Hi everyone - thanks for your help with chapter / page numbering.

A new question regarding preserving the aspect ratio of images or objects.

I already know how to do this when resizing an object with the mouse, but how do you preserve the items aspect ratio when resizing precisely with the numerical entry boxes?

i.e. If I have an image that is 3.567 inches by 2.005 inches, and I go to the objects "W:" (width) numerical entry box at the bottom of the screen and change this to an even 3.000 inches, it doesn't preserve the aspect ratio of the image (i.e. the height of the image is not changed in proportion to the change in width).

Is there any way to correct this? I hope there is, because the numerical entry is so useful for very precise resizing of images.

Thanks!

Brent

I don't know of any way to do so directly (though I could be missing it -- I learn things too) but remember that PgS has powerful numerical entry. In the example you give you could:

type 3" for width, hit tab to switch to the height field, then type "*3/3.567" after the 2.005. The ability to do math in the fields is so useful and something I very much miss in other applications. You can also specify units, so you can do fun things like 2.5cm +1in

Quick and dirty solution.... Very Happy
type in the desired width value, click the apply button on the left of the edit pallet....
now note the updated value for the width percentage ... copy that value into the percentage height box.. Smile

on a side note... i just gave tim doty a tip for using pagestream... kinda scary..

hey! no fair cheating and having PgS calculate the percentage for you (which is what the math I was suggesting is in effect doing)

Smile Smile

That's a good approach and saves thinking about the math (good call, admfubar) . OTOH there are times when using the math capability is just plain handy. I do it all the time for setting the height of text objects. For example, a header line of 18pt with a 50% distance after and 13 lines of 12pt at 120% leading is 18pt*1.5+13*12pt*1.2

Tim Doty

(Actually, 12pt at 120% leading is 0.2 inches which is what I actually use instead of typing 12pt*1.2, but the other is a more general solution.)

Yes. The box to the right of the "W:" box shows the percent of the
original width. Copy that percentage to the box to the right of the "H:"
box and your aspect will be restored.

I like to ad one more.
If you change a bitmap with the mouse at the corners, the correct aspect
ratio is preserved.

However if you change a vector picture that way, the aspect ratio isn't
correct anymore. Unless...
Unless you make a Drawing of the vector picture (menu Object/
Drawing/Make Drawing).

Another way is to use the 'percentage boxes'.

When you type 3" in the width box you will find that the number in the corresponding percentage box has changed.

Type the same number in the percentage box for height – hit 'Return' and Hey Presto!

With many thanks,
