Hello Everyone!!

Is PageStream still being developed?

It's been 4 years since the last update and I don't even see bug fixes, not even cosmetic ones like the linux fill/line settings.

PageStream is a great program and it would be sad to see it go.

Definitely! I would pay for updates.

If we all pitched in $50 for an upgrade, maybe Deron word make time for updates.

But, the problem comes down to the fact that he supports all platforms, and I have doubts that the small amount of money that we could come up with would be enough for all of them.

I use aMac 95% of the time,and PS is on my Mac.

PageStream is the most valuable and most used program I own. I have used it everyday since it was first published. Sadly, I have switched to Linux (Ubuntu) and just don't have the technical know-how to get PageStream installed. I downloaded the Demo version to see if I could install, but without success. Although PgS has some issues on linux, it should run just fine. I do so from time to time. If you have the download then just unzip it wherever you want and run the “run page stream” script (or whatever it is called, I forget and don’t have a linux box in front of me).

That should just work. If it doesn’t, try opening a terminal window and executing it from there which has the benefit of getting information such as errors. Unfortunately, Ubuntu has tried so hard to copy Win8’s move to a phone interface I’m not sure how you would get a terminal window open on it, or what their screwing around with the detaching menus would do to PageStream. But I assure you, any problems starting PgS are more likely to be Ubuntu’s fault than PageStream’s.

If you are in a position to do so, I recommend using Mint with Mate as the interface. Its roughly what Ubuntu used to be.

Thank you for the reply. I have placed all the PageStream files in a folder and have tried clicking on the "run PageStream" icon, with no results. As for a terminal, yes, I can open it, but absolutely clueless as to what I should do with it. I am far from computer savvy - I just want to click something and go to work.

I have used "Wine" which is an Windows-to-Linux interpreter, from what I understand, and am able to run the Windows version, sort of. Palettes and toolboxes disappear and can not be brought back without shutting PS down and restarting, and the menu text is so small that I have literally used a magnifying glass to read it - I have found no way to embiggen* the text.

I have never found a program as versatile as PageStream and am not ashamed to say I love what it does and how it does it. PageStream makes me look like a genius - which I am not.

I am more than happy to purchase the Linux version, but not until I'm sure I can make it work.

Deron did include a text file of how to "install" PS, but I was hopelessly lost with all the Linux technolingo.

run just fine. I do so from time to time. If you have the
download then just unzip it wherever you want and run the
“run page stream” script (or whatever it is called, I
forget and don’t have a linux box in front of me).



That should just work. If it doesn’t, try opening a
terminal window and executing it from there which has the
benefit of getting information such as errors.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu has tried so hard to copy Win8’s
move to a phone interface I’m not sure how you would get a
terminal window open on it, or what their screwing around
with the detaching menus would do to PageStream. But I
assure you, any problems starting PgS are more likely to be
Ubuntu’s fault than PageStream’s.



If you are in a position to do so, I recommend using Mint
with Mate as the interface. Its roughly what Ubuntu used to
be.

If you can get to a terminal then you can try the following. You will need to replace “Run PageStream5.sh” with whatever the actual name is. If there are spaces in the name then you can put it in double quotes like I did above.

First, you will want to change to the directory where PgS has been extracted. If that is on your desktop then that might be:

cd ~/Desktop/PageStream5

if there are spaces you can use double quotes, but what I usually do is rely on command line completion. That is, after typing “cd ~/Desk” hit the tab key. It should fill it out to “cd ~/Desktop/“ at which point you can type a little more so it is “cd ~/Desktop/Pag” and hit tab again. If hitting tab doesn’t do anything, then just hit it twice — it will show you the possible completions so you know how much more you have to type before there will be only one completion, then hit tab again. Also, don’t worry if it changes you command to something like “cd /home/rick/Desktop/“

Once you are in the directory try

./“Run PageStream5.sh"

Of course, if it starts with “Run” then you can just type “./Run” (without the quotes) and hit return, letting command line completion take care of the rest (it makes me very lazy). When you run the command from the console you get to see error messages.

Now that I think about it more, I believe there are likely some packages that Ubuntu doesn’t have installed by default that PgS needs. I’ll see what I can come up with in that regard.

Okay, I remoted into a linux system with PgS
installed and have refreshed my memory. You can use the
“ldd” command (as in “ldd PageStream5” in the PgS
directory) to see the dependencies, but…



The “ReadMe.Linux.txt” file says:

I really recommend you try linux mint. I haven’t had occasion to try PgS on it yet, but Rodney reported it as working fine just extracting the files from the archive. Ubuntu used to be a good distro, but hasn’t been for a while now.
