I have seen a few posts about printing. Most seem to be doing the same thing I do -- save the PgS file as a PDF then use a PDF viewer to print. Has anyone come up with a solution/reason PgS doesn't like to print directly to a printer? The PDF method works fine for me, I need to save the file most files as PDFs anyway, but would be nice to print drafts directly.

I'm using Linux Mint 12 (Ubuntu 11.10 based) with an AMD Phenom II quad core processor, 8 GB RAM. I'm using an HP 2605 printer through a USB port.

Hi,

I use pagestream on an amiga, and print directly tp a postscript printer.
I had to set up a .ppd file in Print Setup within pagestream, to get colour prints
but workbench (system) printers work fine in black & White.

Hello Farna,

Every OS is different. Most printing problems are with Windows shared printers. On Linux, you have to use the 32 bit version. The 64bit version printing is broken as far as I know.

I've been pretty happy with PageStream 5.0.5.8 Pro on AOS4 (G4 XE >
SAM 460ex > X1000), but I am giving Scribus a try. Thanks for the
suggestion.

One thing I noticed in my first hour of "trying": Scribus takes a lot
more brain power. For my minor needs, PgS does what I want with a
little clicking and typing. My main use lately has been to send
monthly notices of meetings. They have a yellow banner with the
organization's name sideways on the left, bottom to top, and at top
and bottom respectively, horizontally and right-side-up, our web site
URL and date and number of the announcement. With PgS it was open a
text frame, type the text, size it, swing some of it around 90°, fill
with yellow, and I was done in minutes.
(http://www.frauhm.org/FRAUHMannouncement.htm for the curious.) With
Scribus, I finally got most of the banner; much experimentation on
the way to that partial success, but I don't remember exactly how I
did it. I suspect I'm going to have to put in little text frames top
and bottom for the URL and date stuff, and they probably won't be
transparent, so I'll have to figure out how to add color again.
Figuring it out is fun, but at my age...

I made a PDF of my try, and looked at it successfully with AmiPDF on
the OS4 side, but I made it by "Ignoring" two "problems" that I
"should understand before proceding" and I have no idea what the
problems are.

My guess is that it's a case of not using a PS printer. I'm sure I
printed my announcements duplex mode (USPS address on back) directly
to the printer as long as my HP 2605dn Laserjet worked. Now with a
non-PS Officejet I save to disc as postscript then print (one-sided
at a time) with AmiPS.

Even if I use Scribus, I'll have to print from OS4. Printing from the
Ubuntu I'm using smears colors like crazy!
