Hi Deron

Good news: PGS 4.0d Prefs no longer crashes the application when
I'm clicking on "Save"....
Now PGS crashes when I'm just trying to open the prefs!

System: AMD Athlon 600, Win98 SE, 128 MB RAM

This is _way_ to strange. I didn't do a darn thing with prefs!

I tried to:

A)
* Start PGS
* Click on "Prefs"-Button in the Navigator -> Crash!

B)
* Start PGS
* Select "Preferences..." from the menu -> Crash!

C)
* Start PGS
* Click on "New" on the Navigator
* Select "Preferences..." from the menu -> Crash!

As far as I understand you use a common code-base for PGS and system
specific "frameworks" to adapt it to the different platforms.
I assume the problem could be in the framework for Windows (as the
crashes seem to be focused on systems with cpu's from AMD and Amiga
and Mac don't show this problem). Maybe a change in the windows-
specific code (to enhance printing or whatever) has some effects on
opening the prefs-dialog too - even without changing anything in
the prefs itself.

Right now I tried two other things:

D)
* Start PGS
* Click on "Open" in the Navigator, load a document
* Save the document
* Select "Preferences..." from the menu -> Prefs-dialog opens!
* Select "Use" or "Save" or "Cancel" in Prefs -> Crash

E)
* Start PGS
* Click on "Open" in the Navigator, load a document
* Select "Preferences..." from the menu -> Prefs-dialog opens!
* Select "Use" or "Save" or "Cancel" in Prefs -> Crash

I tried this because I thought the crashes could somehow be related
to loading files - as when the prefs are opened in A) to C),
pagestream4.ini was loaded before (when PGS was started).
A crash in "Save to PDF" lead me to this trail too: When I'm loading
a document and then try to "Save to PDF", PGS crashes each time.
When I'm loading a document, do some minor change (move a textbox),
save the document and then try to "Save to PDF", it works (mostly).
Both the PDF and the Prefs crashes occur *before* PGS has a chance to
display the according dialog box.

Other Crashes??

F)
* Start PGS
* Click on "Quit" in the Navigator -> Crash!

Norton CrashGaurd tells me that most of the crashes are related to
(or happen in?) module MSVCRT.DLL (sometimes module pagestream4.exe
is reported).

Hope this helps....

Perhaps with the newer AMD chips, Duron, Athlon, etc. But I've been
trying it on an IBM Aptiva with an AMD K6II 350 at home, and on my
office machine with an AMD K6II 500. Neither has the kind of problems
described by some of the other AMD users here. 192 megs and 128 megs of
RAM respectively.

Maybe it has nothing to do with the cpu at all... I just got the
impression that most users reporting crashes in Prefs (and other
functions...) said they had AMD processors (including K6-II).

Could anyone experiencing crash-problems provide the cornerstones
of the system he's using? Maybe people without crashes too so we
can see similarities?

My system:
AMD Athlon 600, 128MB RAM, Win98 SE (German), PGS4.0d.
Lots of reproducable crashes.

Anyone else?

Roland

Could people with the crash problem using prefs review the sequence of steps
that leads to the crash? I just made some minor changes in prefs and saved
them without a crash. This is on a Fujitsu LifeBook, with an AMD-K6 3D 450
MHz. I don't believe I've had crash problems associated with my AMD-K6 500
MHz in the mini-tower at home.
Both machines have 128 Meg of RAM.

Read message 329, there I reported what I did after installing
PGS 4.0c. For 4.0d I just copied the pagestream4.ini from 4.0c so I
didn't have to enter everything again...

Which OS are you running on these machines?

Windows 98 SE on the LifeBook, and Windows 2000 on the mini-tower.
