After having finally received access to PageStream4 for Windows, I note the
following:

Machine: PIII, Windows98 SE, 192MB RAM
Printers: LPT1: HP LaserJet 4L (default)
LPT2: Canon BJC-6000, driver v6.31

1) Printing to HP LaserJet 4L on LPT1 produces blank pages. References to
printing below are to BJC-6000 on LPT2.

2) Dual sided/facing pages: Crashes after printing "Range #,#" (two page
range)

3) Dual sided/facing pages: Won't print RH Masterpage objects when
printing "Range #" (one page range). Does not occur using Single Sided.

4) Prints far more reliably when Background Printing (in Page Layout in
Canon driver) turned off, otherwise bitmaps often missing from print
or Out of Memory spooling errors occur.

5) Consistently prints offset approx +0.25cm X-axis and +0.2cm Y-axis (wish
Win
version had Amiga version's offset controls). There is currently no work
around for this without turning off Double-Sided/Facing Pages and moving
guides/objects (which is not suitable for current project).

6) Many Prefs settings are not saved.

It is good to see that a Windows application CAN be fast and efficient
(400MB Publisher project is only 60MB in PGS4). However this is tempered by
my urgent need to be able to align the print output correctly. With this
fixed, I could actually produce my catalogue in PGS as it is, and patiently
await the refinements. Any chance?

Regards,

Mark

Hi There!

My BJC6500 prints too small (80%) and offset.
If I ask for a 125% printout to compensate; and print in A3 landscape; the
boxes I put round the print, only print out on the left-hand half of the
page, and the print is
turned on its side. It only does this if I increase the printout size.

Anything that I urgently need to print, I do using the 'save as PDF' option
and then printout using Acrobat reader. I don't always get the text style
that I pick, but at least I get a full-size and usable result.

The fill patterns do not work for me. I just get solid colours.

I am looking forward to the next version which I hope will at least let us
printout our efforts.

Keep at it Deron, old friend.
I'm 75 yrs old this year and I would like to have a usable version before I
go to that great DTP house in the sky.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steven
Not being able to print with my HP Laserjet 4L I tried your
suggested solution.
I had no success at all trying to print with Acrobat Reader 4
(everything was illegal). I searched round and found an old program that
had Acrobat Reader 2.1 with it and tried that. It works most of the
time.
I can pass files both ways between PgsAmiga (on the emulator) and
PgsWindows without any problems. I converted one or two of my favorite
Pgs fonts to TTF and use them as TTF on both programs (had to adjust the
UPMs to get the font sizes to match between programs). I find PDF export
crashes every time if there is anything created with PGSAmiga included
in the page that I want to Export from PgsWin. and some fonts always get
changed to a very plain helvetica type font when I read or print them
with Acrobat.

My experience is similar to Graeme's. Everything I've printed to
date to the 4L with the latest PgS - text or graphics - has
produced blank pages. Printing to Acrobat Distiller or using
PgS's Save as PDF works, but one essential bit of text comes out
unusable: Bookman Old Style Bold reversed in white out of a
black background comes out as a spindly serif font with bad
metrics (letters either crowded or far apart, and so thin as to
be almost invisible), similar to Generic in Amiga PgS. This is
true whether I use a reverse font style or change the fill to
white in the font menu. The PDF files print just as they look
onscreen. So far, the Acrobat workaround seems to work OK except
for the above problem.

Could you be more specific? I'm not aware of any prefs _not_saving!
(actually, that is not entirely true. Custom text fills are not saved, but
that is more a known limitation)

Wow! Quite the difference. Are the documents the same otherwise? I guess
Publisher doesn't compress it's bitmaps?

I'm working on getting it fixed for all printer drivers. Have you checked
to see is a more recent printer driver for your printer?

I've been busy with the "business" and programming. Little behind on my mail...

I have made the following changes in the Preferences module, and found the
previous settings reinstated on later review:

1) GENERAL: AutoBackup - turned it off, found turned on again
2) DRAWING: Double-Click/Do - Changed to "Information", reverts back to
default "Line & Fill"
3) I believe you have now stated that GENERAL: 3D Interface and Underscore
Shortcuts are redundant

Both the documents (as identical as possible given slight differences like
no chapters in Publisher) are full of graphics ranging from 1MB to 16MB in
size and are LINKED in all cases, no embedding. It appears that Publisher
saves a full 24-bit RGB version of the file inside the document regardless
of LINKING being used.

The latest drivers are being used, and I have no problems printing from
either printer (HP LJ4L and Canon BJC-6000) in any application other than
PageStream. LJ4L produces blank pages, BJC-6000 produces pages offset by a
few mm on vertical and horizontal axes in Portrait mode, and offset by
several cm in Landscape mode. Double sided/facing pages/RH pages (portrait)
also usually print without Masterpage objects.

I have delayed printing my catalogue until now because the prospect of
printing in Publisher with different page numbering (no chapters) and the
difficulty in making the output of the two programs identical is daunting. I
would also prefer not to double-handle the project (the catalogue is
intended to be updated twice-yearly for which PGS's chapter/numbering is
extremely useful). Also, since each catalogue will cost about $AU15 in print
costs alone I am trying to avoid a double print run, but this is starting to
look inevitable given the delay in getting printing working.

Mark

Apologies for replying to myself, just some additions/corrections...

The settings appear to be saved, but not always loaded at run-time.

Windows Output from printing (current) PAGE when current page is RH
double-sided, facing or not:

If I do not reset the BJC-6000 driver (re-define print quality/type
settings) for each page, the print is offset by many cm on both axes, with
Masterpage objects missing. When driver reset, printing is correct except
for small offsets on both axes mentioned above.

Mark
