated.

Hi.

Did you decompress the f archive _over_ the previous installation (or at
least a copy of it)?

I can't think of anything that would have changed between the two that
would give you this much trouble.

The solution is very easy:

PageStream4.1f only seems to work together with PageStream4.1e. I've
made the mistake to update to version "f" without updating to "e" first.
The old installation (version "d"?) has to be removed and everything
works well.

thanks for that. I had deleted the 'e' directory first.

At least I've got some debug data now.
As follows:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 16384 (LWP 8533)]
0x40031a16 in createfontdata (dh=0x0, fe=0x40da5008, style=0)
at ../src/font.c:873
873 ../src/font.c: No such file or directory.
in ../src/font.c

If I create a text box, and try to insert any text it seg faults.
If I try to change the font, it always reverts to Sans as soon as I
click inside the text box.

thanks,
<Ivan.

I think this is a Pagestream "feature" I seem to remember the same quirk
in Pagestream2.2 on the Amiga. If you DoNot click on the text box after
setting the font attributes then PgS will use the font you have
selected.

I really hate this " feature" although not having to click on the text
box is useful and a potential step saver, losing your font selection
just because you've clicked on the object you want it to apply to seems
counter intuitive. (kind of like RPN calculators).

Another note, some people claim to have printed and produced documents
w/ the current version, I've not had this success yet (SuSE 8.1,
xfree86 4.2.0, kde 3.1.3).

The most frequent cause of a segfault for me has been selecting text and
changing the font attributes. Usually I can get away with changing the
attributes once or twice but I get segfaults if I change them any more
than that. (so far I haven't used the prog for more than 5 minutes
w/out a segfault)

One last note, Is there a way to get the windows to open in the same
place each time the program is run?

See ya

ps, thanks to Deron for your efforts with the linux version.

The problem now is, when I select the Text Tool the default font is
blank, and as soon as I select a font it reverts back to blank. It will
only let me select a font once I have clicked on the workspace/page.

If I don't then click back on the page, any text I enter is placed in
the font input/textbox (as this has focus at the moment - along with the
edit dialog).

In order to give the focus back to the workspace/page I have to either
click somewhere within the frame or on the frame border/title bar.

Unfortunatley it does not make any difference; as soon as I hit any key
it still segfaults. Looks like a font problem, not a display problem.
But using seperate dialogs with individual focus may be complicating
matters.

gdb ouput:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
