I hope you are well.

Disaster: I hope you can help me.

I'm a music teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada. For decades, I have made literally hundreds of documents that I use for teaching in Pagestream. About an hour ago, I was just about to create a PDF of a large document that I made on classical guitar technique when Microsoft ran its automatic updates. Since that moment I have not been able to open any files in Pagestream.

Pagestream opens as normal and it acts like it is opening the file (the green progress bar window pops up) but shuts down when I click on the file (I always have to click on the square button to expand the file at the bottom of the screen for some reason).

I am running Windows 10 on the same machine that it has run fine on for a long time running Pagestream 5.0.5.8 Pro.

I rebooted to no avail. I then re-installed Pagestream from the www.pagestream.org but onto a thumb drive as I recall people successfully doing this (in various emails I get from support) but it does the exact same thing when I try to open a file.

I then tried opening files on a different windows 10 machine that I have Pagestream on and the same thing happens. It acts like the file is opening but on that machine, nothing happen at all (the screen from which you open a file just stays there with no sign of the document). This all makes me think it is something to do with Microsoft's update.

This is a major disaster in my professional life if I can't open any of my files.

Please help

Now Pagestream won't run at all from the copy on the my computer - which is not installed on the C Drive, by-the-way, or from the copy on the thumb drive. I made no changes to cause this.

If you have Linux installed on another drive (dual boot) in your
machine, I found that running Pagestream from Wine solves all my
problems, including printing. I too have Win10 on my winboxes. I have
not tried it from a virtulized Linux, but I will very soon. All my
installs are 64 bit.

PageStream on Linux still work, even though the years go by. Maybe
that's the solution? I'm working on Linux Debian Jessie.
Win10 works on Virtual Machine under Linux host too. I use it.

Richard and Bertold,

Thank you so much for responding!
It turned out that in Windows 10, one must delete the Pagestream5.ini file hidden in App Data.

All the best!!!

Hello Mel ^^)

Damn'd winblows !

Did you made a safe copy of all your pagestream documents ? if not do it
now on an external drive...

Then I would urge you to :

- go to update preferences of w10 and choose to not doing any update
without your prior consent (NO automatic updates anymore !)
- make a rollback updates of win10 to the day before pagestream cease to
work and reboot.
- try to open a pagestream document that was not openable before, if it
works again do all the pdf conversions you could of your hard work and
backup it on the external drive (and keep the original pagestream docs !).

- and if you can : kill win10 (after all backup of your other personal
datas) and reinstall windoh! 7 on you computer, keeping the net
disconnect all the time the install runs, and after the first boot go to
auto-updates prefs and kill it (look for updates and let me choose if it
should be installed) windoh! will cry about all sort of "it's not safe,
let me do it automatically, etc...." but let it shout.

doing so will prevent the automatic re-download of win10 on your drive
and the habitual blue screens of death (bsod) that that updates will
throw to your face for forcing you to make the win10 update again.

Best regards,
JF

Hi JF,

Wow!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this advice.
I do have everything backed up at least twice so no worries there.
I may just take your advice and revert back to Windows 7. I'm not really sure how 10 is any improvement.

Have a great weekend!!

Please stop with blaming Windows. It's more a PageStream thing together with Windows. It happens on 7, Vista, 8 and 10. Somehow the Pagestream5.ini file is written badly. That's all. Only that file is very difficult to find.

B.T.W. PageStream is working correct again at Mel.

Windows 10 is a major improvement in performance. I think the problem is with PageStream5 as I don't think it is upgraded on a regular schedule. I am amazed that Deron has gone this long with the program. I always used in my work but used the Amiga version. Just wish that Deron could be cloned and continue the great program. I have used other desktop publishing programs on Windows that work well with Windows but they just don't compare with PageStream. I prefer to keep Windows 10 up to date as I need Windows in my work and 10 has great performance.

Hi All,

Just to you people know I also use Windows 10 and Page Stream 5 is running all ok, I have had a few issues in the earlier OS's but I was able to sort them out ok.

I think if PS is not installed correctly, problems arise !
