Had a small problem with an object and how text flowed around it. Thought this object had the same properties as the other similar objects in the document. It gave me a bit of a puzzle to work on. The idea struck me that an objects palette might be useful in seeing the properties of an object(s) at a glance. Making this small formatting inconsistency a bit easier to track down. I also was thinking that the object palette would be customizable to show what properties we are most interested in. (maybe a collapsible tree structure?)

Anyone else think this might be useful? Deron, how hard would this be to implement?

Sounds like a good feature to me. Some of the properties would likely be uninteresting to most people and I could see a point in not displaying *every* property -- but either a tree structure to allow collapsing/expanding views or a toggle to allow it would be nice IMO. For example, the internal object id would be uninteresting to most, but could be interesting to some.

I always like new ideas to get Deron going. Wink

I, mostly, use shape for text wrap. If I want it to be exactly flowing
around an irregular figure, I draw a vector shape around it, turn the
stroke color to none (Line & Fill), and use shape.
In the Text Wrap floating palette (Wrap Method) I can see what I use.

I'm just curious why you set the stroke color to none instead of selecting the vector object, the object you want to flow around and set mask (from the object menu). PgS won't display the vector object (no need to set the stroke) and "attaches" it to the base object so if you move or resize the base object the mask stays with it.

Well Tim (did you get any sleep at all?),

I forget to use the mask for text flowing (I use masking, but not with
text flow in mind). Nice idea though!
Anyway, if I don't want to get the text too close to the picture (in
sharp corners from that picture) I draw a vector shape.

It isn't a "palette" in the way PgS uses the term, it is a dialog. If you are using text wrap, you know the one (bound to the 'w' key)

select an object, press the 'w' key. Or go to the menu (Object/Text Wrap…). Or read the documentation about wrapping text around objects.

Yes, it is a dialog window. I couldn't find the right word this morning

David, you can find it in the menu: Object/ Text Wrap... (and you see
also a 'W').
If you select an object, and give in on your keyboard a 'w', you'll see
that the Text Wrap dialog window (now the correct name) opens.

Okay. I don't use key combinations much and I thought he meant a palette
rather than a dialog window.

and that is why I clarified that it was *not* a palette, but a dialog.

In any case, an object properties palette could be useful for inspecting objects. I suspect that different users would find different properties useful, but there are likely to be commonalities. Things that come to mind include:

- object style (which is awkward to use being only exposed via the object menu, this could be a drop down menu giving additional inspection and access)
- text wrap method and offsets
- object type (perhaps obvious, but I think it would be useful to expose explicitly)
- line and fill (just for inspection purposes, no need to be editable)
- text frame options (at least for inspection, even if not editable)
- existence of mask
- layer drop down
- object name/id
- everything currently in edit palette (at least for inspection

If it was presented as a tree I would put items from the edit palette under the same branch. I think a reasonable presentation might be:

Object Name/Id and type (name and icon?)
Icon row with:
- Toggle icon indicating whether or not the object has a mask
- Toggle icon indicating whether or not the object is a text frame (click opens dialog)
Popup menu for object style
Popup menu for object layer
Text wrap method icon followed by spin widgets for offsets
Line settings: spin widget for line weight, clickable color swatch and spin widget for intensity, clickable icon for style, mini menu for blend with opacity spin widget, clickable icons for start and end
Fill settings: as above
Screen: mini menu for plate, display other settings
Trapping: mini menu for fill and line

An abbreviated version would put the text wrap method icon in the icon row and clicking it would open the dialog. Similarly, reduce line and fill to icons with a click on either opening the dialog to the correct tab.

My two cents anyway. I started on a mockup before remembering I can't attach it. Doh!
