What I hear is that you need to purchase textfx in order to do text on
a curve? This is really a joke right? I just downloaded the demo for
linux and have not been able to put text on a curve. Am I doing
something wrong? Everything else seems to work well so far.

Thanks

TextFX used to be a separate add-on for PageStream, but is now part of
PageStreamPro. No joke, it is required to have PageStreamPro to convert text
to curves. It is not, strictly speaking, required to put text on a curve --
there was a script for the Amiga version that would take text, put each
character in its own frameless text object, and rotate as necessary to form a
spiral. I don't remember off the top of my head if this script has been
ported to Python (in which case it would be available for all platforms where
Python is support, such as linux and windows).

Yes I remember doing it on the Amiga version. I think that I also did
it in the Win version as well. What is so different about the Pro
version? (Besides costing more money?)

Us college students are on a budget and cannot afford to spend alot
for a publishing program that is only used for a Monthly newsletter.

I am using another dtp program on linux that just rocks. I figured
that since I have supported (Softlogik) in the past I might want to
see what they are doing in the linux world.

Thank you

The Pro version has all the extras: Gary's Effects, TextFX, etc. I'm not sure
of the exact list, but this is available on the website. It also has new
capabilities PgS did not have before, such as a PDF document (not just text)
import filter.

I understand that. For most purposes the Pro version is not necessary. For
basic documents you don't need to convert text to curves, etc. or import PDFs
for editing.

The only other DTP program I'm aware of on linux is Scribus. I'm sure that,
eventually, it will overtake PageStream -- but in the meantime it has such
limited functionality I can't get any use out of it.

However, if it, or any other application, does what you need then use it. I'm
sure Deron appreciates your continued support and I'm certainly not meaning
to say not to use PageStream -- but use the tool that is most appropriate.

As a note, I checked the scripts I have installed for PageStream 5.
CurveText.py will fit text to an arbitrary path and WarpText.py will do the
same with distortion: both require TextFX (PageStreamPro). I remember using
the script I mentioned on the Amiga before I got TextFX, but I don't recall
the name. By appearances that script hasn't been converted to Python yet. If
I had it before I should still have it (that's what large hard drives are
for ;^) and if I can remember to do so will convert it.
