right now i have the latest linux version of linux PageStream for 64 but
computers - PageStream5.0.5.8 Pro 10/11/10.

i have the proper PPD's for this printer installed on my system.

i have xubuntu 12.04 and a brother printer: Brother HL-5370DW BR-Script3

i discovered that some older pdf documents generated by PageStream in
2010 would not print because they were sending a command to the printer
which shuts it off.

it took a LOT of trouble shooting accompanied by a discussion on the
Linux list to be sure this is what was happening.

the shutting off was confirmed by looking at the reports in the CUPS
html based interactive printing manager.

the same documents sent to the printer from an OSX Mac printed.

so as a final step in my trouble shooting I went back into the current
PageStream and opened the original of the document and printed it from
PageStream.

now it printed, which has not been the case in the past which is why i was
using the export to pdf and then print strategy.

however when it printed the first thing that happened was that the
printer "out of paper light" came on". I checked and the printer had
paper. So I hit the printer "go button" and the PageStream document
printed.

I tried printing it again and the same thing happened. Printer "out of
paper" light comes on, hit the "go" button and document prints.

Then I saved a version of the document as a pdf file and tried printing
it and it printed with no problem at all. No turning off printer and
no "out of paper" error.

I don’t recall if there’s any way to alter the prolog PgS sends the printer, sounds like something in that is interacting poorly with the Brother printer. It is important to note that BR-Script is *not* postscript and is only mostly compatible. For example, my HL-4070CDW does not honor the font unload command so if you try to print a document of font samples you quickly run out of memory. Their support refused to ever acknowledge the issue beyond instructing me to reinstall the windows printer driver (despite being on linux…)

I know a long time ago PgS sent postscript that prevented printing duplex. Deron resolved this, but it is entirely possible that there’s an issue with the postscript. OTOH, given the brother level of postscript compatibility it wouldn’t surprise me if PgS generated postscript that relied on a proper implementation.

If I remember well, in Postscript the prolog is only a text file
prepended to the to be printed postscript document to instruct the
printer of page size, what paper tray to use, etc...

dig you pagestream drawer to find that "prolog" file and see what's in
it. should be editable easylly ^^)
