Now, after re-installing PgS4.0r7, I find everything is back to normal:
I can leave the printer set to /Portrait/, and both landscape- and
portrait-oriented documents are properly oriented on the page.

Either there were corrupted files in my original r7 download or the
aborted installation (due to the absence of empty directories) left
some incompatible files un-updated.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. I have changed my copy of Tip #42
to read "This 'Tip' is OBSOLETE!!!"
