Hi,

I know that one can fade out the edges of a bitmap in pagestream if it has an alpha channel.

But is it possible to apply a gradient fill to an imported bitmap with an opacity setting that will allow it to made an image fade out at the edges?

This page on the PageStream site seems to imply that:
http://pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=1241

It says: "For those PhotoShop-like effects, you can now apply a gradient or radial blend mask to pictures/EPS/PDF/ and Drawings. These objects will then appear to fade into the page beneath it. Of course, no update is complete without improvements to the drawing tools."

I haven't been able to get it to work.

Hi Brent,

maybe this is meant as something simpler.
You can have a picture (bitmap) or drawing (vector), where you place a
(vector) shape on. This shape you can give a gradient (or radial blend).
If you turn off the stroke (outline), and fiddle with opacity...
Something like Blending on:http://pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=802
Or:
http://pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=1217

Anybody else?

Theo

Oh, I thought the function might be able to make the bitmap fade out into the background (transparency on edges of bitmap).

Maybe someone knows for sure.

The way to do a fade like you are asking is to use photoshop, the gimp, something of that sort, do a feathered select and delete content leaving the transparent background. You will need to use a graphic format that supports transparency, such as png.

If you don't actually need it to be a transparency fade, but "fade" into the page color you can fake it in PageStream by overlaying an object that has the appropriate gradient fill from a transparent center to the page color at the border.

I thought not, but I was wrong. Mask a graphic, then set the mask options.

1. Import bitmap graphic
2. menu: object > mask > generate mask
3. menu: object > mask > mask options…
4. set the options as desired
5. click ok

I recommend starting with 100% to 0%, blend of shape and sufficient inset to get the effect you want. Changing the default taper from linear provides a different progression for the blend.

And this is documented on the website athttp://pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=790

The main issue I have found is that the shape blends show on screen (and presumably print) as radial blends.

On the other handhttp://pagestream.org/?action=Documents&id=1217 says (at the very bottom)

> One last trick with text. Create a text frame or frameless text and fill it with several lines of text. With the Object tool, select the text and chooseMake Drawing from the Drawing submenu in the Object menu. Now choose Mask Options and set a gradient blend, with a start opacity of 80% and an end opacity of 30% and an angle of 90 degrees.

But it doesn't work: the Mask menu items are ghosted when you do make drawing or convert to path.

Thought to know a lot about PGS (not all!). Never saw this.

Many thanks!

Thanks Tim! Both your suggestions were very clever and will work for the type of fade I need.

I'll have to print out your instructions and insert them into the paper copy of my PageStream manual for future reference!
