Hi,

There is an author associated with a PageStream file. This author do
for example also get exported to the PDF file.

How can I change the name of the author?

I assume you created a document using someone else's computer or you're
a woman who's just gone through a bitter divorce and are reassuming
your maiden name. (If you're the latter, you'll have to reregister
PageStream.) (:^)>

I hope the easiest way to do that is:

1. Print out a report of everything (on the Layout menu, save it as a
file and then print the file).

2. Print a copy of the document if you don't already have one.

3. Export all graphics which you do not already have saved.

4. Export all text which you do not already have saved.

5. Close the document.

6. Delete the document.

7. Open a new document, format all of the text boxes, import all of the
text files into the appropriate text boxes and reformat it selecting
fonts listed in your report, import all of the graphics to their
original places, draw in any lines necessary to recreate the document
in accordance with the one you printed out.

8. Save the document. The author of the saved document will be the one
under which you registered PageStream.

If you're publishing an author's works, have them buy a copy of
PageStream for you to publish it on if they want their name on it.
(:^)>

Your kidding, right? I can think of several reasons why someone might
need to change the "Author" on a PDF from the registered name for
Pagestream. Legal ones, I'm pretty sure. One you gave at the end of your
message, someone hires you to take the text and TIFFs they've given you,
along with the sketch of the layout, and make a PDF out of it. They are
the author. You don't really expect someone to buy a new copy of
Pagestream -and- delete their old -and- reinstall every time they need
to put a different name under "Author"?

Shouldn't step 6a be "Delete Pagestream" and 6b be "Reinstall Pagestream
under a different registration, or move to a different computer"?

I think that the simplest way to handle this would be for SoftLogik to add
the feature in the program. Actually, this is a very important feature in a
professional environment where you may have several users, thus several
"authors." Moreover, it's already possible to specify the user with the
"Keep History" feature; it's a little strange that you can't specify the
original author anywhere in the program.

Well, actually I am a pretty new user -- I have only used PageStream for a
couple of months. For the last ten years or so I have used LaTeX which
probably is the best environment available to use when writing the
technical reports that I have had to make while being a student.
PageStream is certainly not suited for such purposes.

On the other hand there are some tasks that LaTeX isn't suited for. I
mainly started using PageStream to edit a local scout groups small monthly
newsletter. PageStream is very well suited for such tasks, and it is
definitely one killer application.

Back then a friend of mine mailed me a couple of small example files so I
could see what he had used PageStream for and what could be accomplished
using PageStream. I have long ago deleted his files, but stupid as I was a
couple of months ago, all my own files have been based upon one of his
example files, ie. my first was, and the remaining has been based upon my
first. So even though I don't use any of his objects anymore and even has
changed the margins and sometimes also the portrait/landscape, all my files
list him as the author. A bit annoying.

Well, it seems the process of changin the author name is a bit difficult.
Luckily it seems like the PageStream files are in a simple IFF format, and
since my name is shorter than my friend's, it should be rather safe to
change the name by editing the file itself.

My name and organization and serial code are part of the 'Pagestream3.prefs'
file which is straight ASCII. You could temporarily change the name there,
create a new document, and that new name should associate to the new doc.
Right?

No smileys on this. It would be good to have the option to specify the
author, with the default to be the registered owner. It might be even
better to add a "Published by:" line with the registered owner's name,
which would help to encourage registration to be updated when the
software is sold or transferred.

Yes. Small world. There are quite a few Canadian users popping up on these
lists, that I've identified. (I subscribe to three). Nice to see as there is
not a lot of support around here.

The default Author of a document is the username that you filled in when
installing PageStream. It is contained in the prefs file.

The copyright contains "Copyright <year> <company>" which is defined as
well in the pref file (and when first installing).

I don't see any commands to change them. I suppose I could add it now that
information is being used in a more visible way.
