Hi all,

Interesting news today in the eDTP email. As many of us here are Amiga
leftovers for PgS, the news of a PPC version of PgS was surprising news.
I have a couple of questions about this if Deron or someone can answer
them.

1) Is this PPC PgS going to be usable on any PPC platforms, no matter
what the OS? I mention this because of MorphOS, which is out already
and very usable, but AmigaOS4 is not.

2) Will you continue with the version numbering 4.x on this or renumber
it as an early stage of development as Linux should have been as well?
Showing it as say, a version 0.5 or something would better reflect the
stage of use it is really in, rather than 4.x which gives the wrong
impression of a fully usable mature program.

3) Is the PPC version going to be a full PPC port or part 68k as well?

4) Why announce it at this time when there is no AmigaOS4, possibly
will never be, if it is only going to work on AOS4?

Lots of unanswered questions about this announcement and I am sure there
will be several others posted from interested parties. Some have
already shown up on Amiga.Org site. As one person mentioned there:
" "released" means finished and ready use and ship to customers"

Is the PPC version of PgS completed and usable and ready to ship yet? I
know this sounds like I am accusing you guys of bogus claims and
misleading ads, but how can we not get that impression after seeing the
"release" of the Linux version?

Patrick

Not sure why it is surprising. I still support the Amiga. Unless I was just
going to milk the market, I need to continue to support it!

No, it will work only for Amiga OS4 PPC (unless MorphOS is emulating that
as well, which I guess it could. Don't know what plans they have.) There is
nothing that says there can't be a MorphOS PPC compiled version of
PageStream. Just that Amiga, Inc. has chosen to include me in future
developments, and help me develop for it. I'm sure in the future something
similar will be worked out for MorphOS considering the interested emails
and phone calls I have received today while I was gone Smile

It will be 4.1. While it may be the first release of the libraries, it is
not the first release of PageStream (or the language modules, effects, etc
etc etc). The 4.1 clearly outlines the functionality of PageStream.

>3) Is the PPC version going to be a full PPC port or part 68k as well?

Full. It also contains OS4 specific support. The extend of that may change
in time as OS4 and beyond matures, but that is of course looking past the
crystal ball Smile

>4) Why announce it at this time when there is no AmigaOS4, possibly

Wow, I am getting the picture you are an OS4 naysayer. I guess I'm a little
closer to it and have faith in it. I guess I can't win. Usually we don't
start coding for new OS releases until after it has been out for a while.
Then people want to know why we are not more advanced. Now you want to know
why we are so advanced. I guess I'll just continue to do what I think is
best Smile

What is there to know? OS4 has been publicly demonstrated in a number of
countries across the world, and is a darn nice OS already!

?? It is of course a bit of a fine line when the product you are supporting
is not widely available. Luckily the rest of the folks are glad to know
where we stand. We support the future of the Amiga. I don't see where that
is a problem.

Hmm. I had to go back and read the front page of our web site to try and
figure out what your beef is, and I still don't get it. Neither the Linux
version nor the PPC version are listed as "final", "complete" or even
"released" (which is a pretty vague term. I can make an pen and paper
drawing of a PageStream8.0 screen design and "release" it to the public.
That doesn't make PageStream8.0 "done".)

Is PageStream AmigaOS4PPC (or whatever you want to call it), complete? No.
Run? Yes. When will it be "complete"? Probably the day after OS4 PPC is
"complete". But I thought that was pretty clear from the news.

Well, back on topic for this list, I just spent the day fixing the rest of
the Linux requesters. Hopefully I got them all cleaned up.
