I use PageStream on various Macs, an Amiga and a couple of Windows based machines... four of them running XP Pro, and one a Windows 7 Enterprise Laptop.

ALL of them are having issues at the moment with PageStream.

My Win 7 Enterprise laptop and my wife's XP Pro based machine, both display the same odd behaviour. When I load a file... any of my hundreds of PageStream files!!!... it puts the file window somewhere off the right of the screen and down below what shows up... and when I scroll over to where the Window is supposed to be, it is fine so far... but when I scroll DOWN from there, I can actually briefly see the window, but the machines both instantly crash at that point. PageStream is no longer anywhere to be seen... gone! So, I can't do anything with the file. If I try to create a NEW file, on either machine, I get the same issue... no Window shows up on screen, something seems to be made OFF to the right and down... again... and when I scroll over to it, it crashes as well. Basically, two machines, with different operating systems doing the same thing, and I can no longer make use of PageStream.

One iMac seems to run PageStream, but there is no slider on the right hand side. I can't scroll up or down.... I am stuck with what I see... and nothing works... I cannot even "kill" the program, for it is frozen... the only way to do anything else is to shut the machine off physically.

My main machine at home... the one I am using now... was working just fine previously.... until yesterday. I was working on a new timetable for my class, when I can no longer move or manipulate boxes for text and such, on the screen. I can't move them around... except in a VERY limited manner... maybe 2-3 mm.

Now, I have used the program since about 1987 or 8, and have gone through all the iterations of it in the process. I have had problems with it at times, but never so many machines all at once (I don't use them all at once, different ones are attached to different printers, so I use whatever one meets my need at the moment. I do move the files or save them to a central server at school.

Now, five machines are having issues with the program... so, I went to the one in our workroom which is hooked up to a colour printer. I loaded the file I wanted to print, and it showed up nicely.... BUT, it did not want to print.... it just into loop mode, it seemed... AND it too had the odd behaviour of NOT having a scroll bar on the right hand side, so I could not move the image to edit it. AND, it would not let me get out of PageStream either! It took a manual shut down via the power button.

I am at wits end. I have run Malware Bytes, Advances System Care 5, Crap Cleaner, Perfect Disk 10, and AVG 2012, all in the hopes that they may find SOMETHING wrong with my machine that is causing it... all to no avail!!!

Any suggestions from anyone?

Just in case you want the latest file I am working on, which does the screwy things very nicely, I will attach it to this post. Check it for viruses first, though. My system says it is clean, but don't take any chances. Perhaps one of you can try it, and if it works with your machine, ...prints and allows editing..., then I will have to try to figure out what is screwing it up here at my end, but because it is happening to so many machines with three different OS's, I can't imagine what I can do to address the issue.

No suggestions as yet. Please send the file privately and I'll give it
a go.

That sounds bizarre. The list strips attachments, but feel free to send to me personally and I'd be happy to take a look.

I notice that you start with Win7 and WinXP, then refer to iMac. Just to be clear, what platforms are you using?

Windows NT series, clearly enough (Win7 and WinXP), but the iMac -- which version of OS X and is that a PowerPC based unit then? (most likely G5?).

easiest thing to try first is to locate the pagstream configuration directory and rename it. then start pagestream and let it rebuild the configuration and settings. you will need your registration info to get the program out of demo mode. if the configuration is corrupted doing this should clear the problem. Considering this happened on your windows machine shortly after patch tuesday! (oh the humanity) it may be an update that is causing it to hiccup.this may take deron a lil longer to correct if need be.
also try starting pagestream from the command line and check any error messages from there, this will also help in clarifying what is happening. (try this first)
your mac may be suffering a similar update fate, have they not patched it recently?

Gil, only with the Windows problem I can help you. See also:
http://www.pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=82

*Action 1 (more work):*
Rename PageStream5.ini to PageStream5old.ini.

Start PGS as new, meaning you have to fill in your name, (company) and
product key.
Close PGS.

Now read (text) PageStream5.ini. Look for DOCUMENTPALETTE. Copy that
sentence and paste it over the same sentence in PageStream5old.ini.
Delete (or rename) PageStream5.ini. And rename PageStream5old.ini to
PageStream5.ini.

PGS should work now as normal again!

*Action 2 (less work):*
Instead of the above you could fill in the original PageStream5.ini:
DOCUMENTPALETTE SHOW AT 1064 86 SIZE 301 120 COLLAPSED OFF

Should do the trick also. You may have to change the window sizes in PGS
itself.

I must say that I haven't had this document problem since I changed from
Windows XP to 7. At least I can't remember it since I have Windows 7.
Yes, PGS 'remembers'. Not always that good (because you have to a lot to
change that back). But Windows 7 and PGS, a better behavior. Cross my
fingers now! Wink
