Hi:

Well, I've actually been building a simple document and I've come across
a couple of oddities.

If you've followed my adventures on the main list, you'll know that I've
had numerous problems getting a working install and that along the way
the content of the main File menu has displayed options that aren't
supposed to be there.

Well, after aborting a session on the present document, I restarted
PageStream and used "File | Open Recent" to select the existing
document. The first thing I wanted to do was to "Place" or "Import" a
picture file. After making sure that the Object tool was selected, I
went to "File | Import" except that it wasn't "File | Import," it was
"File | Place Graphic." Was disaster striking again?

I closed the document (or closed the program and started fresh, not
sure), and clicked "New" on the Navigator. A new document appeared,
which I immediately dismissed. Then I went to "File | Open Recent" and
selected my file. This time the "Place Graphic" item was gone and the
correct choice was there.

SECOND ITEM:

This was during the original editing session before the program aborted.
(Don't remember what I was doing when it failed.) In the document, I
have a paragraph where I wanted a drop cap. When it came time to select
the font for the enlarged letter, I was able to select from the regular
font lister, but not from the advanced lister which shows the font
samples. That one came up empty except to show the sample of the font I
had selected with the regular lister. Is that the correct behavior in
this window?

SPECULATION AND QUESTION:

This concerns the swapping of menu items and, by extension, all the
other problems I experienced earlier. On various occasions during that
ordeal I had situations where the Navigator correctly showed that I was
using the new version, but the About PageStream item under Help listed
an older version. Perhaps this could have happened if I had used an
earlier version before starting the new one and a fragment of the older
one was still in memory?

But there's also this. Last night I had reason to go to "Documents and
Settings/... PageStream 5." I don't know why exactly I did it, but I
right-clicked on the ".ini" file and there was an option there to open
the file with PageStream 4. This strikes me as weird since in those days
the ".ini" file would have been only in the directory where I installed
the program and not here. I wonder if this may explain it:

Way back in the day, there was a version of PageStream 4 that apparently
used the regular Windows Installer. I say that because there's still an
entry in "Install or Remove Programs" for it. I'm wondering, would it be
a good idea to "uninstall" that instance of the program? Could it
somehow be accounting for the crossover between versions?

PageStream no longer has that string in the menu. While anything is
possible when a bug strikes, the likely hood that a memory stomp would
create the exact old string in place of the new string is like winning
the lottery, getting struck by lightening and discovering cold fusion
all on the same day.

I would suggest instead that you are running old and new at different
times without knowing it. Perhaps you have the .pgs document short cut
still set for the old version or different menu/desktop shortcuts. Same
for your about box showing new version sometimes and old versions
another. It is _way_ more likely that you would see garbage in the
menus/about box than valid old data.

Your problem with the font dialog has been reported several times on the
list for this new version and is nothing new. Turning off the font
sample should restore sanity and if you can see the checkbox to turn it
off then try resizing the dialog. That and printing the document cropped
are the two logical/reproducible problems with this version. These are
not "dangerous" bugs, and should not cause a crash or cause any other
odd behavior outside of the described behavior.

That PageStream5.ini file is a simple text file that PageStream loads to
determine the user preferences. Nothing in it determines what version of
PageStream to load, and no matter what you might put in this file won't
cause a different version to get loaded. It is loaded by the version,
not the other way around.

A Windows registery will determine what gets loaded when you double
click on a document, but that is set and maintained by the Windows
desktop and is not set/modified/used by anything in PageStream.
