Hi all,

I'm kinda new to this list, but searched the group for anyone having
similar problems with the latest beta, and the search came up with
nothing, so here comes my "little problem": The Beta 5.0.4.3 refuses
to start on my windows home premium. The splash screen comes up, but
as soon as Pagestream starts to display the pagestream navigator,
windows tells me it has stopped executing the program, and throws me
back to the desktop. Since I found no such problems listed here, it
must be either me or windows vista, my guess would be it's vista.
Funny thing is, 5.0.3.4 works correctly, as does 5.0.2.10, so it must
be something in the latest beta, that doesn't agree with windows
vista!

Anyway, been playing with pagestream for a couple of hours now, and I
must say, I'm very happy to be back again. Will continue to use the
5.0.3.4 beta, but if I need to (in order to help find out what the
problem is between me, vista and 5.0.4.3) I would of course re-
download the latest beta.

greetings,

Dirk

Not many people use Vista and PGS...
Most of them use older Windows versions (and PGS of course).
Maybe you are the only one who is using the latest PGS and Vista.

Make sure you install the program to your root C: Drive. It doesn't like
to be in a place with a long file name. I think the limit is 40 characters?

I recently switched to Windows Vista. PgS 5.9.4.3 Pro installed and ran
OK but couldn't find any fonts; no type displayed in new or old
documents. I used preferences to point to the system fonts (in
c:\windows\fonts, same as earlier versions of Windows), and now it
crashes every time I open an old document or add text to an empty
document. (Deron, see crash info below.) I removed the font setting
from Preferences but it still crashes.

Regarding Peter's suggestion about installing PageStream to the root C:
directory, it's running from c:\Program Files\PageStream\ on my PC.

Deron, here's the crash info:

Hi Peter (and all others)

thanks for the tip. Why didn't I think to try this? Just tried your
suggestion, and yes, it works now. The font problem Bill describes in
another answer to my problem, is a problem I also have, and reported to
Deron in a private mail. The problem is, Arial is selected in the fonts as
default, but is not available on vista (can't remember if it was in the
ancient systems like xp). If you change the font to something that does
exist in Vista (like Arial Regular) before typing anything, the program
doesn't crash. This is, if I understand Deron correctly, NOT the way
Pagestream is supposed to work, and he will be looking in to it.

Didn't try loading any old Pagestream docs in this new beta, mainly because
I haven't found my backups from loooong ago yet, but my guess is I would
have the same problems if I would try to load them.

Anyway, the helpfull answers of you all on and of this list, and the joy of
using Pagestream again, make me real happy to be back again.

Dirk

Hi Bill,

Dirk had noticed a similar problem and tracked it down to using Arial
(the default font) when Arial is not available. Any chance you can try
and chance your default font (prefs->type) and give it another try and
see if that was your problem as well?

For everyone else, I am very near to releasing a new beta for 5.0.4
Windows/Linux/Mac. Today I have company coming over and helping backfill
the house (winter is coming and I need to keep the wind from getting
under the crawlspace!), but I'll be back at it tomorrow. We were
supposed to do this Saturday but fall rains canceled.

I still have to paint my office, and then I can get my desktop computers
setup. Thanks for the feedback, and for those who have posted bugs in
the new bug database a great big thanks!

Here are my results so far, including partial success:

1. I did File>Preferences>Type>Attributes. The font drop-down had only
two entries: Arial and <Mixed>. I clicked the double arrow to the
right of the drop-down (to open a font selection dialog, I hoped).
PageStream crashed. After a reboot I tried again with the same result.
Here's the crash report; note that this time the fault is in the main
executable not the DLL I reported yesterday:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: PageStream5Pro.exe
Application Version: 0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 46e03af3
Fault Module Name: PageStream5Pro.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 46e03af3
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 001dae9b
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: d613
Additional Information 2: 9611e89757915556a1baa661107dbdf4
Additional Information 3: 8c46
Additional Information 4: 646014ae77fc0514fdbd287981bcda18

2. In the Type dialog I deleted all the type attribute information,
saved, closed and reopened File>Preferences>Type. Arial and all the
other attributes had come back. Nothing accomplished.

3. I changed File>System Preferences>Fonts first to add
c:\Windows\Fonts as a font directory. Then I went to
File>Preferences>Type>Attributes and all my fonts were listed - good! I
changed the default font to Book Antiqua Regular, the main font for some
of my PgS newsletters. I opened a new document and clicked with the
type tool: The edit palette listed Book Antiqua Regular as the font.
Typed some text - for the first time, no crash. VERY good!

Then I tried opening a recent newsletter (all Book Antiqua, though there
are probably some hidden bits of Arial). Crash. But the important
thing is that I may be able to build a new newsletter.

Hi Bill,

If you only have two entries in the font drop-down menu, then you have a
different problem. You need to go to font setup and add a font path so
PageStream can find some fonts!
