Hi! I've read the section on chapters and pages in the PageStream manual at least four times over and I just *don't* understand how to do what I need to do... I am working on a childrens' book that is about 60 pages long. As this is the first time I've ever done a multi-page layout in PageStream, I laid-out the whole book sequentially....pages 1 to 60 one after the other. Pages 1 to 4 are merely the inner cover, copyright page and dedication page. Pages 5 to 55 are the story and illustrations. Pages 56 to 60 are pages that give solutions to puzzles in the book. Now I realise I need the page numbering of the first section to be roman numerals (i.e. i, ii, iii, iv). Then at the start of the second section (the main story) I need the pages to be numbered in Arabic numerals starting again at number 1. Then for the "solutions" section, I might not have page numbers, or they might be numbered in some other way (again starting at number 1). I don't understand how to get PageStream to start numbering each section starting at Page 1. First I tried playing with the Document setup...where I could specify how pages were numbered, but this just resulted in the first page of the document (the inner cover) being numbered page 4 (what I really wanted was numbering to start on page 4 from number 1). Then I thought, maybe if I set up chapters, I can define the first section as a chapter, the second section (they story) as a chapter, and the solutions section as a chapter. That way I could specify different page numbering methods for each chapter. So I tried creating a chapter but all it does is create a new blank chapter at the end of the document (page 61). I don't know how to put already created pages "into" those chapters. I'm sure it's obvious and easy - but not to me! The manual does not make it obvious either. Can anyone shed some light on this process? Thanks, |

Well, this is also a returning subject. And I do it my way, not the way I copied this from an older mail from me (lazy, I know), negative numbering: You can add the Roman numerals manually. I hope this covers it for you too. It's an easy approach (but not Theo Op 24-6-2012 2:56, Brent schreef:

Hi Brent, On Jun 23, 2012, at 7:56 PM, Brent wrote: > Hi! You may well want to define a different master page for each chapter so the pages in the chapter set to the appropriate master page. Or it might not make a difference, it all depends on just what you want. > Set page number in chapter setup to start at 1 > To restart page numbering you must use chapters > yep > From the menu: Layout -> Move Pages… The dialog allows you to select the source, the page run (start to stop), insertion (before/after), and destination. I would create the three chapters, then do the page moves by: pp 56--60, move to chapter 3 (insertion: before/after makes no difference as the chapter is empty) You could also create just two chapters for the last two sections and leave the front matter at the root of the document. Six of one, half dozen of another, but if you do all in chapters make sure there are no pages at the document root. Define page numbering style for each chapter, and so on. I notice your final section starts on an even numbered page. Personal preference on my part, but I prefer starting chapters/sections on new sheets which means they start on odd numbered pages. If you want to do this in PgS you want to be careful of how the document is setup: depending on how you generate the final product blank pages (which occur when one chapter ends on an odd numbered page and the next chapter also starts on an odd numbered page implying a blank page between the two) may not be preserved. To avoid any issue with that having an object on the blank pages ensures they are always included. As most of my documents are text/article based I generally just extend the article's text frames to the end of the chapter, forcing it to an even number of pages. Tim Doty |

Ah, printing and the use of negative pagenumbering. You can only print (or save as PDF) the whole document: this works. It If you specify a range, only the positive pages are printed! So create chapters! Theo
