It has been a while since I had a need to use the table of contents generation, but I ran it for a new project that -- however new -- inherited styles from a previous one that had styles flagged for inclusion into the TOC. So it worked fine. Then I decided to move the TOC into a chapter instead of having it at the document root and then I discovered that it will no longer generate the TOC.

I can create text frame in the root of the document, place text cursor, select generate toc from menu and it immediately returns without generating anything.

I have verified that the styles still have TOC inclusion flagged. I've closed and re-opened the document. Still can't generate a TOC. Any ideas?

Hi Tim,
I got caught out the other day doing something silly with this. When
you select Edit - Generate - Table of Contents from the menu to get the
Generate Table of Contents box. I was making the mistake of clicking OK
which would result in behaviour exactly as you mention above. You need
to click the 'Insert' button in the box instead. This is with Amiga PGS
4.1.5.6.

Not sure if that will help or if I'm just stating the obvious.

Another good tip for generating TOC is to define a specific text style
that uses dot leaders set up to position the page numbers at a tab on
the right hand side of the page with a row of automatically generated
dots between the text on the left and the page number on the right. For
some reason PGS doesn't apply this style when you tell it to use this
when generating TOC, but it's easy enough to select the text and apply
your TOC specific style to generate the dot leaders.

Cheers,
Anthony.

Hi! I should know better (and in fact had just done it correctly), but I'd slipped. Thanks for the reminder! Now it is spinning wheels while generating.

My pre-existing styles cover the formatting of the TOC, which is a good thing because I think I've forgotten all the tricks like what you mention.
