While waiting for the new edition of PageStream Wink , I can give you a tip:
how to import .SVG in PageStream Professional (a giveaway for now: PGS
must be able to import .pdf files).

You need a program which can import .svg files. That is not PGS (for
now). You need Inkscape:https://inkscape.org/nl/download/ (Yes!
Available for Windows, Linux, Mac)

Inkscape is capable to import, amongst many others, svg-files. The
output is restricted, and not what PGS likes. There is an escape: Save
as Portable Document Format (*.pdf)

Fill in the next items: Restrict to PDF version PDF 1.4 (the oldest
format available).
The only item next I have selected is: Rasterize filter effects
Resolution for rasterization (dpi) 90
Then click on OK.

Now import this pdf-document in PGS, and see: all vector. And can be
saved in your favorite PGS-format (ilus).

Notice also that Inkscape can trace bitmaps...
How to get that into PGS, you already know!

Greetings and the best wishes for this year!

Theo (still on Windows 7 and the latest PGS version for Windows)

Hi Giovanni,

I cannot help you there (my PGS-version works on Windows). And forgive me that I don't always follow what the other OS's problems concern for PGS.

Then again, are you sure? Are you importing a too complex pdf?
I am not able to import all pdf's in PGS, some fail or are partly imported. But I never get a rectangle  X-crossed, only when importing .eps. ;-)

Greetings,

Theo

Theo is right, that sounds like an EPS. But you don’t say what version of PgS you have. It requires PgS Pro to import PDFs and I don’t recall what version that was introduced.

Hmmm…

Actually, you are placing the PDF on a page? Import PDF? If you want to be able to edit it you have to use file open. Think of it this way: open to open a document, import to place an object.

Thank you Theo and Tim.
I am using Pagestream 5.0.5.8 Pro - Mac as written below my name in previous message.
The splash screen tells that is 5.0.5.8, the crash report tells that is 5.0.5.7...

The pdf file is created by Inkscape, only a couple of lines.
If I import the pdf, any pdf file I can only see a x-crossed rectangle.
Object information of  the x-crossed rectangle confirms that is a pdf object.

I tried to open a pdf file, but after the requester for pages, optimize for… Pagestream crashes.

Regards
Giovanni Bianchessi

My apologies for missing the info, I skim quite a bit these days and still can’t keep up with email.

So: the real issue is PgS crashing when you open the file

If you want a crosscheck, send me the PDF off list and I’ll see what I can see, but I can tell you that my experience has been that PDFs open. Now, details of how PgS opens the PDF make this only somewhat useful (accuracy of positioning, one text box being broken into numerous text boxes, etc. — but that is just part of the territory.

You should be able to send the crash dump to Deron. He has told me that the OS X crash dumps are the most useful for any platform he supports. Under /Applications/Utilities is “Console” — opening this gets you access to reviewing virtually all system logs.

The left panel starts with “SYSTEM LOG QUERIES” and below that is “DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION” where there is a header “User Diagnostic Reports”. Expand that and you should be able to see an entry for PgS, e.g., “PageStream5Pro_2014-12-23-205126_iman.crash”.

You should be able to drag and drop the PgS entry in that pane into an email to send to Deron.

Thank you for support.

I sent crash reports to support@pagestream.org (is it the Deron’s address?) and a pdf file to your e-mail address.

Looking at the PDF — PgS import works, but doesn’t look that good. For comparison, I imported it into Quark where it looked better, but was still clearly not right. Keep in mind: opening a PDF in PgS allows editing, whereas in Quark they cannot be opened, only imported and not edited.

Just to see, I exported from PgS and Quark as PDF and compared the results. PgS did not include any of the PDF in its output whereas Quark gave an accurate reproduction (unlike the incorrect preview in the application).

So… PgS can open the PDF as an editable file, but the import fails to be productive (PDF not included in export). Quark cannot open the PDF, only import and presents an inaccurate preview which would complicate placement and scaling but output is just fine.

To be fair, Quark’s preview of PDFs is, in my experience, generally better than it was with this file. Adobe Acrobat was the only application to allow editing and accurate viewing of the PDF.

Hi Tim,

can you tell me what is, more or less wrong, with the ilus (not edited,
just resized to make it the same size as the bitmap) in PGS?
https://picasaweb.google.com/102723864943907580757/PageStreamTrafficSign#6102996702468146434

(BTW: Tim does the import in Linux PGS, and I do this in Windows PGS,
both the latest PGS version)

The original comes from:

Hello Giovanni,

I found that PageStream PDF/SVG/AI import is much better if I recreate the
PDF with GhostScript.
Try to open the file in GhostScript and create an output with the PDF
printer driver of GS.

The generated PDF will be more comaptible with PageStream.

I am using this to import newer AI files, PDFs.

On Amiga OS 4 there is an AmiGS gui for Ghostscript, other platforms I
don't know.

Bye!
