OK - can someone advise which versions of PGS can deliver a document as
a PDF?

In a weak moment I agreed to product a small club handbook - which is
almost completed but of course no print shop will have a clue about
Pagestream so I need to `convert` it into something they can handle and
I`m assuming that .pdf is the way to go?

Usually I only use PageStream for my own printed creations but I don`t
fancy using my own printer for 100 copies of a 40 page booklet !

I have a feeling there has been discussion on this in the past?

I think the PGS Pro version (or is this the one which is able to load
pdf's as document)?
I can say that the Windows version does a good job. It has some small
problems, but I could pass those.
The 300+ pages pdf (I just looked it up. Yes it's been years ago)
including index did came out, just great.

Thanks David - I`m still on Win 4.something so if I try and fail I will
try to upgrade (if the upgrade path still exists)

Ah, yes! PGS 5.0.5.7 (even a lower PGS 5-version does the trick).

I am using PageStream 5.0.5.8 Pro Windows and I only print using PDF.

There are some limitations with PDF (not PGS) if I recall correctly.
Transparency comes to mind.

Greetings,

P. Marquard

Hi Tony,

I do find the built in PDF export function can fail to export certain things correctly (like transparent backgrounds).  So try it, but if it fails there is another option.

If you are using Windows or Linux (and probably Mac too) there is an export to PDF option (essentially a PDF virtual printer) available.  In Linux it is built in to the OS (at least on Lubuntu it is).

On Windows XP (which I use) I downloaded and installed the free software "PDF-Creator".  It works extremely well and shows up as one of your printer choices.  You can then "print" to this virtual printer from any application (including PageStream - I've tested it many times) and it spits out a nice looking PDF.  The only word of warning I would give is make sure you pay attention during the installation process and opt-out (uncheck) of any offers to install third-party tool bars, etc.  The older versions of PDF-Creator never asked you to install these, but I suppose the author is trying to make some money now.

I wouldn't be surprised if later versions of WIndows have such a PDF printer driver already built in.

The only catch with PDF printer drivers is that they might not interpret text as text, but rather convert the text to vector graphics or raster graphics.  The PDF will look great, and print great, but if you wanted to do a text search within the PDF from within a reader, it might not recognize the text characters as actual letters anymore, because they would just be graphics to the PDF renderer.

Many thanks to all who responded.

The messages encouraged me to try export as a PDF on my version of
PageStream and it worked like a dream!

I am a happy bunny.
