Hi, Gang --

It's been ages since I've read this list, so please be patient with me if
this has already been discussed to death.

I FINALLY got around this morning to downloading 3.4, beta 9 for Amiga from
the Softlogik secure site. (All 7-plus megs of it via a 56k modem...
sheesh!) Wink

I'm currently running the latest version of 3.3 (b?) and it works well for
me, except for the occasional lock-up. What I want to know is, should I
install 3.4? The "beta" in the archive name frightens me a bit. Is 3.4
usable/stable on your systems? Are the improvements worth it?

Your insights greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Steve Folberg

Steve,
The only problem I've encountered is with the new spell checker. After it
has gone through all text and corrections have been made, PageStream locks
up, forcing a reset.

Okay, I installed PgS 3.4 b9 to my hard drive, and renamed my old
installation directory to Pagestream_old, rather than installing over it in
case of problems. PgS 3.4 is now in my WorkRazzagestream directory.

When I try to run 3.4, I get a system prompt asking me to insert volume
Pagestream4 in any drive. Creating this assign in a shell window clears the
prompt and allows the program to run.

However, the Help system won't work (the HHV program loads but can't open
the document softlogik.html). Also, the Spellchecker flags every word as
misspelled, leading me to think that it's looking for a dictionary that it
cannot find.

The assigns in my user-startup read as follows:

;BEGIN PageStream3
Assign PageStream: "WorkRazzageStream"
Assign PageStream3: "WorkRazzageStream"
Assign SoftLogik: "PageStream:SoftLogik"
Assign Fonts: "PageStream:SoftLogik/Fonts" ADD
;END PageStream3

Any ideas what else I need to do to fix these problems?

Many thanks!

for version *4.0* you need also a PageStream4: assign.

Don't think so. 3.4b9 does excist, as opposed to 4.0b9.

Yes, but the question was about 3.4beta9, not 4.0beta5.

You need one more assign:

Assign PageStream4: "WorkRazzageStream"

PgS 3.4 b9 is based on the same source as PgS4.0 so it looks for
PageStream4: at times.

One other problem with 3.4b9. Trapping was originally part of the 3.0
feature set but Deron decided to only implement it in 4.0+. If you open
the Line/Fill requester for an object there is a tab for trapping.
Pressing this tab immeadiately crashes the program. Hopefully, Deron will
write a patch to remove/ghost/disable this tab. In the mean time, just
remember "it's a trap!"

Hey there, Steven Folberg

v3.4 beta.3 is solid as a rock. Beta 9 should be great!

It is not sufficient: inside the program the name of some file
(PageStream3.colors, for example) are hardcoded like PageStream4.colors. I
had to patch the executable with a binary editor.

Yes, and from time to time I have also problems undoing operations like
reshape and movement of simple objects.

I think that sooner or later Deron should try to give 3.x users a more
updated version.
