Hello,

I have been trying to install 4.07 using the install script. It fails
every time with a missing file requester and I have to abort.
What I finally did was just copy everything from the archive
to where I wanted it and it seems to work. I was wondering if
this is a valid installation? If I start having some obscure
problems a month or two from now I may not relate the two.

It will most probably work alright. Both r5 and r7 (and perhaps also r4)
had a few problems with the installation being aborted. If you in
the source directory creates the missing directories (if I remember
correct it is Documents, Graphics and Text) the installer will install
PageStream just fine with these empty directories.

Deron should really address this small problem, because some might
have problems due to this.

Thanks Uffe. I don't recall having the problem with r4. I'll try it
again and create the directories first.

Deron has his version of lha set to "not include empty directories" which
means that the archive will undo and be missing some directories. Until Deron
fixes his lha settings (hello?) do this:

Unarchive the lha file.
Look at your pagestream: directory
Create in the unarchived directory any dirs you see that are missing
Run the script. It will work fine.

The installation you did is time consuming, but not destructive, other than
overwriting your prefs files.

Someone else mentioned that the installer version included in the archive
was an older version. I deleted it and it worked. Although on hind sight
I am not sure if I deleted everything I had added first. Don't really feel
like
going through it all again to find out though. I know Deron is very
overworked but I'm surprised he hasn't fixed these obvious problems.
Maybe he just isn't aware of them or has reasons for keeping them in.
Deron?

Thanks, that's good to know.

Me too. From my install_log_file I got the following:

Copy file "HHV" to "PageStream:".
Copy file "HHV.info" to "PageStream:".
Copy contents of drawer "Help" to "PageStream:Help".
COPYFILES: Problem with source file/drawer in line 320.
Error not Trapped!!!

I ended up just doing the install manually in the end.

Bye,

I tried getting a log file but when the installer aborted the file
was removed. I use PFS so maybe that is why. But I did
run SnoopDos and noticed about the same thing: the
installer had just finished with the help files when it died.

I'm trying to install PageStream 4.0r7nh (No Help Files). I copied all
the help files from my r5 installation into the unarc'd r7 drawer and
have tried repeatedly to install it. It stops with the requester:

Sorry... an Error Has Occurred!

COPYFILES: Problem with source file/drawer
DOS Error Type: Unable to locate a file or
drawer

My Log file is:

******* Installation Log *******
User Level: EXPERT
Pretend: No

PageStream requires 4MB of free memory, AmigaOS 2.04 or higher, and
8MB of free hard drive space.

Error not Trapped!!!

Looking thru the install script, it appear it's just copying the help
files as wildcards at that point. They are there.

Got any ideas? I sent this to Deron, but he's busy of course.

My install (the full one) stopped at that point as well.

Thanks. I won't bother to try to d/l the full one then. Maybe I'll try
substituting the OS3.5 Installer.

I didn't try that - please post if it installs successfully or otherwise.

People might be interested in some tests I did on Pagemaker. This is a
very nice DTP program, quite similar to PGS. It claims to be able to
import and export HTML and to export PDF.

Nowadays, it is not enough to just produce a printed document - it has
to be made available on the Web too. So I wanted to see if you could,
for instance, take a Word document and convert it for web use.

The results did not live up to the claims.

WORD IMPORT
I started with a 4-page Word doc containing some pictures. The text
imported OK but the images came out all in a heap at the start of the
document. They had to be cut-and-pasted first as their positions were
locked up, then put in their right places and wrap around applied.

HTML IMPORT
Pagemaker imports the text and all the images but ignores table layout -
the contents are there, but not arranged. You can import from a URL and
it follows the links to images. I tried the first page of the Amiga.com
site and all the components appeared except (as usual) part of the red
background on the left.

HTML EXPORT
Exported the tidied-up version of the Word doc. It copied the layout
with a complex table arrangement, as expected. In IE, the text was at
first in the wrong size and centred, but importing the page into
Netscape Composer and immediately resaving it cleared this up. It then
looked on IE pretty much exactly like the original doc. I suspect some
attempt to use CSS which went wrong - Composer, being rather basic,
would clear out any CSS.

There are lots of options to set.

This is _not_ a good way to make a normal web page but could be a handy
way to display on the web what is mainly a printed magazine, such as
AmigaWorld.

PDF EXPORT
Disappointing. It turns out that this only works if you also have Acrobat
Distiller installed. Otherwise, you can only export a PostScript file.

CONCLUSION
The HTML import is marginally better than in PGS, as it does bring in
the images, but both are crippled by not doing tables. The HTML export
is much better than in PGS, though not perfect. PGS does at least try to
do PDF export on its own, so scores here.

What is interesting is to see that a product from a giant company is
not, overall, any better than one from a very small company.

I've not had a chance to try out InDesign yet.
